Members of former President Jimmy Carter's Secret Service detail carried Carter's casket out the doors of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and into a hearse in Americus, Georgia. The former president's body then departs for Plains, Georgia, before heading to Atlanta on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
The official state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will be held Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the White House confirmed Monday.
The Carter Center released a statement saying the family has accepted an invitation from Congress for Carter, who died Dec. 29, 2024 at 100, to lie in state at the Capitol rotunda. Funeral services began on Jan. 4 and end on Jan. 9, moving from Carter's home state of Georgia to Washington, D.C.

In June of 1979, we moved from Tennessee up to Missouri. We moved to Clarksville, Mo, which is right on the Mississippi River and at Lock and Dam 24. In August, President Carter and his family traveled about the Delta Queen. I was in the crowd that day, and being a Boy Scout had a birds eye view. The President disembarked the River Boat and walked through the crowd. At 12 years old, i had never seen such a famous person. In that crowd was a man who shook the Presidents hand. Some twelve years later, I would marry that guys daughter. It was amazing to see a President of either party. My father in law was a lifelong fan of President Carter. Rest in Peace Mr President.

Gov Kemp, I'm a Republican- a GA Native disgusted by your absence at the Carter Center. You snubbed a humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize recipient from my native state. Its disgusting on so many levels you didn't see that YOU should Honor Personally President Carters Legacy.
