@@jsgwatches I actually have an ST1901 chronograph movement (non swan neck version), and sadly enough, it's actually my least accurate movement, yet it's still well within a decent standard and is absolutely beautiful to look at. The non swan neck version isn't nearly as accurate as the 3600, however it is still a very pretty movement, and they're both really nice to own 😌

Greetings from the Nap Valley. I think your videos are great I'm hooked. I just sprung for a microscope and am working on a camera setup. I'm determined to master this skill. I'm 77 with a long background in mechanical trade. I still have a steady hand and good eyesight. My major issue is to remember assembly and disassembly order. I completely admire watching folks like yourself that make it look so easy. I'm now fabrication a plexiglass side and end shield on my bench hoping it will help those flying little parts. You're videos are wonderful...great production and presentation. When I first noticed the video description and thumbnail, the movement looked the same as the one in my 2007 Panerai Black Seal PAM183 "clone" that a friend sold me for $125 new. I've worn that watch twice a week since 2007 and it's been pretty much perfect. I alternate it with my Omega Speedmaster Professional, my Rolex Datejust from 1969, and a Bulova Lunar Pilot. That Seagull movement has been so accurate. I recently had it regulated for the first time and it was +- 8 seconds...after 15 years of use. After regulation it was +- 2 seconds.

You have to set the parameter correctly. From this movement its 44 degrees. When you will set the parameter 44 you will get a higher amplitude

This movement is basically Seagulls version of the Unitas 6@@@ range of movements. Same movement Pam 111 used to have inside. Seagull definitely has made their movements far better than they used to. Great video. Subscribed.

Tianjin Seagull is sort of hit or miss as an ebouche maker, but when they make sure their own movements are lubricated properly on their own watches, they're very impressive. Dial and hands come from a brand called Parnis, I'd be willing the case does too, but no telling.

Nice video. It's a great watch to work on and looks beautifull. Now you know that you pay way to much for a Panerai... Some tips: don't use a metal tweezer to pick up the dial. The dial will be damaged for sure. And when getting the mainspring out, get the dial out of the way! Or don't you love your dial? Next: NEVER use your US cleaner for the delicate movement parts. They will be damaged for sure! Try a piece of aluminium foil and you know what I mean.... Oh, and the crown wheel is wrong lubricated. The ring doesn't turn, lubricate the outer diameter of the ring. That part touches the rotating crown wheel. Have fun!

Seagull have certainly upped their game in several movements, the dry movement problem is still a persisting issue where movements are leaving the factory unoiled on certain parts but once corrected you should get a decent 10 year service window at least. I'm seriously looking at getting one of the Seagull mechanical chronograph movements and building from that, maybe a repro TinTin as the movement is only 58 dollars and I reckon 100-150 dollars would get you the parts for a decent mech chrono based around the Venus 175 build which is basically an up to date Strela movement, indeed I have a pristine porcelain Sekonda Strela dial here and if the measurements are correct I can have a beautiful Soviet dialled mech chrono. I worked for rolex the reason you can't buy one from an AD is because roles do there research into who they sell to (very snobbish I know!) But if you walk into a shop to buy one they will tell you its out of stock and take all your details and tell you you will be placed onto a waiting list it isn't the case it's more a case of ifnyour face fits

The first watch I started on was a vintage Seiko LM. after alot of work and reading and scouring the net for old parts I got it running like a peach. I was so happy with myself but after a while a non repairable part just failed on me for just being old and it was kaputs (second driving wheel). Four hundred quid in the bin. It could have been any other part within and id be able to fix it at that point but this was the only riveted gear on the whole bloody watch.

That movement fits in my 4040 Bergeon movement holder:) I have the exact same watch. I just swapped dial, hands, stem and crown. Runs nice, but without service there will always be longterm concerns. I cannot imagine this movement being nicely lubricated for the price. The problem is that underlubrication actually doesn't manifest clearly when a watch is new. Unlike overlubrication (Seiko disease!), which results in low amplitude (under 200°) and inaccuracy.

I mistakenly bought the 4039-p movement holder which only holds movements up to ~25mm 😩 ended up using a case holder for this watch 😅 rumour has it that these Seagul movements leave the factory without any lubrication or regulation, they work an absolute charm once serviced though!

K&d winders are useful but need some care because the spring ends can snap due to the way they are build however another way is to measure the barrel and buy the bergeon to size. Bergeon nr 5 6 7 are most used in seiko's and therefore more obtainable.

I just got one of these cases to make a marriage watch using a 101 year old Hamilton 920 movement and wanted to see if it truly was just press fit between the case back and the shelf at the front. I’m debating trying to make shims or a new spacer ring to better hold it in place so it doesn’t rattle. Maybe a second O-ring for the case back to press on. Excellent vidio... Seagull are great reliable robust workhorse movements I have several watches with this movement no issues at all fairly accurate..... Forget all the rubbish about inhouse movements what a load of tosh... Just a gimmick you buy a mechanical watch with a sellita, ETA, or indeed a seagull they all do the job just fine... You get Rolex with all their ridiculous patented systems, components... Antimagnetic properties what a load of rubbish... Listen I've worn mechanical watches for well over 50years never ever had an issue with magnatism.... Service what's that? If it ain't broke it don't need fixing... Service a watch when it dosent run... I've got watches running and keeping time that have never been serviced in over 30 years.... 👍

As far as “anti-magnetic” properties goes, the only thing I know that affects that is the material of the balance spring. A silicon balance spring (silicium) is anti-magnetic but who puts a mechanical watch (any watch for that matter) near a magnet anyway?

I own the exact same watch, it is works perfectly since the day i bought it. Drop it a couple times, pretty robust i think. Now the glass a bit blured and I can spot dirts on the movement. Currently looking for maintenance service which is quite difficult in my town.

Appreciate the support David! From what I see, I imagine some of the minute/hour/intermediate wheels would struggle to survive constant use, as they appear to be extremely soft. A scenario where someone over winds the watch, or lets the mainspring slip during powering down on a service, could destroy the teeth on any of these wheels. This however is just my opinion, I could be wrong and these things could be bullet proof! That could make for an interesting video

@@jsgwatches I have one of these watches and the durability issue is also my main concern regarding these movements. It performs very precise but it had a winding problem when it has arrived where some of the wheels slip when tension on mainspring gets higher during winding. I had to replace that problematic wheel with an original UT one. I don't know which was it since watchmaker did the job using spare parts from an old pocket watch.

I built one. It's had two movements. Both had winding mechanism failures. The other issue was the case. I have a nickel allergy. This was the worst stainless case I've had for aggravating the allergy, despite an exhibition back.

I bought 3 watches at the site you all know....Ali........s, just to see what i get. And 2 of them have ( at least they claim) the Seagull ST 1901 column wheel with gooseneck. The other is a tourbillon............😆. Worth the effort for a direct service? ( They are still on the way BTW)

Hi! Another awesome watch! I noticed you oiled the pallet fork jewel. Under normal circumstances that jewel does not need oil. I’ve had a couple of these clones too and amplitude has been 270-300. I have a feeling the oil in the pallet fork jewels might be sucking some energy and giving you the low amplitude.

@@jsgwatches Yes (and I'm just starting out on this journey myself) by my understanding you don't lubricate the pallet fork pivot jewels. It seems counter intuitive to me, but I also see the reason not to do it. Oiling the pallet stones is necessary, but the recommended oil appears to be Moebius 9415 (also just called "941" apparently). I think the reason is that it is a fine oil that tends to stay where you put it. Failing that I've seen 9010 used "with care" whatever that means. I think it's probably OK on these slower movements (18000 or 21600 bph) but maybe not so much on something that's flying (eg 36000 bph) Then there's the whole thing about using epilame/fixodrop on the escapement components (to keep the oil where you put it), but we're not really working on anything that's going to benefit from that so much (and it's really expensive even in comparison to Moebius 9010). I shall probably investigate DIY solutions to the epilame - apparently it's basically steric acid in a solvent of some kind (1:100 w/v), or the fumes from heating steric acid is a better option that is superior even to fixodrop. So much to learn... but it is a lot of fun.

I'm working on replacing a Seiko 7009's automatic works. I looked at the price of reduction wheels etc then spotted for just over a tenner a running fast spares or repair jobby which has its original pristine bracelet and now in the dilemma of do I put my rarer other 7009 back on the road or do I keep the freshly arrived one which apart from running fast (not magnets and did the "whap" thingy) is immaculate inside and out and on its original square end shell branded bracelet. Its even got an undamaged movement holder ring its that clean... Think I will pick up one of them cheapo Indian 7009's and harvest the auto worx off one of those and keep the running fast one and fix it up.

I just bought a 1980’s seiko 5 with a 7009 movement for the next video, the movement seems to be in working order, but the crystal is scratched to pieces. I’m going to attempt to sand the scratches out with fine grit paper and polish with some cerium oxide, let’s see if it works 🙏

Nice video. I don’t t see it as a teaching video though. Do you have any videos that focus on servicing the mainspring without speeding up the video? I started my journey modding Seiko 6309 and 7s26 divers. I then learned to service them by watching My Retro Watches here on KZbin. Those movements are also very easy to service and parts are available. I have been able to regulate these watches to a few seconds per day in the dial up positions. I have about 15 of these watches and they all keep time as well as my Omega, Rolex, Doxa, and other higher end Seikos. This has been a rewarding hobby. But I must admit, it can be very frustrating at times. I’ve been in my hands and knees more times than I care to admit!

I am enjoying your videos.These seem to be nice movements to learn on. The only thing I had great difficulty with was the balance jewel spring. When I hinged mine back, it fell out out of the setting and went pinging away into space. A small dot of rodico near the hinge point and good tweezers will help with this. Both movements I ordered also came with no lubrication anywhere. From what I have heard, they normally supply the movements that way and expect the end user to do it. This may be for the movement orders only and not the finished watch. Did your assembled watch seem to have any lubrication? Thanks!

I’d love to get a hold of some actual cleaning solutions as my current method is crude as hell, but importing them to where I live is almost impossible being hazardous substances 😩

Hey there, the reason your amplitude is so low is that your lift angle is wrong for this movement. The ETA 6497 needs a lift angle of 44 degrees to get an accurate read, not the standard 52 degrees you measured at and I suspect the ST36 is the same as it is a clone. Set it to 44 degrees and do another reading and I'll bet you'll see better amplitude numbers^^ Good show otherwise!

hm, I was thinking how hard it would be to finish this movement in a Patek Philippe style. It is really tempting to take it apart and polish everything out, make a mirror finish, edges as well, than add some nice brush lines and put back together. I mean it would not take longer than a day.. what do you say?

There really isn't a right or wrong way everyone dose different things, their way just put the parts in their correct place, and you should be fine. Personally i start with the centre wheel and it's bridge if it has one not all do bridge that is, and go from there, seagull make some real nice movements.

I'm looking at this because I'm interested in following the disassembly of the st36. At 3:25 you start removing the hairspring assembly and then at 3:55 you continue with a smaller piece. On that second piece, you don't identify that part. My question: is it important to know the identification of each and every part to disassemble the movement? I wanted to know what it's called, but it ocurred to me that it might not be necessary. Thanks.

I read a comment from someone mentioning that when a replica factory has a waiting list, its a sign that their products are superior to the originals. In this case, Swissarex is that factory.

Thanks, very informative. What a lovely movement. As a pilots watch it would need a hack for synchronisation. Does the sea-gull have one?

ST36 does not hack, the movement originally is designed to pocket watch.

This ST3600 movement unfortunately doesn’t hack, I believe it was more pieced together for looks rather than function. Seagull do however have other reasonably priced movements that do have hacking functions (ST16 and ST25). I’ll definitely be looking at getting these at some point to give them a try!

Seagull 3600k mechanical ETA 6497 clone. Movement in that pilot watch. I have number of Chinese. Swiss and Japanese timepieces. The 3600 us decent accurate movement. Better than a Rolex kinda a loaded argument. By what standards would you apply to compare the 2. Not to mention Rolex to my knowledge does not have a mechanical hand would pocket watch movement in it's line only automatic timepieces. Great watch Peace

Thanks for a nice video. I have the same kind of watch that i build myself. It's a nice watch and the movement is really reliable, cost friendly and accurate, mine is one of the most accurate watces I have in my collection. I wonder why you labelled the video as restoration, it looks like a brand new movement, not much restoration needed just a service 😊

@@jsgwatches Marshall on Wristwatch revival is good but his choice of watches to work on can be limited. I think making it look possible for the audience to do this themselves is a factor in the pull these channels have. Making the content you would like to see is another; people can tell if you have a passion for what you’re doing. I’m intrigued with the movement that omega and tissot shared in the 60’s/70’s right now. Best of luck from Liverpool.a.

Seagull are licenced Chinese/Swiss watches, the Chinese bought the factory and the design years ago, a nation that invented porcelain and a Moonlander, can surely build a watch.

Great video. I've got a couple of questions about how the ultrasonic cleaner works. I was of the impression that you had to put your watch parts in those mesh baskets and then into the cleaner. However, you had yours a container, in mesh baskets, and then into the cleaner itself. Is this to not damage delicate watch parts?

The containers hold the cleaning solutions I use, the bath has standard water, the container then holds the solution and enables me to reuse the solutions rather than throw them out each time 👌🏻 JSG
