Right? I get that it takes "time and staff" to keep everything up-to-date, but trust me. There's people looking for work. Especially there's people looking for work in video game stores thanks to youtube channels like this one. If stores are finding it hard to keep up with pricing tasks they should take on more employment help. That way no one falls behind.
@RwnEsper3 күн бұрын
As far as not pricing things: Just be transparent. If you have a case full of un-priced games, and price them at time of sale, just put a damn sign on the case that says so! "Due to market volatility blah blah blah, we use Price Charting."
@lordcheesus10133 күн бұрын
I get that the market volatility can be a big pain. But as a professional store, who ever suffers from that problem should just bring in more employees for the job. I'm sure most stores would be able to find someone willing even to specifically price games and keep track of the markets during their shifts if they had to.

@hoktang1Күн бұрын
@@lordcheesus1013you do understand that some of these store are just a mom and pop store. There maybe no extra money for an extra employee right. You just have to make do with what you can afford. Also a lot of people would go to store and shop around while simultaneously price check Amazon to see if it is cheaper. So it’s a waste of time for the owner to label it and not make the sale. Simple solution is just tell them what Amazon has it for. Then ask for a price match. Simple. Instead thinking everyone is trying to scam you. Or maybe that is what the store owner is trying to match the Amazon prices

@@hoktang1 That's a pretty good idea. If I were the owner, I would have also offered discounts if they bought multiple specific items too on top of price matching. Slightly unrelated, but I used to work for a popular small biz store that was constantly rotating stock, and repricing everything (hundreds of product listings every few weeks) when new stuff came...no barcodes as we produced literally everything in-house from start to finish, and so we were making custom labels that we had to cut and laminate. It got to be such a huge pain for everyone in the store because; that my boss one day asked me to figure out a portable barcode system he was willing to invest in, so anyone could just scan it whenever a customer asked for the price, with the only thing changing being the computer program that automatically adjusted the price in real time according to current market price, that could adjust for tax increases, inflation...etc, and also automatically adjusted whenever there was a sale like during Black Friday. Saved a lot of money on man-hours and overtime from having to reprice everything, as well as a lot of headache for both employees and the customers. In the end he paid someone else to do it that had more specialty in programming as it would have taken time away from my own work station. He eventually wanted to work towards having a dedicated scanner in the area so customers can just take the product up to it and scan it themselves to find out the price, similar to how some supermarkets or pharmacies have. This was many years ago, so there's probably companies that offer off-the-shelf solutions like this available catered towards small-medium sized businesses by now.

Theres three things that are just a deal breaker for me at games stores: -No cleanliness of either their store or the products they sell. I've seen stores be perfectly clean, but the games are never cleaned or refurbished before selling. -Displaying personal collection pieces that aren't for sale at a store. This really annoys me. If it's not for sale, dont put it in your store. Promo items and standees are one thing, but when you have a lot of desirable games on display and it's not for sale, it's just an ego move. Especially when the games that aren't for sale are way better than anything that is for sale. -No pricing is horrendous. It not only wastes everyones time, but also doesn't give much confidence in the buyer if they know that every single game will have the highest, up to date price. We come to stores to look for deals, not stand awkwardly at the counter waiting for a price to be found.

@hoktang1 as much as a business wants to they can't be open 24/7 it makes sense to have times where the shop is closed if you really need time make it a whole day as long as the costumers know it's fine you also don't need to keep up with the market typically it's better to sell a small mark up of market price at the time of obtaining product speaking of course as someone who did work at a card shop pricing cards what I learned is unless it's brand new or has a really good reason for it most cards and games drop in market price over time not increase so you're most likely losing on prophet if you constantly update the prices on your product rather than doing it maybe once a month or so

Back in the day people couldn't WAIT to get rid of retro stuff because everyone's always obsessed with the latest and greatest in gaming tech. These days though, retro gaming channels like this one are proof positive that collecting is real and even kinda cool despite what the preppy people try to tell you. Worse, they're starting to wise up on how much this stuff is worth to us so now naturally prices sky rocket as a result. I'm grateful for channels like this because I love watching others hunt games and collect like I do for certain things but stores are getting wiser now because of it. It just sucks when the stores go overboard with prices because of it, especially with IP's like Pokemon.

well if you have a good store owner, obviously depending on what they paid for a particular game, they should be able to make the same amount of money as an ebay sale, only because ebay fees are around 15%(they might have changed). So a game priced at 100 in store or on ebay, the owner gets say $85 of the sale on ebay, or could realistically give that discount in store get the same $85 and not have to worry about shipping. I think the most successful stores I've seen in person and online are more focused on inventory turn over and cash flow, than they are pure profit. Obviously they have to make profit or they won't be in business very long, but its better to flip 10k in inventory for 13k quickly, than it is to maybe sit on that same 10k and turn it in to 20k over 2 years(Obviously massive caveats to this)

In some places it is even illegal to not have prices displayed, because it could lead to discrimination as they could give different prices to customers depending on their looks (if they think they can get out more from a casual looking one rather than a savvy one). You are right when saying repricing them constantly would demand too much work, but there is a method I've seen in some locals where it not only keeps a fair ground for all customers but also protects the cases from the sticker's glue. This is, placing one or two pages with the names in alphabetical order and their respective prices inside a plastic sleeve taped to the sides of the display. This way two persons could look at the display and take the printed sheet out to look for the prices. This way when the time comes to do some adjustments they are only 2-4 black & white prints from update. Just take out the old pages from their plastic protection and add the new ones and to the sleeve they go.

I agree on both that they need more things priced, without needing to asking staff all the time, but also having the time and staff to always be updating those prices + buying new price stickers does also add up. One possible "easy" solution would be to label the glass shelved items at a price range and then just shift items around as they adjust in price. Then customers have a ballpark idea of what on the shelf is worth and also won't require new stickers all the time. I've mentioned this on Retro Rick's videos before, but someone needs to come up with a software for these stores to list their own inventory prices vs price charting &/or eBay prices. Then from there they could maybe find big price changes between what they have vs the other markets. I wouldn't bother price changing pennies in adjustments, but when it turns to a few dollars, they should consider a price change.

I just started watching this video and before i even watch it, im pretty sure you guys are gonna mention how they don't price many of their games. I really dislike stores that do that. Also, great coverage of vegas the stores guys! 😊 EDIT: So after finishing the video, I figured the price thing was gonna be that one gripe. Their other store does this as well. And man, that Dragon Slayer with no UPC should have been a bigger discount! That game is super rare though so still a good find 😀 great content you guys. Been subbed since we met at gane on but i am bad about leaving comments. Your Retro City Games videos were great.

Best way to stop this practice is have a ton of people go 1 at a time grab a ton of games ask them what the prices are and once they check each prices then be like sorry that’s too much and leave then wait a bit then send the next person to do the same thing over and over till they learn they should be prices on the games or put a sign saying they go by price chart

It's a riot seeing you guys mention Gear Works. I snagged a copy of it from the '2 for $5.00' Game Boy bin at the local retro game store about 3 years ago. I had never heard of it and it looked like a real oddity so I figured, what the heck. Square Deal was another one that threw me for a loop.

@@JRPGLife LA Machine Guns double pack is fantastic as well. Definitely add it to your collection at some point. The Wii light gun games are a joy to play together.

I have "MAJIN & THE FORSAKEN KINGDOM" for the PS3 & XBOX-360. The game feels like a predecessor to "THE LAST GUARDIAN". At 5:35 I noticed a box for the home version of "TAC/SCAN". I always had the highest score on that game in the arcades no matter where I played it. My highest score (so far) is 438,200. As for the 3DO, I had to have one just to play all the import games from Kenji Eno (console is region free by design). It's a pain to remove price stickers, it's good they don't use them. Nice store & good video.

Vegas local here and I can vouch that the Wii Play Games on Rainbow and Sahara (West Location) Does indeed price a good majority of their items. I do not condone not pricing items like this, but will say the West location is better about this.

No prices def a bummer. I usually ask prices right away if i notice that. Depending on their qst iffer i can usally gauge whether or not they will give a deal or are just giving first price they see on ebay

i’ll be honest, i price EVERYTHING, however i don’t have a LOT of inventory, i do my best to offer what i can.

Yeah, it sucks that stores are doing. But it only because of resale channels like pheonix resale going out and blasting say looking cought the store slippin and buying all of their inventory. Big bow stores don't price everything individually, and ofter time, the price on the shelf doesn't match at the scanner
@JRPGLife2 күн бұрын
I would argue that stores that display their products without prices have been doing it for longer than Phoenix Resale's channel has even existed. It tends to simply be a convenience so they don't have to constantly reprice things as the market fluctuates. 🙂

@JRPGLife so you do not think that owners/ management's feeling get hurt on the losse of potential profits and getting shown your mistakes on an international level. Phenix resale whole thing is base on potential profit which mean the store has a potential losses. Caleb put out a video how I made millions flipping and not think that capitalism would find / think of a way to prevent this potential losses and looking like a fool be cought slipping .
@JRPGLife2 күн бұрын
I think that stores everywhere try to capitalize on profits and make as much as they can on video games. I also challenge you to ask your local game stores about their thoughts on resellers, you might be surprised that the majority of them either don't care, or are barely affected by it. We recently made a video on that exact question and the answers were enlightening ☺️

@JRPGLife I asked and talk about it with all the game stores as I live in Kentucky. He works and dose his thing. But most say he's a nice person but can be difficult when it comes business and meeting "margins "

I don’t understand why everyone uses pricecharting when pricecharting is usually never accurate compared to just looking at recent sold listings on eBay. There have been making times I’ve looked at pricecharting and they would have loose copies calculated in their complete prices. Reason why prices are so under on pricecharting compared to looking at eBay sold listings.
@JRPGLife7 сағат бұрын
Pricecharting is used because it has an API that gathers data directly from eBay sold listings only. Next time you go to pricecharting.com, take a look at where the program shows it's getting the price data from, they are all eBay sold listings ☺️
@JohnnyCProduction6 сағат бұрын
@JRPGLife yeah I use Pricecharting many times but when I compared it with searching for eBay sold listings by game title with condition and or using the upc code, I see much different results at times. Especially for cartridge based games. People are usually paying more than what PT is giving as their average price so it’s giving people a false price. I work at a game store and I have dealt with customers that will only look at PT and if the price is not exactly the PT price, like even a dollar higher they won’t be interested especially for cartridge games that have a huge variety of condition of cart, box and if manual and inserts are available. The complete price on PT is messed up since they are counting complete in box prices even if the box is destroyed and maybe doesn’t even have the manual and inserts. I have also need complete price use loose listings at time.

surely you could have a system that scans in the game you have at the price you want to sell it at. Then the system runs a check each morning through the inventory vs something like price charting and lets you know if the price is over/under 5% or something??? If you can run a report on the games you could just put that into an excel and have formulas highlight differences? Then you know you can adjust price stickers just on ones that went above or lower your own set %

That barcode stunt goes beyond caveat emptor. That's deceptive, and the seller should have disclosed that or moved the makeshift store barcode to make the cut out UPC obvious. I would call the store. Despite you living in a different state, you could state that you are upset about not being told. The store owner may give you some discount the next time you visit. This happened to me with a game I bought while visiting my parents and the store owner honored his word upon my return months later, though I had to remind him. Being prompt will cache you some legitimacy, though you care more about having a fair purchase.

I think the one thing that irritates me the most is the refusal to respect the fragility of the games and their cases. Writing, stamping and stickering on the most sensitive parts is highly inexcusable. There's absolutely no reason to put labels on paper covers or stamping discs.
@mattpace1026Күн бұрын
Oh, you mean that thing that's done when the product is first released anyway? Of course, as it soon as it's a resale, suddenly it's inexcusable.

I'm a vegas local and have been to this store a couple of times. but last time was just after covid so its been a while. I just remember not having a good experience with the store associate. I was asking about a PS1 game and his tone and response were as if I offended him by asking at all. lol Can confrim Inital D is big in Vegas. Vegas car culture and nerd culture cross over a lot. most of the time, any events in town having to do with nerd stuff (LvL up, EVO) usually have a bunch of car guys there.

Speaking from someone who collects comics and sports cards, when at a show or at a store my pet peeve is no pricing, if you are having to look it up i am done, first i know you are looking for very top dollar and i could do that anywhere .. and you are taking time away i could be at another booth searching or what have you .
