This makes perfect sense. I have noticed the same photophobic response in brown trout.

Even on the kayak I end up shutting the bite down temporarily sometimes with my headlamp if I need to retie or take some photos etc. I even started shutting off my fish finder if I get on fish in less than fifteen feet of water. There's a reason every time you set up on what seems like an infinite amount of fish, catch a bunch and they turn off! Sense of danger, or human disturbance it's something to think about.
@JohnSkinnerFishing9 жыл бұрын
+EliasV I agree on the fishfinder. I've got a spot that I sometimes fish at night in 25' and I need the ff to find it and set up properly. When I get there the screen is loaded. After a few drifts, they're gone. I'm not even sure they're all bass.

For the headlamp try using a red light or put a red filter over your light.

Hey John I know this video is old but like you mentioned using the tiny red light if you use the headlamp with red light it won’t bother the fish at all I’ve used one at night fishing for large mouth bass to see the bank from a boat and caught many large fish casting up on the bank and dragging it back they can’t see it like white light also use it striper fishing here in south jersey

This video is SO vindicating. I yell (scream?) at folks all the time about lights, and they almost ALWAYS respond with an "F YOU". Bet these are the same folks complaining about no fish while I'm knocking out 100 fish nights. I'm sending this to every fishing friend I have.

I usually have this problem with fish poaching immigrants, especially when I'm opposite a bridge. Not only do they shine flashlights over the water they also point them right in my face. To top it all off they want all the undersized Bass I catch and get mad when I tell them no and throw them back
@patrickmoffitt8493 жыл бұрын
It takes fish from 30 to 60 minutes to adapt to light changes because they can't dilate their pupils and are therefore more susceptible to being "blinded" at night by a stray light. It would seem logical that bass would avoid a stray temporary light source as a result. Although you will often find them feeding around a fixed light at night.

Have you found or tried lures with flourescent paint and use a black light to make them glow? Pardon the spelling. I have used this successfully on deep rock fish; 300-500' deep. I am new to surf fishing have not even been out at night yet.

What about fishing shadow lines? I fish bridge shadow lines and goes pretty well. Can bridge lights also be a deterrent?
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 ай бұрын
Stationary lights like bridge lights are a positive because they attract bait and produce shadow lines.

John, I’ve been researching darters since I’ve never used them before in the surf. One piece of info I’ve never really been able to find would be about using them in deep water. Have a good spot on a beach by me that has a channel about 20-30 yards out with some nice current, but pretty deep. Would it be feasible to still throw a darter?
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
They run pretty shallow, so I might consider bucktails or swimshads for what you describe.

I seem to hook stripers on the outside of the mouth instead of the inside with darters quite frequently. It looks like one of the fish you caught had the same result. Does this occur often for you?

Wonder if anyone has ever used these in freshwater for anything? In allot of pike/ musky fishing situations I want a lure that will cast a long ways, run shallow, and work around weeds. With no protruding lip it seems like they would do well around weeds, and they seem to be built for long casts/ shallow water. A pike will hit a pretty fast moving lure, on a fast retrieve could they work without current?

It always amazes me on fish can see in pitch black water
@risenflame9 жыл бұрын
They "see" but they also rely on lateral lines to sense vibration. That's what they primarily rely on at night. Match the "vibration" pattern of the bait can sometimes be helpful in catching!

I used to own a SSV6500 BLS, but would consistently break off lures on the cast.....I was told at my local tackle shop that on the cast, the spool had to be higher than the roller.....I tried this, and still had break offs.....Any tips on how to cast with this reel and not break off the lures?

What about light that is always there, say a parking lot light on a pier that is lit every night, all night. Do you think that too deters Striper?
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
A stationary constant light is often good because it attracts bait and casts shadow lines that the fish can use for ambush positions. Good question.

Ny Jeep Adventurer I can't afford something like that sadly. A buddy of mine works at Bass Pro and I can get either of the rods I mentioned above for well under $200 with his employee discount. Maybe one day after I'm done with college I'll be able to afford something better.

I fish off a dock after work next to where the headboat I work on is docked. I use a 3/8 ounce egg weight above a swivel 16 inch leader little circle hook and any type of fish flesh/ cut bait.
