Disclaimer for all the folks who didn't pay attention to Julien's "don't do what I'm doing" advice: activated charcoal is used for people who have ingested poisons/OD'ed on oral medications, so it basically undoes the effects of any kind of medicine, including birth control, so keep that in mind if you're using it in cooking. Maybe use some black gel food coloring instead.

Just a reminder that putting activated charcoal in anything edible is not advisable IF YOU ARE ON MEDICATION!!! The charcoal binds to any "toxics" in the body and flushes them out however this also counts for any medications that are currently in your system!!! It essentially cancels the effects of any medication!! When a substance is used by doctors in poisoning cases and by vets when pets accidentally eat human medication then you know it's not something you should be putting in your body!

@@jessberch7041 So I take a lot of meds that stay in my bloodstream at a therapeutic level all the time, and I once had some black ice cream and freaked out about it so I looked it up. In short you are correct. Don't take your medication within one hour/an hour and a half of eating or drinking anything with charcoal in it, because that's about how long it takes to leave the stomach. Obviously this is different if you have a disorder that slows that down. I wasn't able (and still am not able) to find an actual study showing harm caused by charcoal absorbing your medications, but it's theoretically sound, so be careful. I chose never to eat black foods made with activated charcoal again. Source: medical scientist and paranoid chronically ill person

I learned this from experience, I put an activated charcoal cocktail on the menu for Halloween five years ago, and got a little nervous about it when I had a guy drink 15 of them across the span of one night. So I went down a research rabbit hole. Taking one tablet of activated charcoal probably fine, but when you put it into food or drink you have to take into account that a customer might literally have 15 of them at one time or might come in and order it regularly, so you just have to be super careful that it doesn’t have any side-effects that the average person might not be able to intuit.
