Out of curiosity, why did you teach Thunderbolt to Mewtwo right after Lt. Surge? If you had waited until after Rock Tunnel you could have taught it Bubble Beam to make the Hiker a lot easier

Actually I was thinking with all the talk of saving trips to the pokecenter if he used TM's, PP ups and such at the right time to restore/replace spent power points he could save some time that way. Pretty sure this generation gives you full PP when you learn a new move.

Rival fival takes a lot of time if you walk straight out from the teleporter because the rival will slowly walk all the way around you. If you enter his line of sight one tile higher, he will immediately walk to the right and clear the room, allowing you to walk again. Basically, the difference is that you walk 2 more tiles while the rival walks 4 less tiles... And the rival walks at half your speed, so in essence you can walk 6 tiles more with this small optimization. The same kind of optimization can be done when getting the pokedex by talking to oak from the side or behind (this is more of a pokemon yellow thing to get pikachu out of the rival's way.)

This reminds me of hbomberguy's video on speedrunning, which everyone should check out if they haven't already: a part near the end tracks how the record holder (at the time) for Ocarina of Time got really quiet as the record-setting run went on due to trying to focus and being worried about screwing things up. Jrose talking about the tongue-chewing reminded me of that, since worrying about pulling it off is a common theme unless your name happens to be Keizaron. :D

Just a note: speedruns DO battle the bug catcher on Rt3 and NOT the Lass. Battling the Lass takes more time because you have to walk all the way back to Pewter to reset her position to dodge the bug catcher.

If I remember from all those years ago... repel only protects you against weak Pokemon. Meaning any above a certain level or evolution are still able to get you, albeit with a smaller chance. That's why you encountered a high level Tenacruel.

GREAT RUN! Love seeing that even with Mew2 it still isn't a walk in the park, that RNG Gen1 really keeps it interesting. Would love to see a Snorlax run! It has decent base stats and enough HP to stack Xspeed without difficulty. Also it doesn't evolve and has a very short cry so that's just minutes off most runs straight off the top!

Can you beat every gym/the elite 4 in pokemon red/blue by only using pokemon the same level they were caught? Rules: -You cannot enter a gym/the elite 4 with pokemon that have leveled up (you can use levelled up pokemon on route though). -If you don't level up your starter before reaching a gym, you can still use that. -You can level up your pokemon in the gym (by battle, not by rare candy), but if you do you can't use the same pokemon in other gyms afterwards.

In my opinion, a "challenge speedrun" like this should include finding and defeating Mewtwo after defeating the Elite 4 and Rival. Mewtwo is the ultimate battle found in this game, so the game doesn't feel "complete" until I'm strong enough to kill him.

You don't neeeeeed a gameshark to do these kinds of runs. If you combine a ton of the glitches in gen 1 you can kind of circumnavigate the entire map without triggering any events or resetting any events that you do trigger, pick up a pokemon using the missingo glitch and place yourself back in pallet town, with the glitch disabled. Practically starting a new game with whatever starter you want, though with a few things completed between the start and brock, then you can start the clock after you get back to pallet town
