Usually, people that make videos of the Baofeng UV-5R will spread a lot of hate about the radio simply because it has made the radio hobby available to the masses verses for only the wealthy. The Yeasu, Icom, Kenwood, bunch hate this transceiver because it allows commoners into their sterile hobby. They are angry because the $30 Baofeng does far more than their $300 Icom, or $400 Kenwood.

Top quality presentation, thank you! I learned more from this video than from the previous 20 videos I watched about uv-5r previously. I'm thinking of buying a cheap ham radio, what do you think TYT th-uv88 or BF uv-5r? I like the fact these have FM radio, and the TYT can save 24 FM channels and it seems uv-5r has no feature for this. Do you know anything about that TYT? I went throuhg all youtube and nobody showed how the FM radio works properly, and I might not be the only guy getting interested in ham radios that would like to know more about that. Also, sound quality, how do they compare on these entry level devices? (if there is any difference at all) Thanks again!

Its my understanding that if the up/ down arrow is on the top, that is the only freq i will transmit on, but i will still hear the bottom channel… just not transmit on it? Also if i switch to the lower channel, do i transmit there and hear the upper? Im so new to this…. Very confusing at times

@BDTube20062 жыл бұрын
Both radios are HAM radios...you will need an amateur radio license to legally transmit (talk) on both radios; however, to talk to the BF888, you'll simply need to program the UV-5R to match the frequency on the BF888 (to listen); to communicate between the two, you will also need to adjust the TONE to match as well.

Quick question: I have two (2) Baofeng UV-5Rs. I have them set and programed identically the same in the menu. I also have them on the same frequency. When I transmit from Baofeng radio # 1 to Baofeng radio # 2 it works fine however when I try to transmit from Baofeng radio # 2 to Baofeng radio # 1, the Baofeng radio # 1 will not pick up the transmission from the other Baofeng radio #2. SO I cannot hear any signal/transmission from Baofeng radio # 1. Do you think there is something wrong with Baofeng radio # 1?

Hey! Thank you! But I have a question. I don't have any set memory channels..we bought these for snowboarding and other outdoor activities. Do I need to find a repeater first?
@dwaynerobertson3833 жыл бұрын
If you do not have a HAM license you are not allowed to use repeaters anyway (unless it is a dire emergency). I am pretty sure it's illegal, unless you have a license and an identifying call sign, to use repeaters. I think you guys will need to use what is called Simplex. For example, if you all key in the same frequency (just as an example 146.150), you could all transmit and receive on that channel. You better make sure you are not interfering with a police or fire channel, or HAM's...or anyone else on whatever channel you guys key in. Find a channel nobody is using, ask if the channel is in use, wait a minute or so and if no response start talking. Hope this helps out.
@Bearinthewoods883 жыл бұрын
@@dwaynerobertson383 (Assuming OP lives in the USA) Even in Simplex, its illegal to transmit on these devices without a Ham/Amateur Radio license. There isn’t a legal way to transmit using these radios without a Ham license, and they are capable of transmitting in modes illegal even for Hams using this device (FRS, GMRS, emergency service frequencies, etc.). If you decide to use your radio to transmit, just be aware, you are breaking federal laws set up by the FCC. I’m not telling anyone WHAT to do, just letting you know the laws. Chances are, you wouldn’t get caught, but if you are on a Ham frequency and causing problems for Hams, they can locate you pretty quickly if they want (as could the FCC). Radio is NOT anonymous communication. Also notice I specified transmit; anyone can listen, its only a a potential $10,000 fine when you transmit. The reason this device is illegal on FRS (Family Radio System, which is just your regular walkie-talkies/2-way radios you can get from Walmart) and GMRS (like FRS but requires a licensing fee from the FCC and is stronger; a lot of businesses use these) is because the device is at too high of a power level set by the FCC, and is programmable from the keypad, and a few other things like that. Once again, not telling OP what to do, just letting you know what the deal is. I’d suggest though, getting a waterproof radio for snowboarding, though.
@dwaynerobertson3833 жыл бұрын
@@Bearinthewoods88 cool. I'm new to all of this HAM/two-way radio stuff. I listen in but otherwise I haven't used any of my radios really, certainly not transmitting yet. I know how they work and how to work them. I have about a dozen local repeaters and weather channels programmed and saved, and my backpack/EDC/BOB and what not all have instructions how to program all the info required (freq' step, offset, R&T ctcss, etc), with the radios, and spare batteries for all 4 radios. I bought these radios primarily for emergency situations, and ended up with two pair instead of one. Well, I can use two of them to set up my own repeater system! I am seriously confused on the laws because most of the videos I watch are American and I am in Canada. From what I understand, using Simplex isn't a big deal here, but you better be sure you are using a channel that is not reserved for anyone or anything else. I think I am free to use available GMRS channels here, but that is here in Canada and to my understanding...so far. Using one public walkie-talkie channel for a few hours on a weekend shouldn't be a big deal, especially in backwoods middle of nowhere. I am not encouraging anyone to break any laws. I wish I knew more about them myself! All good advice though, Bear. Especially the waterproof radios for snowboarding!!
@Bearinthewoods883 жыл бұрын
@@dwaynerobertson383 Not sure about any of the Canadian laws, but I would suggest looking into getting your license anyway. You learn a lot about the laws and such when studying for the test, then afterwards you can take the test and get certified and have a lot more options for your radio!

What frequency can we use? How come not a single video explains this. A 12 year old can figure how to hand jam frequency's in the radio, the question is what ones can we use between two ham radios that are free and not in use?
@BDTube20062 жыл бұрын
Well, the reason most dont is because an amateur license is required to legally talk on a HAM radio. It's also against the rules to use a HAM radio to transmit (speak) on FRS/GMRS radios (i.e. typical handheld walkie that you can get from your local store). You can use the HAM radio to access these channels, but it's for "receiving only" (listening).
