The squeak is the 'sprag' or one-way clutch that grabs to turn the crankshaft using the starter motor, but slips otherwise(over-runs). It likely needs to be cleaned and oiled. It is right above and forward of the flywheel where you adjusted the spark timing. Be sure to sync the throttle plates so they both start to open at the same time for best and most even performance. When you get them right, it will feel a LOT smoother. Bought mine new in 1970, so have a bit of experience. tom

That squawk sound reminded me of the bearings in the oneway pullstart spinner that squalls when a Briggs & Stratton starts up cause the ball bearings are dirty and dry and won't flee the grooves once centrifugal force tries to clear them from the sprag but it doesn't.
@GrumpyUnkMillions
@GrumpyUnkMillions 2 жыл бұрын
@@moosehand8721 Yes it does. My memory is not exact on the sprag clutch, but I think it is on the crankshaft, otherwise, the chain from starter sprocket to the crankshaft would be turning the whole time the engine is running. There is a bit of oil in that case, but not much, so the lackj could very well make it squeaky.

@@vidguy007 that's awesome man. I used to take bike ride trip on my bike starting anywhere from 200 to 800 miles one way in t-shirt , shorts , & flip flops. I used to get some weird looks on the interstate cuz seeing a chubby fat dude on a bike & wearing flip flops too it's something you just don't see. I have to ride my bike with flip flops because i have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrew shoes , socks , & boots 30 years ago & flip flops is the only footwear that will barely and I mean barely fit on my foot because of my toes being straight across & wider than the flip flop straps. That's a truly disturbing amount of metal in the oil. Either something failed, was fixed and the mess wasn't cleaned out or something is about to fail big time. If it were mine I'd strip the engine. If a bike seizes going down the road, it tends to get ugly...

@@Sleeperdude Since the valves weren't adjusted one can assume the timing chain tensioner was probably not adjusted either. That timing chain will wobble in between the heads and chew a hole in the path of the chain if the tensioner is not released occasionally. It's probably fine now that it's been done, but another complete oil change with Honda oil would be good in 50/100 miles. I've found Honda clutches tend to start slipping if Honda oil isn't used. Thanks for the video!

So, when you were trying to start that bike it made that weird squeally sound as the engine came to rest. That is where the metal fragments are coming from. It has separate engine and gearbox oil, I imagine, so the answer is in the engine. It looked liked aluminium, (hey, I'm from England). Did you try a magnet on it? I'm thinking oil pump. Anyhoo, just discovered your channel, like you, your family and even the goats... Rule of thumb... If it ain't safe for Ralphy it ain't safe for you. Jappy New Year to you all. I worked on those for years . (1) the carbs just can't be right, need a good cleanup and throttle plates sync (visual is good enough). Also make sure both diaphragms work fine by blowing air though the bores. (2) the mechanical noise isn't from the valves (if set at .002" int, / .003" exh. and there's no wear to the cam lobes/rocker arms. Rather from a loose cam chain --adjuster is behind the cylinder block : put any cyl. at TDC (plus a few degrees), loosen the adjuster nut +bolt, it should reset the spring-tensioner. Tighten. (3) Points static timing is ok, as long as you first adjust the points gaps (.012'"-.016"), THEN the timing itself ( left cyl. by rotating the bigger points backplate ; right cyl. points have their own 'sliding' smaller backplate , bolted to the main one (this way both points can be adjusted independantly). (4) there are normally 2 screen filters in the fuel valve assy : a tube-type and a round one , both accessible upon disassembly. I'd add some more inline ones as your tank can't be trusted to deliver clean gas. I loved those bikes much better than the modern ugly/ complicated ones. Yours doesn't smoke, should be good for a while ! Sadly, looks like internal parts are mostly NLA.. How comes you know how to adjust these 'excentric' rockers !!!. I thought only Honda retired engineers knew about them haha.

The 01-05 (Yamaha loved to use dual carbs) Raptor 660R had twin 33mm carbs. Easy as heck to work on tho,, I was 12 when I put a stage 3 Hot Cam and valve springs in it with a jet kit. Talk about torque!? 5th gear cruisin any RPM and just blip the throttle and the front tires instantly pull off the ground. Also,, the coil n wire n spark plug top.... screw on the top on the plug, grab any MSD blaster coil and make your own plug wire from any of the good brands (MSD, Taylor, etc) and then wire in the MSD coil. Now you get more efficient spark, better spark, fuel eco, power and you can use a regular spark plug. Did this on my Raptor as well and even the idle improved on pump gas.

There are pretty cool old bikes, kind of like a over sized mini bike that is heavy. I also had a 750 which was fun from this time period. I think it was just paint inside the tank, most coatings are not rough and and lumpy. Your little man is starting to like working on these things, these are the days you will remember most. I rise my RC cola to you sir!

I only helped to re do an inner tank treatment once. It was first a cleaner then a coating. I didn't think it stuck well and looked like it was peeling. However that bike lasted a few years on that coating with no issues. Not sure but that inner tank treatment was tricky... You fellas did a great job.

That's a great score these days since so many rider's dig that whole scrambler look. Sure happy she ticked over and fired after a little TLC. Shame that someone had to torque up the one jet so bad. It really should be replaced when at all possible. The missing side cover will be costly especially if the medallion in on there. Looking $60 or more at least. The petcock does have a plastic screen that slides over the longer tube, along with one in sediment bowl under the valve. Lube the cables, check the brakes and other than seeing how old those tires are (more than 5 yrs) just go and swap them out. That's same year and color as my CB-350. Really awesome motorcycles. Have a very happy New Year.

I've never seen Ralphie have as much fun as he was shaking that fuel tank. I had a CL450 once, the most miserable bike to get started. Then I moved to a Suzuki RE5 wankel bike - expensive, slow, ugly, what's not to like? - and then a Suzuki GS1000 which I loved.

Couple things that may be helpful, they did make a CB350f which is a 4 cylinder from 72 to 74. Usually the carbs come off together so you can bench sync them. To get that crap use acetone to get the old sealer out then reseal it. I would use red kote, usually works good. Thanks for the great video, cool your son is learning how to fix stuff with you!
