Thanks for clearing that up for us :) great video. I might have to look into a cnc’d custom heatsink for the ally. If we can get the temperatures down into the mid 50’s on turbo 30w we will be winning big time. Looking forward to the battery mod
@cppctek
@cppctek 2 ай бұрын
Heck yeah thanks !!! Honestly we could get them down a few more c with forced air on a good heatsink or at the very least lower fan noise a bit with better heat distribution to a larger heat sink but we would need more air to cool it down. The heat has to go some where or either be forced air into it cooling it. So too much heatsink could be worse unless it’s got a way to transfer the heat some where else that does get cooler air introduced like outside the case or via the fan mod I’ve done prior

I already had temps in the very low 60s (anywhere from 61°c -65°c) in the 30w turbo mode just from removing the dust flap and the mesh from the vent holes. I did a custom fan curve of 100% fans at 60° and above (lulz) but it works. The only time temps climb is during the short bursts, but even then they only hit 71° or so. I just got one of the diy handhel shells in today, threw it on during my lunch break at work, so far temps dropped by 1 or 2°, nothing overly impressive. My thermal pad seems to only make contact with the heat pipe though (judging by the impression left in the pad itself) i think they could have used an other mm or so of thickness on the pad.

FWIW the Samsung 990 pro revision are single sided (even the 4tb one); can also confirm I am able to fit the 4tb 990 pro with preinstalled heat sink into the handheld diy case, only by having to snip the two posts off the backplate and taking some of the width off the thermal pad that comes with it; no bulging whatsoever though (plus you even get to see the little red light on that NVME shine right through this little hole in the middle of the handheld diy case, so I guess that’s sort of cool too)

Nice. Believe it or not 65c on an nvme isn’t cool. Some drive manufactures say the drive controller core temp is 65-70c and anything over that it’s thermally throttling and many can go into protection mode and blue screen. I did a video speaking to drive manufactures directly and got some very surprising answers. They really suggest keeping them well below the limits when possible. Ideally the sweet spot on an nvme drive for longevity, and being 100% sure it’s within the safe operating range is in the 40-50c range. I try to target that for my nvme temps

I put a Samsung 990 pro 4tb in my Ally. Single sided. Went with 0.5mm pads. 18w/mk thermal conductivity. Ice PC 2mm heatsink. 70c max temps on load. Should I go thicker in your opinion with the thermal pads and heatsink? I clipped the support brackets from my stock backplate and did some modding to increase the size of the vents and re routing the air pressure by using foam basically cutting off air supply to the controller quarters. BTW, been using Kryosheet for years now. Simply the best and I'm glad you recommend it and know whats up. Only thing with kryosheet is that you cant handle it with bare hands. Thats where alot of people take a wrong turn and hurt performance. Always use tweezers to apply.

@cppctek
@cppctek 2 ай бұрын
990 pro has a super spicy fast controller and will get really hot. You’ll want a 4 to 4.9mm heatsink for sure. The ekwb one I use is a perfect fit. Definitely use a 1mm pad like gelid extreme or fuji or something good. .5 is too thin and actually doesn’t work as well on nvme drives no matter the thermal rating. I’ve tested back to back dozens of sizes and brands and always use 1mm pads. It’s also the perfect height to allow the difference between the controller and memory so it levels out better with the hearsink under good pressure. The .5 often won’t sit flush and won’t have enough squish to bridge the distances perfectly. And you’re spot on with handling kryosheets. They also are a lot better than the. Previous thermal grizzly sheets also. They are awesome. Dm me and I’ll send you a video tomorrow when I’m back in my office and show you a huge tip on cooling that spicy drive and what I’m using so you can see a better up close video on fitment and the small details that are hard to get from my top down view. I’m thinking about getting a better camera this week so you maybe seeing way better quality soon anyways.

@cppctek Thanks for creating awesome content. As a fellow modder, I love the way you tinker. We are very similar with our passion for tinkering. I got the 990 pro because it uses a smaller NM process on the controller and is fairly power efficient compared to other gen 4 drives. I will definitely be getting some gelid ultimate 1mm pads and a 4mm heatsink for the nvme. The ek water block heatsink is a bit pricey but I'll give it a try. (EDIT: ITS OUT OF STOCK :/ ) Going with another 4mm heatsink.

@cppctek
@cppctek 2 ай бұрын
Yes it would be possible. The trouble is we would need someone savy with 3d printing software who can both scan the image in 3d and export it to the pc and edit that image to your liking. You could send over some stock panels to someone who does 3d scanning and design and offer them your suggestions or drawings and they can manipulate the file and image and make it a creation. I’m the worst with that stuff. It’s way over my head but some people it’s as easy and drawing with crayons 🖍️ to them. I myself can barely draw a stick figure lol

Not sure if OS/software mods are your type of thing, but I'm highly interested in the potential of lower temps and more performance with Z1E on Atlas OS 0.4 where they have finally given options for greater customization within privacy, security and better utilization on Windows 10 and 11. Where you have multiple Z1E devices, I'd be highly interested in this. All I've done so far on my Z1E is get rid of Windows 11 and rollback to Windows 10 which just cost me RGB lighting control, but I don't care about RGB anyway, so it's disabled. On the hardware modding side, I'd love to see possibly a frame around to expand the thickness of the back plate contact for larger hands greater comfortability if that's something possible with 3D printing. Also I can't seem to find any of the magnetic dpad and replacement buttons that you previously showcased in content. I'd love to do a full on white out triggers, shoulder buttons, dpad and thumbstick tops, but seems no one wants to create such things, so I'm stuck with just my ModDIY white back plate and flat back buttons, the TEC cooler(which does great), and a hydrodipped SPIGEN grip case on the back that leaves all the vented areas and back buttons open for access. Love to know if you may be interested in trying to do something with either the TEC and greater potential of 3d printed expansion frames for larger battery support, increased hand size comfort, and maybe even attach some copper shims cut to the heatpipe side to give it better contact and transfer of heat, maybe even offset layered thermal pads and see if possible to still get better cooling with the heatsink and the ModDIY back plate with a thermal pad between the metal transfer plate? Good info. Thanks.

I’ve experienced with w10 vs w11 and in my experience I just like 11 more plus there was not much if any differences in fps for me in how I set mine up. Some people just like w10 better and that’s def a thing. D-pad mod I really need to experiment and try to get one made for the ally but I’m really bad with 3d design software. There are some ally grip options out there like the jsaux grip sleeves are good but there not good lookin color wise against my purple backplate. @@cppctek I look forward to the content checking out Atlas OS 0.4 and where it's no longer by the development team admission going to be full install each update and will get patched upgrades now that things have been reworked. Do you have any advise for apps that will allow core control that's more than just general power adjustment, separate from GPU control, so I could run similar to steam deck at 4 cores 8 threads and keep full GPU utilization for a "travel mode" better experience? I've asked ASUS in my testing time having almost a year with it, but it's not gotten added of yet. The JSAUX sleeves are too loose for me. Really I just need the handheld to be thicker. I wish ASUS would consider a Deluxe edition with a larger HDR native landscape VRR display. Also the other big thing I'm trying to find is a white bezel Anti Glare tempered glass or white vinyl bezel covering to further my white out project upgrades. Also the L bracket open 1 piece PCIe 4.0 NVME m key 2280 bridge works well for keeping shims or thermal pad spacing under it on my 8TB double sided Mushkin Delta drive. Just for clarification, does using the heat sink with the handheldDIY backplate result in better temps compared to just using the silicone pad it came with? Just don’t want to waste my time if it’s fruitless. Just have a 2230 in it.
@cppctek
@cppctek 2 ай бұрын
Yes because the silicon pad doesn’t cover all over the nvme. The controller and memory don’t get fully covered and will possibly the really throttle performance depending on what nvme you use and how hot the drive gets. Don’t risk not running a heat sink on an nvme. I do not advise it but do at your own risk. I do cover it

My apologies. I misread that this morning as 2280. If your using stock drive with thr 2230 it will lower the nvme temps. But on a 2280 it may lower those slightly but just may not fit perfectly. Dude a SATA drive is just fine, and IT IS fast enough specially for gaming, WTH are you talking about.

Yes and no, it’s fast enough but so is a school bus. It’s fast enough to get you to school but not fast enough to win races. Sounds dumb but downloading games and updates the transfer speeds can get fully saturated quick plus there’s no dram cache on that model oh and the main point. Was 99.9999999999999% of people doing the 2280 mod would never ever buy an m sata drive in 2024, hell they don’t even make them in 4tb sizes. And they don’t get hot so I need to be able to compare real drives people use rather than some weird niche drive from an ancient era that doesn’t produce enough heat at all to see if the heatsinks actually doing a good job or not.

It’s just seems like you wanna shit on the black heatsink solution cause it not from the company your working with in the most blatantly obvious way. You could have easily added a thicker thermal pad to accommodate for it lack of reach due to the NVME clearance. You simply are bias due to having some skin in the game with the competitor back plate company. If it was just a terrible product that on thing but it’s just really obvious how much your just hell bent on not displaying it in any way positively. You could have put the stock drive back on and tested the black heat spreader with it to see thermals as not everyone can’t afford a new better drive. this could be a cooling solution for those individuals that worked well. It’s just look terrible that in no video have you done this sense this product has come out almost as if your actively avoiding doing so to promote the other company. It just dishonest and shows your bottom line is making money first not informing your viewers of what option they have.

Your wrong. I work with both the same. Neither pay me! Didn’t you hear how hopeful I was in the beginning. I was instantly turned off with the fitment and how it doesn’t have mounting pressure.

Also I just realized you commented on the second part of this saga. Did you not watch the part one to this saga? Did you not hear how high energy and hopeful I was ? I did the test in real time

@@cppctek I watched the entire saga as I been looking into getting a device my self sense I have no interest in getting a ps5 to play there console exclusives and wanted something more portable than playing on my Pc and as a result I found your content looking up possible mods upfront before buying to maximize my experience on it sense it’s gonna be a huge difference from my threadripper set up I have and want to get the most of the device. You showed the black heatsink version in the video and within 5 minutes just really shifted toward the other shell almost immediately with just so lil effort to try to make it work in a stock device set up to really display it possible application in every scenario and it pro and cons if one had X mod that mite not be compatible or it worked with X configuration. I personally think the best solution to Cooling on this device would be to have a shell that has something similarly to this black heat spreader that comes mounted in a similar manner but held in place with the back plate shell letting the fins of the heat spreader come through the back plate as to have them exposed to passively help cool due to having a bigger surface area.

Also I go into details because I do have a bigger range of viewers who have had all kinds of questions. I try to dive into every possible scenario and cover all my bases. You’d be surprised how much hate you get by leaving one stone un turned. The skip buttons should still work on here if you’re not interested. If you looking for confirmation bias then i simply and not like other channels where I’m dishonest in my findings or try to steer them in a way where it looks better than it really is
