This time of the year there isn't much going on from shore. Except Fluke and Searobins and there much smaller then you can get from a boat. Fall will be here soon. And we can all get back on shore lol

That is the C-130 of the AIR NATIONAL GUARD RESERVE from Gabreski Air Base in Westhampton Beach NY. I’ve always seen them quite often when fishing out East. They do a lot of air patrols and training exercises. One day South of Montauk I saw them drop an inflatable skiff out of the plane into the water, and helicopters were training with them. Really cool to watch! I wish Halkias the best with his cool new boat!

"go out and get a quick limit" every trip this year we've nailed a NICE keeper first or second drift.... and our second keeper doesn't come for another 2 hours haha. it's definitely been long days but, plenty of keeper this year! great video, as always, John!

John you mentioned in the vid about Buck tail to teaser ratio, Mine is around 80-90% teaser to 10-20 bucktail( boat) and 70 % teaser, 30% bucktail ( surf) i find my larger fish hitting the buck tail. I do add a larger swimming mullet (5-6”) on the bucktail while normally having a 4” mullet or grub on the teaser. I use a squid skirt on the teaser hook as well on bost while only using gulp on the teaser in the surf. I’ll try lightening up on the bucktail as you suggested. The boat i normally fish on is run by a co worker, normally we have one guy who only uses natural bait, three guys who use a combo of natural and gulp, and myself who exclusively uses gulp. It’s interesting to compare the catches at the end of the day, what seemed to be the ticket and what didn’t. thanks for all you do!
@jbones24225 ай бұрын
I have the exact same results and fish pretty much identical setup weights and gulp lengths except I still go bare gulp no skirt on the teaser hook even on the boat. I get the EXACT Same distribution of fish hitting the teaser or bucktail with the bigger ones on the bucktail haha. Some days though they only touch the teaser I have no idea why but on these days I could pretty much drag a lead sinker on the bottom and catch everything on the 4” gulp teaser. Cool to see you experiencing the same!

On a normal trip I am closer to 50/50 with the bucktail vs teaser. Earlier in the spring I had a trip where all fish came on a 4" swimming mullet on a bare hook. The bait in the water was small so any bucktail was too large to match the hatch
@sd07535 ай бұрын
We use the trolling motor in the ocean all the time. It enables us to use the lightest bucktails as possible

John, thoughts on leaving lots of small fluke in search of bigger? Or do you fish through shorts knowing there are bigger ones? Lots of shorts this year in LI Sound.
@JohnSkinnerFishing5 ай бұрын
Depends where you are. In most places I'd move around a bit. This was Montauk's South Side in one of the better big fish areas. The problem with the Sound this time of year is that there might not be any good concentration of keepers nearby.

I have four of them. The oldest one, a hybrid 20 that I got in 2017, broke a handle. In its defense I was using it on Goliath Groupers in the Gulf with 80# braid and a nearly locked drag.

Unless I need to see the line, I'd rather it blend in with the water, as green sort of does in our waters.

My last three trips were all in my kayak. I had well more than my limit each trip. I kept a total of two fluke for the table over those three trips. I haven't eaten striped bass in about 10 years because I release them all. In Florida, I keep only sheepshead and release all of the snook and reds. Amazing you would give me crap for keeping a few fish when I release the vast majority of what I catch.
