Grafting Fruit Trees | Broken Apple Tree - How do I save the fruit variety?

If a precious fruit tree brakes for some reason, here are a few techniques you can use to try to save the fruit variety. Grafting is one of them, if the original rootstock is still viable. You can also graft a few scions to another rootstock to make a copy of the tree. And if you don’t have rootstocks available, you can also try to root a few cuttings of the main tree. If rooted, they will keep the variety viable, at least until you find an adequate rootstock.

I pruned back the central leader in my Pink Lady apple tree 2 months ago and instead of throwing it in my wood pile I decided to put it in a bucket of water with some root grow. I did the same with some cherry, peach, and plum branches and put them in the same bucket. The Pink Lady branch is about 1 1/2” wide and 4’ tall and even has a connected branch that is about 1” thick. It has leafed out like nothing has happened and I am sure that if I were to put it directly in the ground I would have another tree. The cherry tree branches are still going strong so I put them in dirt last week and they are still alive. The plum branch was about 2” wide with visible buds and it has since popped through a tiny green bud at the top that I bet will keep growing into a new tree itself. I can’t wait to find out!

Hi, Jeremy. Thanks for the comment. Rooting most fruit trees isn't too dificult, but very few grow well on their own roots. Most are grafted into robust rootstocks for that reason. That's why its not done more. But, sometimes, rooting a few branches can svae the variety and, later, we can cut a few scions to graft to a selected rootstock.

Great video as usual! I grafted some cherry trees from our very old orchard. The scions were quite thin as the trees are old and there's not much regrowth each year. I should have covered those scions in tape too I guess, it looks like they dried out..

Hi, Timo. Thanks for the comment. Drying out is one of the main reasons that grafts fail. Thin scions don't have much moisture inside and, until the vascular tissues join and sap starts flowing, they will have to survive with what they have. It's always a good idea to protect them against dehydration for graft success.

Hello Mestre, I'm so sorry to hear about your favourite apple variety. I hope the measures you've taken are successful and we get to see follow-up videos in future. Just a suggestion: should you not apply mastic sealant on the cuts on the tree you've planted to avoid dehydration on the cut branches? I've pruned my apple tree too harshly last year after the winter and struggled for some branches to kick back into growth in the spring because I did not seal the wounds after pruning. That may help you as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience - it's so helpful. I finally managed to get 6x apple and one pereira grafts to take on my apple tree with lots of practice from watching your videos. I will have to wait for the spring to see what progress they made, for now it's just new leaves from some of the nodes pushing out before our winter in RSA. Keep well!

I am not a fan of the drilling technique. The cambium area is just below the bark (and its very narrow), so the plant tissues have a very small area of graft union (not very strong in the long run).

Hey just found your channel, excellent content! Wish I saw some of your videos before I did my first grafts ever last weekend. I grafted on to wild two year old trees coming up in my yard, do you have any experience with grafting on to wild rootstock? Any thoughts about it?

I started grafting using wild pear and apple trees that have grown from seeds the birds scatter all around the farm. They are very forgiving rootstocks and are usually quite compatible with most varieties. Just be sure you graft within the same species (using a pear rootstock for an apple variety or vice-versa will fail, as they are not compatible in the long run).

No, it's a problem with the graft. A young tree just can't resist the impact of a 250 pound forestry mulcher.

I've been top working a large stuart pecan tree today making it into better varieties. I'm on my last roll of parafilm. Do you purchase your Parafilm from Amazon? I only use Duct tape and Parafilm on my inlay grafts anymore. I used to use vinyl tape, parafilm, aluminum foil and then a sandwich bag. The duct tape speeds up my process.

In my opinion, it would have been better to keep the scions in your fridge for two weeks, to allow the bark of the rootstock separate as it should. Low chance if it doesn't. Good luck anyway !

I know. I reserved a couple of scions and stored them in the fridge. In case the grafts don't take in the original rootstock (its quite low in the soil, anyway), I will graft those scions to a new rootstock. Thanks for the comment.

When should you take off the grafting tape? On my graft it has been a month and buds has not pushed through on all, some buds are brown but you can see water inside the grafting tape like its sweating. Should the tape come off?

Exposed to full sun, the tape might work as a greenhouse. That can "cook" the buds and make the graft fail. That's why I often use aluminium foil to protect the buds in the first few weeks, until the first leaves start to appear . That might take more than one month depending on the rootstock level of dormancy - it should be starting to wake up from dormancy when you graft it - otherwise, the grafts might have to wait much more time until the sap flow begins and they have a chance to heal and start growing. In your case, I would gently remove or open the tape, to let moisture out and give the buds a chance to survive.

I'm using a local brand that has a very good quality. I use mainly 2 of their products (horse manure based or poultry based). Thank you for this video! It gave me an idea for a pear tree that has never produced pears. Can I cut it off and graft in some scions from trees that I know for sure produce fruit? It is mid-April in North Carolina and weather is still very cool. The trunk is about 4-5 inches in diameter and I would have to use scions from trees that have already leaved and flowered. If so, how high off the ground should I saw it off? What diameter scions should I use? Thanks for any advice!

Would it be possible to do a bridge graft to re-attach the entire tree to the original rootstock? I imagine you might have to trim the tree back substantially as you did to replant the broken tree. For mechanical strength, maybe you could center-drill into the stump and the broken stem, and pin them together with a dowel? Alignment might be a bit tricky. That's an interesting idea. It probably could be done but I fear that the result would still not be satisfactory. Apart from the connected grafted areas, the variety and the rootstock wouldn't fuse tissues and that area could prove fragile and prone to diseases and other problems. If the grafts take, the resulting tree will be much more reliable. It just takes more time.

The upper part of the tree, graft two m106 to the lower trunk as if you were doing an inarch graft on a girdled tree.

Thinking about this, I would try grafting 4 rootstock low on the trunk, and have the graft just above the soil level, and stake the tree well. Just to see if it could be done. What variety is the tree?

Its a protected variety, that I was trying to get for some time and, incredibly, a Slovakian nursery was selling online. They probably don't have a license to sell it so, although i bought it legally (and it was very expensive because of the shipping), its probably better not to say the name online.

Hi, Michele. If they are well adapted to your region you can try them as rootstocks, for sure. I have done it before, with acceptable results. But, keep in mind that the commercially selected rootstocks can be more productive and you don't have surprises regarding final tree size (seedlings can produce much larger trees, that might required more heavy prunning to keep small). But, there's no harm in trying. They are free, after all. :-)

Can you recommend somewhere to buy the parafilm? I have bought online from amazon but it always seems to come from China and I don’t think they are biodegradable, the quality is very variable, also, I’ve not been able to find the mastic/graft sealant anywhere. I made my own this year with beeswax, linseed oil and some tea tree oil for anti bacterial - it seemed to work fine but the rats like the linseed oil too much and destroyed many of my grafts! It was very sad ☹️ I hope your apple tree survives! Ciao!

Hola, Jeronimo. Eso circula por la web pero, personalmente, nunca lo he comprobado. Probablemente va a depender de la substancia que cada fabricante utiliza como adhesivo en la cinta. De cualquier forma, se es una preocupación, existen cintas que son hechas específicamente para esta función y que se pueden utilizar sin problemas (pero bastante más caras).

It depends on the fruit species you are grafting and the time of year but, usually, its a good idea to remove the plastic 3 to 4 weeks after the graft is done or the buds won't be able to brake it and grow.

Hi, Rey. It's a BCS (made in Italy). The quality of these small tractors is very good. They are durable and can take several different appliances. I changed to a more powerful motor in the one I have (it was a 730 - a model discontinued now). É uma variedade que consegui comprar, incrivelmente, num viveiro da Eslováquia! - custou-me os olhos da cara só em portes - e que, tanto quanto sei, ainda se encontra protegida por patentes. Comprei-a legalmente, mas não sei se quem a vendeu o podia fazer. Por isso, é melhor não tentar a sorte e evitar possíveis problemas ao mencioná-la aqui.

The tree was store bought. However graft it, have done it too low. When planting I had no alternative and the graft union was just above the soil level. That's why, when regrating the broken root system, I had to dig around it, so the new graft stays above ground.

My tree survived that, it had only 2-3 little roots left, but it was in fall when it happened.

Thanks for the comment. That's precisely the problem. The weather is warming very quickly and that might prove fatal to the planted piece. But the grafts will probably pull through.

I wouldn't do it. Even if the graft seems to take, at first, they are incompatible in the long run.

Hiii man I am Indian and I live in hot climate. Is there any possibility of fruiting the apple tree in hot climates?because I have five apple trees and I made them from seeds.I follow that three trees are not well, but two trees are heat resistant and Insect free.Is there any possibility of producing fruit on these plants? Hi. You would have to try and get very low chill apple varieties (here's one that is usually rated at 100 hours - www.orangepippin.com/varieties/apples/dorsett-golden). These might produce with a very low number of cold hours (hours below 7 degrees centigrade). Regarding your seedlings, you probably will be disappointed at the results. They might take quite a few years to start flowering and if they produce a few fruits, they probably will be small and not very sweet. I ask the same question before I read yours. I've bought from Womack nursery and Amazon also. Maybe he has a cheaper place. I need a full 6 roll box. I'm on my last roll and I graft every year in my pecan orchard plus some fruit trees

As I said to James, I buy my Parafilm in Amazon. But lately the usual supplier isn't listed, so its probably out of stock. There's an alternative (that can also be found in a few pharmacies) - Parafilm-M. Its not exactly the same material but I know a few fellow grafters that use it, even though you have to cut it in smaller pieces (the roll is much wider than the grafting Parafilm).

There are some recipes on the web (search "homemade pruning sealer" ) if you want to try making you own. Its not that expensive and I don't use lots of it, so I prefer to buy it.

Hi, James. The Vitorinox grafting knives can be found online in several stores. Amazon has them, for instance. And there is also a website from Felco - www.felco.com/us_en/our-products/knives.html?p=2 The other one will be a bit harder to buy as its made by a local craftsman and I don't know if the store that usually cares them, sells to other countries (probably, not). But there are similar models from other brands, like Opinel, Tina or Felco.

It looks smaller in the picture than yours. Gilberto Ferreira Aveleda doesn't seem to be selling online. I don't think you need to buy it if the blade is small. Victorinox knives are enough.

There is root in thr broken tree.. if you would chop off 8 inches feom root there is full chances of it rooting back again.

The small root in the broken tree comes precisely from the graft union. Its probably from the variety (not from the rootstock). So the resistance of the planted broken tree will be low. I planted it, anyway, as you probably saw in the video (the top has 2 small branches with leaves, so a full system: root-leaves - no advantage in chopping the tree). If I had doubts the grafts would take, I could also root a few scions of the variety, just to keep the variety safe until the next grafting season.
