Lyrics:
Windin' your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you'll drink the night away
And forget about everything
This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul
And it's taking you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything
You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin', you're tryin' now
Another year and then you'll be happy
Just one more year and then you'll be happy
But you're cryin', you're cryin' now
Way down the street there's a light in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen and you talk about anything
He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down, in some quiet little town
And forget about everything
[Chorus]
But you know he'll always keep movin'
You know he's never gonna stop movin'
'Cause he's rollin', he's the rollin' stone
And when you wake up, it's a new mornin'
The sun is shinin', it's a new mornin'
You're goin', you're goin' home

Baker Street just hits hard. That sax just emphasizes the lyrics. You get two of them and the guitar solo hits....which it just fucking is awesome....then more sax.

Yesterday I visited London and caught the tube from Baker St. As I descended the escalator I was hummimg the tune silently inside my mind and a man behind me started whistling the sax part. Really good whistling too. Thank you mr whistler...you made my day. I'd just been for a hospital appointment and your spontaneity was so cool and made me smile. Keep whistling and spreading those happy Baker St vibes.

It just doesn't get any better, and think about the fact that Gerry grew up in Scotland. Somehow, he tapped into the American vibe of what was going on at that time and adapted it and created magic out of it all. Rafferty absolutely nailed it. Icon of 70s music writ large. And no, PLEASE do not post idiotic geriatric missives about how "that was real music, no this or that, blah blah." That's idiotic and irrelevant. There is plenty of good music out there now, but the point is that this was the 70s, and Raffrerty helped define the era. I was there.

@2112GTR
@2112GTR 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I don't agree. The saxophone lines are NOT a solo, it's a melody line repeated throughout the song, and Ravenscroft never told the truth about it. The demo exists where Gerry Rafferty plays the melody line (not a solo, it's a riff, or motif) on guitar. It's Gerry's melody, not Ravenscroft's, and it's a great song, saxophone or not! Everyone goes on, and on about the sax playing, and it's good but not outstanding and he didn't come up with it off the cuff, it wasn't improvised. He even lied about not getting paid for it, but if he was in the musicians union, that's what they are there for, to make sure you DO get paid!!! A load of bullshit!! Why does nobody ever talk about the brilliant guitar work on it? Hugh Burns plays one of the best solos probably EVER on a song that was that big of a hit, and gets NO credit!!!! 🤔😬
@leonmcnair4615
@leonmcnair4615 3 ай бұрын
@@2112GTR It's just one of those things where it gets overshadowed unintentionally. I mean, I would disagree that the guitar solo, although great in its own right, would be considered one of the best in song-history. In my opinion, it would have to go through the rounds with a few timeless pieces before it then contends against many of Dire Straits songs - riffs, licks, solos, the lot. But I say that as someone who considers Dire Straits both underrated and overshadowed, while they being my all-time favourite artist. There is a subjectivity to it.

Now I'm a drummer who has been playing for 58 years. I worked at Chess Records in Chicago and seen/experienced some wild sh*t my time there. In the end, it's all good! Some of the remarks I've read here astound me. I don't think some of your musical experiences at the most have to deal with the volumn knob on your stereo. Gerry Rafferty for those of you not knowing how talented the man was. He played guitar AND piano. He wrote the songs, sang them and directed/produced each song. Not an easy feat. Give the man the accolades he deserves, don't tear him down. Please. Bless you brother.

I was young, single, and living in Los Angeles when this song came out. Some of my friends never did "give up the booze and the one-night stands" and they never made it out of L.A. alive. @@orourkedamusic I assumed it was about L.A. until I saw the double-decker buses. I remember hearing this song at the community pool when I was a kid. I took up saxophone, partially because of this and other songs of the time, but also, my dad still had his from back in the day, so that saved some money. He got to play with one or two somewhat known bands, and his sister sang in D.C. with Mama Cass (sp?) at some point. He went on to become a shrink, and my aunt became a nurse. Great song. Somewhat good memories. Teenage angst being what it is. :)

@@45CaliberCure London would make sense given his background. Apparently, he was in a band with the comedian Billy Connolly and this song is, at least in part, about both Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty's subsequent move to London and elements of his career in the music business in the following period. His immense talent and his songs are still as popular today as they were then. In an interview with Mark Knoefler, he said they would go to the pub often after the pub closed Gerry aways kept drinking when he went home or somewhere else. He knew then that Gerry was slowly sinking into addiction. His father also died an alcoholic, so it seems to have been a genetic trait. This song and right down the line are classics.

This song, in particular, brings me back to my childhood in the 70s more than any other song. When I hear it, I literally see my surroundings through a young child's eyes, from pushing a coin into a phone box calling home, to riding on the top deck of the bus (49A) where people were smoking, to joining the Boys Brigade (26th Brighton), or playing in the 67 Centre (Moulsecoomb)... Proud to have grown up where I did in the 70s, even if we had very little financially, we had mates, we had fresh air... Crazy looking back on your life when you had absolutely no clue as to where you would end up:) For me, coming from a poor area, I ended up becoming an English teacher - actually worked in a school in Baker Street, then lived and worked in Japan 18 years before moving to Italy.💫 Life is all about moving forwards, but it's important to look back and remember your beginnings.

This always brings back memories of me aged 7. My Dad (now 80) used to be a carpenter and joiner. He was the driver for his mates so he'd be out of the house by 5 am collecting them. My Mum (RIP) would wake up with him to make him breakfast. I would sneak out of my bedroom and climb into their bed. I always loved listening to Terry Wogan on my Mums little red plastic radio propped on her dressing table. I would doze with songs like this and Bryan Ferry, Bee Gees playing in the background. I always remember this as being summertime or autumn for some reason . I loved watching the shadow of leaves from the tree outside our house dance against the curtains as the morning got lighter. My mum would then call up the stairs to wake me and my sister up for school. This song always reminds me of this! Love you always Mum xxx

I'd be honored if some Gerry Rafferty fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performance of BAKER STREET on my YT in tribute to this genius late 70s masterpiece. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and stay safe in the '020s.
