Thanks for a really good intro video. JS8 Call looks like a very useful tool for the Ham radio toolbox. 73.

Very nice overview of the basics. I just got my install up and running last evening and quite accidently made a contact. LOL. Now I know how it supposed to work. The basics anyway. 73 de W5KAL

Thanks for the video. Some questions: At time stamp 8:30 you talk about mode speeds and band conditions. How does one know if the speed they chose is too fast? Is there a rule of thumb for what speed to choose? Where is the best place to check current conditions? Thanks.
@KM4ACK2 жыл бұрын
I almost always start a conversation in "normal" speed. If the signals are strong, I will move to the next higher speed and confirm the other operator still has good decodes. If so and the signal is still strong, I may try the highest speed. If decodes suddenly start failing, I'll revert to the lower speed that was working. I may move to the slowest speed in order to gain a contact with a weak signal station. It is painfully slow but sometimes just the tool needed to make the contact.

Ah, things were going well on the setup until you got to the bit about the Radio and Audio. This is where I have a problem and so far not resolved. I realise there will be a multitude of configurations but I cant get my FT897 and UD04YA cable to work. Frustrating as the setup works for WinLink?

Thank you for the video. I have one stupid question ... what is the send button? I don't see it on the interface. I assume it's the Enter key?

Pulled out my old pi and tried it. It boots, but i cant seem to get js8 to setup on my 891. Everything works on my windows laptops, but not my pi. I can't seem to find my digirig under the port settings. What is the digirig usually for the raspbary pi 3 using the newer raspberry pi os?

I don't want to sound negative, but, uh, how do we use this? Software running, audio is green, hearing whistles, nothing decodes. How about a video that shows how to make it actually work?

I need a little bit of help. For some reason I don't have any options at all for audio. I have a Mini Pro SC that I use with my KX2, I have no problems using this on a windows laptop. I'd like to get this working with my Raspberry Pi 400. What do I need and how to I go about getting what I assume is a driver for my Raspberry Pi 400? Thanks!

Question! On the settings frequency tab, there is the option to change the frequency at specified times. Does that actually work? I have not been able to get it to work. Although it does pop up a message box saying it will change frequency in 25 seconds or so. However the frequency change never happens, yet I can change it manually from JS8Call.
@KM4ACK2 жыл бұрын
Assuming you have rig control configured, it should work. I use it quite often with the latest version of JS8Call. You can also ask in the JS8Call forum where a great group hangs out that is always willing to help - groups.io/g/js8call/topics

I have played around on js8 call, i can do heartbeats, and answer heartbeats. I get no answers when i call cq, or when i try to answer cq's. I am assuming I am doing something wrong....any help would be appriciated
@KM4ACK2 жыл бұрын
If you can decode heartbeats and answer heartbeats, there's probably nothing wrong with your setup. A good way to verify is to send a heartbeat. If you get replies, all is good with your setup.

In the far right window, stations heard, i often see a telephone symbol before the call sign. What does that mean? Good video! Answers many of my JS8Call questions. SV0SGS
@KM4ACK3 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, that indicates that they are calling CQ.

I tend to get spurious decodes when i set to 3 passes. It will decode to nonsensical call signs, etc. Do you notice this with 4 pass decoding?
@KM4ACK3 жыл бұрын
yep. i get them as well from time to time.
@we4selradio5913 жыл бұрын
@@KM4ACK do you notice significantly more good decodes with >1 pass? haven't studied close, but seems only to increase the garbage, without gaining useful calls.

I'm sorry, but all of this is for naught if you can not get your rig to communicate with JS8call on your computer. It is literally a non starter. Specifically in my case, I can not get my Elecraft KX3 to communicate with JS8Call. Test transmit goes red, hamlib times out and can not connect. I can not enter the frequency of the band in the upper left, even when I use the drop down menu. I also select the KX3 on the radio setup on the menu. No help. No sign of transmission by the KX3 either on the lower left vertical transmission bar. I am using an advanced Lenovo core i7 10th gen computer running Windows 11 and the latest JS8Call version 2.2.0. I don't even know whether to select LSB or data transmission mode on the Elecraft. Neither works. Unless I am mistaken, isn't JS8call a major advancement in SDR almost like SSB was to CW, or RTTY or FSK31 etc? It is incredible that the major radio manufacturers have not outlined the directions to connect their specific rig to computer to enable JS8Call. I have a Signalink but this shouldn't be required with sound cards installed on modern computer, correct?
