Well I don't know much about Lewis except that he's kind of a Bible thumper and I understand he's kind of a bigot. Didn't really have a very modern or enlightened view of the differently colored people. But maybe he knew something about him that was good.

It's entirely true that Treebeard was based on C.S. Lewis due to his loud, booming voice during lectures, which could be heard even down the hall at times. It was very common for Lewis to begin lectures immediately as he opened the door to his classroom, and not ending until he had put his coat on and walked out the door, followed by some of his students.

complex characters? I always took professor Kirke as a stand-in for Lewis himself, explaining Lewis's theological position. He even hits the kids with the lunatic/liar/Lord trichotomy. But I suppose his character fits Tolkien. Conversely, _Out of the Silent Planet_ strongly hints that Elwin Ransom is Tolkien (and the epilogue states outright that the events really happened but the names were changed). But it must be a younger Tolkien than the one we see in interviews after he became famous.
