People don't really know how unique this is. They have been showing of historic flights at several occasions. To have SK60, J21R, Tunnan, Lansen, Draken, Viggen and Gripen flying at the same time is truly an event. It's over 70 years of jet-fighter aviation history in the air at the same time.

And more important: Sweden is a small country, with less than 10 million inhabitants, but very clever ones. They make their own high tech jet fighters and other airplanes, high tech naval vessels, high tech electronics (cellphones, audio equipment, etc), high tech cars (Volvo, Saab), the best blue water yachts... and everything you will ever need and with the best quality... And all that with less than 10 million people. The USA need more people than that just to find a name for a future fighter project!
@WarblesOnALot7 жыл бұрын
+Vilma Vallejos G'day, Yeah, I was thinking a lot of that, comparing it with us here in Oz...; in 1945 we were all set to produce an indigenous Fighter called the CA-5, but successive Governments decreed that we be Unkle Spam's pet Attack-Trained Chiahuahua, and therefore our Defence Department bought (initially) NATO Equipment (Belgian FN-SLRs, Mirage Fighters, German Leopard Tanks etc), and then almost exclusively AmeriKan everything... ; and whereas once we had a Manufacturing Industry, now we're China's Farm, Quarry & Mine-Site... Apparently, after Australia helps Tronald Dump to lose AmeriKa's next Asian War..., Australia will be a Chinese Colony for the next 1,000 years....; which is why the 2nd most-spoken Language in Australian Homes - behind English - is Mandarin..., according to the findings of the last two Census Surveys...(!). Well Done, Sweden ! Good Luck with Global Warming, we'll all need it. ;-p Ciao !

The howl of the Draken from the front reminds a lot of the Vulcan. But then the growl from behind the airplane, when it soars past. Living in Sweden, especially only a few kilometers (1.5km to be exact) from a "Flygflottilj", now defunct; air traffic school instead--growing up and to this date, it's amazing when the Draken comes to visit. You know that it's the Draken even before it's in the range of your sight. I think I had a pretty good childhood, my father was a captain in the Air Force and so when I was a young buck, he'd take me there instead of kindergarten. I used to sit outside of the barracks and watch the planes take off and land. This is my most clear memory from my childhood.

Viggen (lightning) is one of the only plans that have made the change to lock the radar on the SR-71. The Sr71 was flying over the the northern part of Sweden and they did it so many times that the Swedes know their track.
@sczimm306 жыл бұрын
Actually the British Electric Lightning was also able to briefly sustain radar lock on the the SR-71 as well and they would "play games" with the the Blackbird crews when they would depart and return to the RAF bases in Scotland.
@derekheuring46466 жыл бұрын
ISP: There's a world of difference between achieving radar lock and actually shooting an SR71 down. The SR71 had a top speed of Mach 3.3 while most Air to Air missiles of the day were slower, so launch all the missiles you want, you're simply wasting tax payer's dollars. Yes, later versions of missiles such as the AIM 7, which the Viggen carried were faster than the SR71 but would run out of propellant before knocking the SR71 down. The only aircraft that might have had a chance to shoot one down is the MiG 31 armed with the R33 missile but, of course we'll never know for sure.

@derekheuring46466 жыл бұрын
FR: Every aircraft has an absolute top speed, why don't you stay off social media until you get an education son. In fact let's start your education now, why don't we? The only time Viggens caught up to the SR71 from behind is when the SR71 was flying on one engine to save fuel. You'd know that if you were educated and weren't an angry little twerp. In any event, you've got bigger problems in Sweden than bragging about catching up to an SR71 on one engine, how about Sweden becoming the 'Rape Capitol of Europe'? Doesn't it bother you that your women are being raped every day by Muslim immigrants? Why don't you grow a pair of testicles and protect your women instead of annoying adults on the internet?

When I was a child I often saw the Draken from the Danish Air Force flying over. Later I learned what a remarkably technical achievement the plane was, considering it flew as early as 1955. The swedes made this investment to make it not worth the trouble to the Soviet Union to attack Sweden. I'm sorry that Denmark today is pushed into buying fighter planes in US, actually I'm sorry that we need such planes at all, even though such machinery fascinates me.

Pedro Scotta; Tunnan means "Barrel" in Swedish and it was a nickname because it looked like one. Lansen came next and mean '"Lance" . Then came Draken which means "Dragon" in Swedish, "Viggen" is a Baltic seabird and now JAS GRIPEN, GRIPEN means Griffin, a Nordic and Greek mythical creature, with the body below the neck of a Lion and the head of an Eagle. JAS means J "Hunt", A means "Attack" and S means "Surveillance".
