We Bought a Non-Running 987 Porsche Boxster S CHEAP! Let's Save Another!

In this video, we buy another cheap Porsche Boxster at the Copart salvage auction. This time it's a new 2005 S model 987 generation. With low mileage and a 6-speed manual this car could be worth a ton more than we paid if we can get it sorted out.
I have to admit, I was a little nervous about buying a car sight unseen, especially from a salvage auction. But the price was too good to pass up, and I figured I could always sell it if it didn't work out.
Well, as it turns out, I ended up falling in love with this car. It was in rough shape when I first got it - it had been sitting for years and hadn't been started in just as long. But with some elbow grease and a little bit of know-how, I was able to get it running again.
The Porsche Boxster S is a truly special car, and I feel lucky to have the opportunity to own one. It's got a ton of power and handles like a dream on the open road. I've put a lot of work into this car, and I'm really proud of how it's turned out. I hope you enjoy this video and that it inspires you to take on your own car restoration project. A short tip from a Dutch Porsche driver: There is a Porsche battery charger available. You just plug it in in the sigaret ligther and the battery will charge. Then you can pop up the Hood and Reach the battery. This tip might save you a lot of problems in the future. Good luck and keep up the good work……

Marco van der Pol NO NO NO NO !!!!! ....... I did that in my 2 week quest to get my frunk open to charge the battery. It WON'T work with a totally dead battery because it requires 6 volts remaining in the car battery to connect. I BOUGHT ONE thinking spending all of that Porsche money was the magic solution. $200 down the toilet. The brand named "Battery Tender" takes 3 volts remaining in the battery to work. Instead, plug a jump box into the OBD2 plug and it will work immediately. (The Porsche branded battery maintainer works great in it's intended function of maintaining a sitting car. That is what it is for.)

Trick for this issue with a proper jumper box. Step 1. Stick a screwdriver into the cigarrent lighter, clamp the postive to it. Step 2. Negative jumper cable onto the door strike. This will energise the 12 volt system and the electronic hatches will work . FYI try to isolate the screwdriver with electric tape so the sides dont contact and spark the wall of the socket. A long Phillips would be ideal.

Hey guys! Love the content! Just a heads up, next time you have one of these Porches with a dead battery, one of you push down on the hood while the other yanks the cable, see if that’s easier. Pushing down on the hood should relieve the force on the latch making it pop easier. Hope this helps!

earlier cars had cables, later ones are electric switches. there is an emergency cable under front bumper to pull to release the hood, though tricky to locate. or provide 12v supply to fuse panel and the switches work, then access battery to charge.

Guys, I know a trick to get to that cable. All you need is a Phillips screw driver. And you get to it from the inside of the car, driver's side. On the 98-2000 Boxsters, remove the fuse panel cover on lower left of foot well driver's side. There is a frame around the fuse box being held on by if I remember correctly 6 Phillips screws, remove the screws and fuse panel frame. On the top right hand corner you can see the cable with the black sleeve, grab it and pull on it, "click" you will hear front hatch open. Hope this helps!😉

RE. the battery problem, most smart charger type battery boost units have a minimum voltage in the car battery for them to connect. the green BatteryTender is I think is 3 volts required and the fancy expensive Porsche one is 6 volts needed on the battery to work. If the car battery is dead-dead, they won't work. These are maintainers not chargers or jumpers. Probably using a large boost box would work. A good option is just have a fully charged spare battery borrowed from another car to hook up to the fuse box terminal. The thing that worked best for me was to have a portable jump box with a cord with a OBD2 plug on the end. Plug it into the OBD2 terminal and it will work. I diddled for two weeks using every trick on the internet until I did that and it took 30 seconds to have to have the front trunk open. And remember, unless this is your daily driver, keep a smart charger on this car. It seems to have more than its share of vampire electrical devices running when it is just sitting and you only have maybe 2 weeks before your battery goes dead when it is sitting sometimes.

I love so much that y'all do this. So dang often in places like Porsche groups on Facebook you'll see a ton of people who have no mechanical knowledge and don't wanna learn. Which is fine and understandable, but because of it, so many of these cars end up on the chopping block. Hell, even mechanics often treat them as if they run on magic smoke. I couldn't afford my 98 Boxster if I didn't do most of my own maintenance. It's got some quirks, but overall, it's STILL just a car. 11 years and she's still my baby at 128k miles. And, in some ways, she's REMARKABLY easier to work on than a lot of other cars I've had.

I've never had any luck powering the car through the fuse panel. I bought a NOCO battery tender with their adapter for the cigarette lighter plug and it works great. A must-have for any 987 owner. And that ticking doesn't sound like lifters; I would absolutely get a scope in those cylinders.

Wife had an 03...She loved it, alway ran and was very trouble free. We had a great shop and alway followed their advice. We did the ims at a clutch replacement. In the end we moved to Montana and she moved to an SUV.

Make sure you check all your convertible top drains to make sure they are clear. A clogged drain can lead to the ECU getting wet

You may be able to save that module with contact cleaner. Spray the whole board and all your contacts with contact cleaner and and scrub it with a brush. Then dry it out well. Let it bake out in that Arizona sun. What's the most it can cost you? A can of contact cleaner? I like using the Deoxit. It's a little pricey but the stuff works wonders.

Check the "rear control module" under the driver's seat. Common issue if the roof drains are clogged, water into the cabin... Straight onto that RCM... Corrosion ensues. Oh, electronic dipstick too. Ignition on wait till the tones stop, pull the btm left stalk once.

When you have a completely flat battery you have to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and put the jump leads/booster pack onto that disconnected cable or jump point otherwise all that happens is that the power from the jump leads/booster pack gets sucked up by the battery. That can result in enough voltage drop to make the vehicle electronics not work properly.

The ticking sound is normal if the engine is cold, especially winter. Putting in 5W40 would make it better if that annoys you. Make sure to start driving right away and not let the car idle to warm-up (it is in the manual), because it will cause bore scoring. The weird tapping sound could simply be cold engine, but check the cylinders with a borescope just to be safe.

Guys since you are getting into porsche you need to know how the frunk works. When you have a dead battery first you power up the fuse box(like you already know) Then you have to use the trunk button on the "key fob" not the door sill. Hope this helps you in the future. Looks like you're batting 100%.

The ECU sits under the passenger seat (in my UK RHD) if it gets flooded it messes up all the rear electronics. There’s an issue with the drain, which runs down the rear wheel arch and if it gets blocked the water runs into the car.

I agree with the comment made by Ken Bode. Check the drain holes. Several up front, two in the back. You can do a search on KZbin using "Boxster drain holes" and you will find a lot of content. No doubt one or more of the drain holes is/was blocked which flooded the floor of the car and craped out the Rear Control Module which sits under the driver's seat.

Cycling the key off/on to start is normal if you had it in position 2 already. You should take the carpets out if the drains around the battery or under the top clamshell are clogged because there is probably water still under the carpet from recent storms - foam under the carpets is a super sponge - carpets will be dry though. You should check the heater core cover butyl seal is well sealed. If not, take the carpets out. Taking the carpets out will also confirm where the water got into the car as you will see the dirt on the metal. Buy the screens that go over the clamshell drains to keep large objects from clogging the drains. Clamshell mechanism seems broken. The 12V outlet in the center console under your elbow (not the passenger footwell one) should be always active and is a way to charge the battery if it is not completely dead. If the frunk light is not working, drown the latch mechanism in WD-40. The frunk switch may be dead but hard to say since the key battery is probably dead too. You should check if you can get to the fuel filler since that door is electronic too. S models are notorious for bore scoring - ugh.

Enjoy your Boxster videos but there is a way to bypass a flat battery without all the business of getting wheels off! Having opened the driver door with the key , open the fuse cover, pull out the big red plug ! Then connect a negative jump lead earth from a spare battery to the steel door lock catch on the body of the car. Then connect a positive lead from the spare battery to the red plug in the fuse box which has copper connectors on it ! This should then allow you to open up the boot and the bonnet with the sill lever switches !! Also allows you to disconnect the battery for winter storage when car not in use - avoids the alarm siren sounding too !

If you pull out fuse A2 and send 12v down both sides of the fuse connector, it will give you some power to open the latch. Be sure to look at the fuse diagram for the specific year of boxster/cayman for fuses labeled "Central Locking Left" or "CU CL/Alarm". The alarm system will disarm any problems with the frunk/trunk having issues unlocking.

I bought an '05 987 2 years ago, similar problem wit the battery. I tried too a battery charger to the red terminal and ground-no luck. What I did was to use a +12VDC 'black brick' AC adapter. Soldered alligator clips to the ends, connected it, and it worked the first time. I had a battery drain problem, and used it again a few times before installing a new battery.

Guys I've run into that problem a lot as a tow truck driver The buttons on the car don't do anything when you hook power to that fuse box little deal nothing works in the car but if you have the key fob and you hit the trunk open button on it 9 times out of 10 it will work try it out and thank me later 👍

Hey guys, a tip from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean: the first time you try to start a car wich previously had a dead bathery, turn ignition WITHOUT starting the engine: just wait a few seconds, (30-60sec) the time to electronics 'learn' and stabilize, and TURN THE KEY OFF. Wait some seconds, turn ignition on again and then start the engine. You will be surprised with results. I own a 987 and also had a 986 for 10 years. That tapping noise sounds like it could possibly be bore scoring, I would recommend getting a borescope carried out where they just check the cylinder sleeves for the scoring to be on the safe side. It’s an issue that 05 987’s can get occasionally

On my 986 to release either the front or rear trunks you need to pull the drivers door handle at the same time you pull the release, a security feature to stop someone opening them if you leave the car parked with the top down. Good luck with it.

Keep up the great content you guys, you can rig up power with the 12v plug in lighter socket and connect to a battery it will give you enough power to open the bonnet or hood, I have done it myself, hope it helps you guys

This right here... As long as the lighter is powered when the car is off (which it is on the 987), you can use it as a charging port. I've got an '06 Boxster S and charge it through the lighter with my CTEK with no issues. As long as the battery will take a minimal charge, you can pop the hood.

@@darindelegal1102 Yes, "As long as the battery will take a minimal charge". That's what people don't understand. I have the Porsche maintainer which I think is the same as the CTEK. But neither will work if the car battery is completely dead. That is how they are designed. I think the voltage limit is for battery protection for some reason. Those small jump boxes might work because some of them have a special button to push if the battery is completely drained. I don't know if Harbor Freight trickle chargers have the voltage limits or not. Maybe in this case the cheap product without the bells and whistles may be better than a fancy one.

2005 had both older and newer IMS. You have to google for the engine number, but it's not all that simple either. Your oil is full. You should not fill more than that (check the manual) I have a lowered 2005 Boxster S with short shift and sport exhaust. Such a blast to drive!

Hey so to make it easier to pop the hood if you have another person have him push the hood down as you pull the cable lot easier and if you have a jack find the positive cable on the starter and hook up a bump box to that to get power

Keep them BOTH...channels... Years ago looking through car magazines there were advertisements for battery chargers that you plugged into the cigarette lighters .... Provided Porsche still put them in ...could be easier than finding and pulling that cable... push down on the hood while Christian is pulling on that cable...

You probably know now that all the dirt and leaves run down the front window and clog the drains above the motor. The water then floods the passenger compartment, shorting-out the expensive module. You just have to vacuum it out and make sure they are draining. They come out just in front of the back wheels.

Put the battery onto the red post in the fuse box and earth out the negative to ground, pull the front hood release.

If you don't drain the bad gas it's going to run rough and possibly clog your fuel filter and gum up your lines and injectors. If you siphon it first and add fresh premium gas it should help not put so much wear on the engine.

Maybe I missed something but ehh.....I understand the worry about the oil needing to at minimum level at least before trying to start it up but what about the gas ?? That has been sitting there for ages and as far as I know....over time it will go bad, forming sludge in the bottom of the tank. You do not want to suck that up right into an engine that has not been running for a while I guess ? So...really curious if you did take any precautions for that and if so.....what ? Cheers !!

The click noise in the engine may be coming from hydrolic pushers, there is this issue with 993, you have to run it regularly or let it heat. And by the way, wait a little bit more with the warning lights or before start it up, don't rush the key like this it hurts me 😂😂

Boy, boys! Third time. If the battery is dead you can apply power to port or the access switch. You need to wait a bit as this charges the battery which will then allow you to open the hatch. The reason I now this is because I was stupid enough to drain my battery down, twice! Ugh. After the second time I made a pigtail out of a plug that goes to the power port or cigarette lighter and hooked it up to a 1 amp trickle charger. A few minute and open she goes......remember current flows positive to negative so anywhere there is a hot always will work, if you have a hot when key on situation you do the same thing with the key on. It will charge the battery and open what you need

Regarding the front trunk release. if you connect a 12v supply to the centre cigarette lighter holder. you can use the lever to pop the front trunk. done this many times myself.

I forget the company but there is one in I believe Florida that refurbishes the bad ECU modules. Check the drains on all 986, 996, 987, 997... convertibles. This is a very common issue. Of the top of my head, for 986/996 I think it's a couple grand to replace. I'm not sure on a 987. The 2007 (possibly 2006) have an internal IMSB that is not serviceable without dismantling the engine. The 986/996 is easily replaceable.

Don't you have a Durametric code reader? If not, you should get one as you'll want to know the error codes on any Porsche you buy.

The tapping could be nothing due to it sitting, but I had a similar sound in my 996 and it was the water pump going out. You may want to check that (I just pulled off the belt and could tell when I rotated it) to be safe if you haven’t done that already.

My wife’s ‘10 had blocked roof drains and flooded under the passenger seat after we had a few days of heavy rain killing the controller for auxiliary items ie rear spoiler, alarm, lights etc. She mentioned hearing sloshing noises which I ignored (duh).

quick question, why check oil level instead of just drain and refill fresh, could be crappy oil, could save damage on startup?
