This franchise has certainly had its ups and downs over the years. But no matter how disappointing some of these games are, Sonic the Hedgehog as a whole, will always be one of my favorite game franchises of all time. The vibrant, exciting levels, the epic stories, the soundtracks that absolutely slap, the cool 90's charm and heroic nature of Sonic himself, and of course the rush felt while rolling around at the speed of sound make this a series worth remembering and holding out hope that the next game will be better than the last.

What I think is worth mentioning is that in the japanese version of TSR, Sonic mentions to Silver in a pre-race intro, that Silver has lost his fighting spirit and how when they first met, he always said stuff like "I'll destroy you" and stuff akin to that. Silver saying he doesn't remember said things happening. This confirming that Sonic is probably the only character who remembers the events of 06. Or at least the ones he expirienced

Knowing Sonic & (possibly) Shadow know what unfolded in 06. Silver would have a hard time remembering his story in 06 as he's now a clean slate, besides the familiar feeling he had with Blaze the Cat. I'm okay with the event of the game being exclusive to specific characters or exclusive to Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog was my first ever video game. I'll never forget getting Sonic 1, 2, and 3 with a Sega Genesis 3 for Christmas when I was 5. Here I am years later, and the only other franchise to hold an equal place of love, reverence, and appreciation that Sonic will always hold is LoZ. When it came to Mania and Forces, I always considered Mania to be canon to both timelines. Mania sends Modern Sonic to encore mode to explain where the Ruby at the beginning comes from. And Mania sends Classic Sonic to Forces, and then that sends him to Mania Adventures. I know Izuka said Mighty and Ray are exclusive to Classic or whatever, but we also are talking about the same series that reconnected the two timelines anyways. So who cares. Besides, Gens featured Mighty & Ray posters and I just love Mighty & Ray to much to not want them to make the jump to modern titles.

Yeah, I've always been pissed that Izuka prevented them from actually being actually expanded upon. It'd be great to give them new designs, voice acting, fleshed out personalities (maybe Ian Flynn would take inspiration from the Archie versions if given the chance), and give us their first cannon interactions with the Chaotix. Plus it'd be great to finally reveal what the hell these two have been up to since the classic games, though since those Gens posters say they're missing, perhaps something bad happened to them.

Imagine how much faith Sega could restore in their audience by doing a full reboot of the story and doing it right. Everyone wants the story starting at Sonic Adventure to be done in a way that really makes sense so if they did full remakes of those games people would obviously buy in. It's been long enough that the old audience has forgotten a lot of the game, the new audience would see it as fresh material, and most of the story for the next like 4 games needs to be revamped regardless so it seems like it could kill many birds with one stone and take Sonic back into its more serious direction which makes more logical sense than appealing mainly to children. I mean, most sonic fans are adults nowadays.

Don't know if this would be a good thing for Sonic franchise. Something feels strange for me when a franchise's whole focus is remaking/rebooting old games and not creating anything new. Sonic's lore/plot really is a mess, but... well, this seems like those people who live their lifes remembering and reviving the past, unable to experience the present and venture in the future. In reality, I get this feeling with Sega's treatment to Sonic franchise too: they're giving a HUGE importance to nostalgia, and it feels strange.

Its noteworthy that Sonic X gives explanations for all the plot holes mentioned in Sonic Adventure 2. While not 100% canon, you could argue certain aspects as being retcons. For instance, A section of GUN was trying to cover up the incident regarding Project Shadow, & intentionally made Sonic the scapegoat for Shadow's crimes in order to continue the cover-up. As for Rouge & the Master Emerald, her Emerald radar found it while looking for the Chaos Emeralds.

I think another thing working with the Riders games in canonicity is the fact that with Frontiers confirming Tangle and in the process the IDW comics (which take place after Forces) are canon to the main universe and in the final stretch of the Metal Virus arc in the IDW comics Amy called in the Babylon Rogues to help the heroes get the Chaos Emeralds so Sonic and Silver could go Super to cure Sonic and the world so Riders and Zero Gravity (preferably not Free Riders though cause frick that game) have to be canon and take place at least before Forces so that can happen, not like futuristic places like that aren’t weird to suddenly see after Metropolis in Forces

In fairness to Sega, with regards to the Sonic 3 release before the game was "finished" (that is, with the &K part), it isn't as simple as "never mind, do the Happy Meal toys later". Deals like that always come with lengthy contracts and all sorts of terms that mean Sega's hands were tied before they realised S3&K wouldn't be done in time. It's not that their priority was "yay Happy Meal toys!". It was contractual obligation and not being sued by McDonald's for breach of contract.

Both as one of those fans who, as you mentioned, cares more about the characters and the world they live in than the gameplay itself - but also just....you know..as a fan of the series it was awesome to see such a video video decicated to sonic and the story it tells. To be honest I even took some notes and saved the final timeline image to help for my own sonic works and possibly making my own "headcannon" for the timeline of events! Sonic will always be a huge part of my life and I'm beyond happy that nowadays more people seem to be willing to show their love for sonic, unlike when I was a kid and it was just....the lame thing to be into. I've always considered Ristar, Dynamite Headdy, Flicky and Bonzano Brothers to take place in the Sonic canon, I don't know why Ristar happens at the edge of the Milky Way, Flicky happens before Sonic 1 and Dynamite Headdy and the Bonzano Brothers takes place in a manufactured dome made by Dr.Robotnik, similar to The Truman Show.

My recommendation is, anytime they "confirm" anything, take it with a supreme grain of salt. Mania and Forces "confirmed" that Classic Sonic was a different character from another dimension. With interviews backing up that there was a human world and an anthro world. Now Mania and Forces are being directly contradicted with this new status quo. As stated in the video, it is purely how I make sense of the Sonic universe, because the things they say don't add up.

I’ve played generations and forces and mania but I felt like it was just that thing that I would get into a little and then immediately stop like a month later and that’s what happened but when I found you a sonic generations video and your whole retrospective it made me realize just how good some parts of this series is to be honest I’m not the biggest fan of sonic adventure one, but I still love that game because of the ambition you got me into sonic and I am incredibly grateful. My head canon on the silver/mecha/metal sonic conundrum is that metal sonic only appears in CD due to Eggman's time travel shenanigans. After he is destroyed in that game Eggman makes attempts at recreating this machine from the future by creating silver sonic, then mecha sonic before finally recreating the same metal sonic he saw back in CD

Little do people know that Labyrinth Act 4 (a.k.a. Scrap Brain 3) from Sonic 1 is actually extremely easy. There's a shortcut at the very start of the level that, if you stay on the upper path, skips basically the whole level. The more you know. Unleashed does have the most high-quality opening of any Sonic game, and that game is my favorite of all time (The HD version, obviously). I, too, have wasted a lot of my breath on this hedgehog, believe me. And I'm not gonna stop any time soon.

51:26 correct me if I’m wrong, but I think one of the scenes in Frontiers actually does canonize the fan theory. Both Knuckles and Sonic state how similar the Ares Island is to Angel Island (that’s somehow besides the fact that they both share the same first letter) and that in the audio logs from Eggman, he goes over how Gerald’s past must have one point brought him to Angel Island, without the knowledge of Knuckles or any of its inhabitants. It would make sense considering the shrine at the end of SA2 is quite literally built after the shrine on Angel Island, both housing a specific purpose to hone the Master Emerald’s energy

I would disregard so many of the games that you included, but like you said at the beginning, it's pretty much up to the fans to make sense of the sonic timeline so the fact that you did include some games I wouldn't have is fine. A lot of things I would have just explained away as easter eggs or cameo appearances, and thus not really canon to the main lore, even though the game those appearances are in IS canon. I appreciate your dedication to trying to fit them all in though, seems like something I would do for other fandoms, but ironically not sonic's lore... I don't know why. Also, wanted to say that 06's plot is criminally underrated. Your summary of it reminded me of how good it was if you ignore the cringe romance between sonic and elise. It's a shame it was such a bad game. And the redesign for Eggman... oof... glad that didn't stick.

What really stands out about Sonic in comparison to other platform game franchises, or even other animated franchises is that it has its own canon. Sure, it has often been confusing and some games have strayed from the canon, but it is impressive that it has had this epic canon that has always kept progressing.

58:35 I don’t think that’s what they were intending, especially when Knuckles should be guarding the Master Emerald. And if they are all on Angel Island, then why is Amy there as well? They just forgot the Tornado 1 was destroyed or they wanted to bring back a classic element for a classic like game. Besides, we see the Tornado 1 many times throughout the series, so I don’t think Sonic Team intended on it being fixed at some point to have it continue in later titles for that classic representation.

I used to be into Sonic as a kid. I lost interest in it due to some of the games having iffy plots with holes in them and a toxic fan base. But now as an adult, I have a new appreciation for the series in that it is the unique product of multiple writers adding lore and iterations to the story. It isn't always cohesive, but there are definitely some interesting sci-fi and even mythological concepts in the series that makes it fun to dissect.

The only thing I think I disagree with placement-wise I think is generations from classic sonics perspective. I think it should go after sonic 2 for the genesis because the sonics had to collect the 7 chaos emeralds during it, and during the time of sonic chaos there was still only 6 emeralds, and more on that classic sonic also went super sonic there, which would imply that he knows what the feeling of going super with the chaos emeralds is already like. So I think that generations should go after sonic 2 on the genesis

If i remember correctly the gaia cycle in unleashed happens every few million years, so since the ancients are described to have arrived 10k years ago I think it‘s more likely that the emeralds were taken from „earth“ after the last gaia cycle and then somehow got to the ancients before they returned them to „earth“.

With the metal sonic problem my headcanon is that eggman had ALOT more time to make metal sonic because he made him in the past so had many many years to perfect him eggman then lost the building instructions for metal so had to rush making silver sonic and robo sonic(the one in sonic 2) while having mecha sonic being made in the background. But this time eggman decided to focus on strength. When macha sonic was defeated he ordered some eggrobos to look for metals build instructions and the started rebuilding him. That is why you can see him in final eggs hub world. As for the other sonic robot in final egg. I think that that was meant to be a combination of mecha and robo sonic but that one got destroyed somehow. Then eggman managed to finish metal for sonic heroes

That feels kinda similar to how I see it, at least with Silver Sonic being rushed. I see it as after CD and Metal Sonic, Eggman tried to make another one some time before or during Sonic 2, but he wasn’t able to finish it before Sonic got to the Death Egg so had to send Silver Sonic out and either hope for the best or hope it would do enough damage to Sonic so he could finish Sonic off, and Mecha Sonic seemingly being the final version until Metal made sure he has that title in Heroes

Personally, I believe the Master System version of Sonic 1 is canon in a way, as Sonic 1 SMS would have to take place at the same time as the Genesis versions.

Same here. The real events of "Sonic 1" are IMO a mix of the Genesis version and the MS/GG version. Sonic goes through all the zones of both Sonic 1s, defeats Egg Crusher in Scrap Brain 4/Final Zone, Eggman runs away to Aerobase and Sonic finishes him off there. It's not like there's any actual story that could make such a "game fusion" problematic.

Shadow being confused for Sonic doesn't make sense from an audience perspective. Sonic from an in-universe perspective was seen transforming with the Chaos Emeralds in the previous game and is known to run super fast. A black hedgehog was seen stealing a Chaos Emerald, while running super fast. It only makes sense to consider Sonic a suspect since he has been seen changing his form before and fits the description. It'd be like if the police just decided not to suspect Spider-Man if Venom broke and entered somewhere to steal something. They don't know what we know. Lol.
