Robbie has gone to the big sky, this is probably my favorite song of his. His solo work is so underappreciated, his solo albums are absolute masterpieces.

Oh I totally appreciate Robbie's solo albums, I have virtually all of them. The Native American music mixed with rock n roll in the mid 1990s he made was incredible. His final studio album Sinematic in 2019 was outstanding! One of my favorites of his. He was underappreciated, but not by true music lovers like us !

Please don’t hate me but Robbie gave me this CD and signed it. In 87 or 88. He was a customer of my father. Stupid me at the time didn’t know his important place in Rock History or his connection with The Band or Bob Dylan. He was just “some” musician standing in my father’s store taking the time to be nice to the owner’s son, with kindness and humility. I cherish this CD. And the artist.

Robbie was a giant of music in Canada, and across the world. I love how he forged a new sonic and songwriting path after his time with the band - and in my view improved as a complete artist, including adding his unique vocals for the first time. He did get lots of help on this song. The BoDeans lead the chorus here and their vocals blend well with Robbie's (I believe that is them in the video). Daniel Lanois as producer works absolute magic with the sonic landscape created here. Lastly, the song's theme. I see in the comments the view that it's a narrative related to his native heritage - and the video certainly suggests that. But if you read the lyrics, I don' think there's any doubt this is about the nuclear anxiety prevalent in the 1980s. "When you hear the big bang", "Darkness at high noon", "Save this place, from the weapons race, when it's laid to waste", "Kiss tomorrow goodbye". The fact that he addresses this heavy topic, yet the lyrics seem universal and the music is so buoyant, joyous, uplifting and full of emotion says a lot about how his songwriting reached a new level with this song and album. A genuine masterpiece. Sends my heart soaring every time I hear it. RIP Robbie.

Soldier of fortune, he's a man of war Just can't remember what he's fighting for Start a revolution right before your eyes When you hear the big bang don't you be surprised Showdown at big sky Darkness at high noon Showdown at big sky That day may be soon People, people, can you hear the sound From every village and every town? Let the bells ring out, hear the bells ring in Let the bells ring out, keep them ringing, ringing Can't predict the future, can't forget the past Feels like any moment could be the last All you believers standing inside this room Can't you see it coming shooting out across the moon? (Save this place) In the valley of tears by the river of time (From weapons race) In the Book Of David in the Holy Bible (When it's laid to waste) It will be written by the children of Eden (I said save this place) And the Holy Ghost Showdown at big sky Darkness at high noon Showdown at big sky That day may be soon People, people, can you hear the sound From every village and every town? Let the bells ring out, hear the bells ring in Let the bells ring out, keep them ringing, ringing (Save this place) In the valley of tears by the river of time (From weapons race) In the Book Of David in the Holy Bible (When it's laid to waste) It will be written by the children of Eden (I said save this place) And the Holy Ghost, and the Holy Ghost Showdown at big sky Darkness at high noon Kiss tomorrow goodbye That day could be soon Give us strength, give us wisdom And give us the morals Let the bells ring out, hear the bells ring in Let the bells ring out, keep them ringing, ringing Let the bells ring out, hear the bells ring in Let the bells ring out, keep them ringing, ringing Let the bells ring out, hear the bells ring in Let the bells ring out, keep them ringing, ringing Writer(s): Robbie Robertson

This song really moves. I have to be very careful when driving with this song playing. I usually end up going at least 50 over the limit.

I just can't express how this song makes me feel when I hear it. It stirs me profoundly and I just want to cry. The Native American warriors and even the white horse - they just kill me and I don't know why....Robbie Robertson - thank you so much for a song that touches my soul.

I completely get what you mean. Robbie Robertson really tapped into the Native spirit with this song. The whole album really, but in this song it's like he wrote the Native equivalent of the Book of Revelation. Somehow he used his musical genius to meld that revelation with the rock music style which is no mean feat. This album has stood the test of time for that very reason. Anyone who listens to it can't deny the power of its sound. I wish I had an ounce of the courage that Native Americans have. I'm of Puerto Rican descent so I know I have some Native blood in me, but it's not the same thing exactly. The mainland struggle has been where the battle has been, and Robbie Robertson captures it with elegiac defiance in this song.
