It helps to set little goals sometimes and make a game out of it. That's what I did this trip when I realized fishing was unlikely to be very good.

Those casts are pretty impressive John. It looks like yer puttin'em right under the over hanging trees and akin to the shady bank. Nice Casting!

It depends on the fishing. For fishing along the mangroves I want the epdl to be able to easily go between power and pedal. Otherwise any kind of anchoring or drift control I want the autopilot.

Gaffs Top Sail Cats are actually very very good eating fish if you bleed them soon. Super clean, white meat - just cut the thin section of darker meat off. Basically fish and chips quality. They are slimy though LOL

Hey John, just wanted to share, a considerable amount of the fishing I do is drift fishing moderate to fast current on a downstream drift for smallmouth bass and trout. Similarly, fish are typically tight to the bank and wind/ lure weight change can affect cast accuracy. (Particularly frustrating when your ripping along with fast current and hook the bank or a tree) This year I added a bait cast reel/rod to the arsenal, the bait cast reel allows you to stop the line immediately with your thumb the instant you realize your lure's headed for the trees. You can also adjust the spool tension to adjust for lure weight and wind direction. I too use mostly spin but pleasantly surprised how many times the bait caster saved me from burning a spot or losing a lure/ wasting time.

That's great advice, but I'm just not a baitcaster guy. I know I should try it one time.

Great video as always John! My fishing bud down here in SE FL and I had a few snook under a wadable bridge tonight and we were complaining about how chilly it was - it was 67F 🤣. My fishing bud friend up on Long Island would kill for 67F right now!

Nice work in cold weather. I am surprised that you don't use snaps. For the past 3 years I've been using japanese Decoy snaps - #2 and #3. Swap baits out super quickly and almost no failures. Recently though I think the supply chain has affected the quality because ever since about a year ago I've been getting some failures when I never have in the previous 2.5 years. Usually when the fish is so shallow they can headstand and twist the bait/snap into the mud.

I'm starting to use #50 Tactical Anglers clips, and they work fine on the spooks I use. I'm just not confident in using them on small soft plastics yet. You might want to check them out because they simply do not fail, and now they make real small ones too. They are the standard in Northeast surfcasting. amzn.to/3DKqD8T

@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks for the tip. I live in NEFL but I have been active on stripersonline long ago. That is when I first became aware of your books and started using those very snaps. However, I changed to Decoy japanese V #2 and #3 snaps due to some TacAng clip failures on overslot reds. I just recently caught my PD Inshore red 32.5" (strongest I have ever fought inshore) on light wire hook z-man jighead+ gulp swim mullet. In fact, all my overslots have been landed with snaps. I exclusively use snaps of some kind since maybe 2015 or earlier on all baits.

Thanks for that info. Maybe I'll start easing into them a bit on my jighead lures. It would make life easier and I wouldn't be carrying 5 of the same rods with different lures.

Southwest Florida. I'm not asking you to show your fishing spots but thinking of heading down to Punta Gorda area north of Fort Mayers in Jan Feb. I just wanted to know if kayak fishing in that area is worth the trip. Thanks, always enjoy your videos. Tight lines

If you mean for stripers, then absolutely yes. I think there's bucktailing mixed in on this video, but there's a bunch of bass and a 41-pounder on the Mossy Mullet - kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4q3mJRuo6ajbJo

Why are you afraid to use clips in Florida
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing Ай бұрын
Great question. I find they're OK on the spook type plugs I use - Dark Matter Feeder Minnow and Rebel Jumping Minnow. Those plugs are a little larger than most of the lures I use and they work OK with a 50# TA clip. The presentation of the small soft plastics, often weighing 1/4-ounce or less, would get messed up by the clip.
