@Skoora8 ай бұрын
Always bugs me on demo’s of this kind of circuit where they just crank it but don’t adjust the EQ ie. Kill the bass, get the treble and presence up and then talk about the flubbiness or it sounds like a muddy mess and they proclaim how “awesome” it sounds. 😂

Honestly, for the price, Marshall is a great value to sound like Marshall! €720 (excl. VAT) for the ST20H makes it very hard to justify getting something else. €1520 (excl. VAT) for the Little Sister is just.. bonkers. Yeah, it has more features and is handwired but I just don't care about that. Some argue that PCB is superior anyway. And a lot of people already have attenuators/loadboxes anyway so having a MV doesn't really matter for many.

I've tried the Studio JTM, Friedman Little Sister, Dirty Shirley Mini, and Friedman Pink Taco 20 (first version). The Studio JTM cleans were good, great crunch sounds, but the drive sounds weren't the best, reminded me a little of a Fender Hot Rod. The Little Sister and Dirty Shirley Mini to my ears was like the JTM high treble channel with great sounding drive. If you want dark cleans from the Little Sister or Dirty Shirley Mini, forget it - too bright. With the Pink Taco, turn up the bass, turn down the treble and mids, turn down the gain and guitar volume, turn up the master volume and there it is - wonderful dark cleans. The drive sounds are what you expect of a Friedman - amazing. The Pink Taco 20 is now the amp I own, it does bright and dark cleans, it does crunch, it does rock, it does metal. Great amp. I've never tried Pink Taco V2 but I've read it's brighter than version 1 which is a shame as I think the original had the right balance, at least for my tastes. The big advantage with Friedman is they have an excellent master volume control so no attenuation required.

Excellent run-thru and comparison. A lot of it comes down to personal opinion...so here's mine. The Friedman had the typical upper-midrange spike that I don't care for. The Victory, although very clear sounding, was also a little harsh for me. The JTM Studio surprised the heck out of me and sounded very similar to its big brother in many ways, but with a little more brightness and a little less girth. The Royalist is just a great amp, sounding similar to the Marshalls albeit maybe a little bit more refined with a bit more clarity. Add the extra features that you get with the Tone King like the 3 modes and dual Ironman attenuation makes it the winner and for me. By the way, I think the cab with Greenbacks is perfectly appropriate for these amps.

IMO the JTM 45 still does the Marshall thing best of the bunch, even better than the Tone King; it has a bottom end thump the other's just don't have. The JTM 20 is the first to get mushy, that's a disappointment. The Tone King is 2nd best behind the JTM 45, great amp with a lot of features, but missing that bottom end thump of the JTM. The Victory is lacking in bottom end compared to the rest of these amps; makes it easy to avoid getting mushy if you just cut all the bottom end out, add some more low end to it and it would probably get mushy like the JTM 20. The Friedman is nice, nicer than the JTM 20, but there's a cost to it. Overall, the JTM 45 still reigns king, IMO of course, YMMV. BTW, now way the Friedman is 20 watts, you cannot get 20 watts out of a pair of EL84's, it's probably 15 - 18 watts max. Same thing with the Victory, you cannot get 25 watts out of a pair of EL86's, it's probably very close to the Friedman, you can maybe get a couple of watts more but that's it, not really enough to be audible. Anyway, good video, love Pete's playing! What a great resource to have there for these videos.

Amps are an odd market- we buy the real deal to experience "moving air"- then turn right around and pay hundreds of dollars for an attenuator to make it strop doing that. The UAFX Lion 68 sounds so good- I honestly think it sounds better than the latest Marshal studio amp release. Thats's not what it's supposed to emulate- it's supposed to emulate the old Plexi sound- and it does, but I heard it A/B'ed against the little studio amp, and I liked the pedal better. Actually, the point was to choose which was the real amp- and I chose the pedal. And I did so with all the confidence in the world- they played them, and I instantly was like "Oh, I got this- it's easy."- and then got it wrong. And before you start- I'm in my 50s and grew up playing valve amps, I've owned 2 Plexis, a JTM 45, and several Fender tube amps over the years. I knew eventually they would get it right but- I honestly didn't think it would be this soon. I figured we had a few more years of these almost right pedals before we got to the real thing- but UAFX is ahead of the game apparently. I haven't had a chance yet to see how it responds to pedals, but if it handles that well, I really don't see why anyone would buy any of these amps any longer. Even if you think the Lion isn't quite there yet- give it 6 months- there will be something even better.
