I seem to have a tough time venting past 200 feet. The air will release but eyes are still popped out and they float half the time. If venting, the one puncture on either side is sufficient correct? Or is it recommended to vent both sides? What brand venting tool did you use in the video?

@nickhaddad14 ай бұрын
@@mathewdelilloin those depths, and if the eyes are bulging, I’m definitely using a descending device 99% of the time. Venting only gets the gases out of the body cavity while descending can help all the gases recompress (including in the eyes and any gas bubbles that form under the skin or elsewhere).
@returnemright4 ай бұрын
@@mathewdelillo Definitely give descending devices a shot. We always carry both on board but really only vent if multiple fish need to go back at the same time (probably time to move at that point anyway). It takes an extra two minutes but at least you don't have to worry about them floating off still.

Great video (as usual)! Thank you for featuring Nick from Returnemright. It drives me crazy when I see people snip the protruded stomach and make the claim that since the fish swam away it would be alright. Sadly, I've seen more than a few charter captains do that as well as recreational anglers. Kudos to you Clay for highlighting the proper way to release bottom fish!!

return 'em right is an awesome organization. If you don't believe in this tech, u need to watch the video on their website or watch the NC State video where a grouper, who essentially looks dead from barotrauma, is put on the release rig and videoed on the way back down. The "dead" fish literally comes back to life! Eyes go back, splayed gills come back into place and the fish can be seen SWIMMING OFF! Truly incredible. Everyone who bottoms fish needs to watch this--incredible! Thanks for support them.
@returnemrightАй бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! They definitely won't all survive release but its pretty amazing that many still can after eyes bulging and the stomach coming out of their mouth. Everyone doing a little bit for conservation can go a long way 🙌
@fauxybouy23 күн бұрын
What is the explanation on barotrama they said Nick would give a explanation but he only mentioned the regulations regarding the rigging gear
@returnemright22 күн бұрын
@@fauxybouy Barotrauma (baro=pressure, trauma injury) are injuries that occur in reef fish (not all fish like pelagics) from the change in pressure from the seafloor to the surface as they are reeled up. The decrease in pressure causes the volume of gases in the body of the fish (particularly the swim bladder) to expand which displaces organs and leaves them bloated and unable to swim back down on their own. Typically barotrauma occurs in 50' of water or greater but it varies by fish and gets more severe the deeper you fish. For example, hogfish sometimes get barotrauma really bad from 30-40', while a lot of groupers will be perfectly fine at that depth. You can help more fish survive release (if you have to release them) by learning how to vent properly or use a descending device (which is safer and more effective in a lot of scenarios).

Stephanie, if you drink a warm Ginger Ale, it will settle your stomach down from sea sickness. Cold doesn't work, just room temperature. I checked Florida regulations, and everything on the Florida DOT page lists 102" width, then a permit is required. Florida being the boating capital of the south, probably looks the other way, provided you don't encounter a Karen or Darren. I looked into purchasing annual permits for the 4 states I'd have to travel though and it's $2k a year for all 4. Still cheaper than getting the fine and the Po-Po calling the next state to be on the look out for you. One thing I would pay attention to is exceeding the federal 10K trailer weight limit which most states adopted without having a class A tractor trailer license.

Anything being towed that is over 8.5' wide or over 13'6 high requires oversize towing banners, flags at the corners and at the widest point. I see lots of people towing these big boats on the highway. Without these requirements and a towing permit the DOT can impound your rig. You will see the towing companies that deliver these boats to the dealerships follow these rules. Anything that requires a towing permit is also required to stop at the weigh stations on the interstate.
