Yep, I’m really grateful to bladecentered for pointing that out. It’s not something I usually try with my backlocks because it doesn’t work that great with most of them but the Siren closes so slick like that and it totally increases the fidget factor!! Mine flicks open ok with the thumb but it rockets out with a mid finger Spydie flick. I was always stronger with that than with the thumb though.

The blade shape with that mild drop and that prominent guard reminded me of the SOG Flash II. Great review. And I personally like basic, no thrill designs like this, it makes them timeless. Edit: I definitely commented before watching till the end. Thank you for sharing the story of Nick with us.

Spyderco lockback usually have a dead spot or choil, so when you press on the lock you can let the blade fall and the dead spot or choil will hit against you finger. That’s usually how I close spyderco lock backs. This does not seem to have that.

I just got mine today, and can confirm that it DOES allow for that method of closure. As long as you have your index finger ALL the way forward behind the guard, there is just enough of a dead spot. It's a great knife.

This appeals to me more than any new Spyderco in a long time. (Z-Cut excluded. Get you one, they're dope.) Every aspect seems tailored to the task at hand. I'm almost always inland and I have other knives to do the job just fine, but whatever's on kayak knife duty is wet pretty much all summer, so if I was closer to salt, this would be high on my list. I'm sorry for your loss. Thanks for telling the story. Mrs. JT sounds like a keeper.

I'm happy to hear you're gonna keep it for the reasons you discussed. You can look at it and remember that conversation you had. I was considering this model or the Native Chief to change it up. The DLT/Manix 2 exclusive got my money, sucker for that model per our previous back and forth. That blade is definitely on the radar, thanks for putting it on the table for us! 👍👌

I absolutely love this knife! From every point. If you really dissect it, it’s perfect and makes more sense in hand if your an outdoorsman/fisherman, as I am ( still good for EDC, IMO ). I wasn’t sure if a lock-back for this but damn, it’s what it needed. Great design, Lance!

Sorry to hear about your friend Nick. Hold on to this knife and keep his memory alive. I'm not a big fan of large folders, but I like a plain and simple design, I love a backlock on a working knife, and I've never handled a Spyderco that didn't have good ergos and a slicey blade. Looks like one I just might need to get!

First time I saw the Siren was a Blade HQ interview with Eric Glesser at Shot Show 2020 and knew I wanted one. I eventually cancelled a pre-order thinking I would wait for a QC second run although no one has had any complaints about it. The first one that comes up I'll get. By the way, I will fidget a lockback.

Get one. My gen-1 is flawless. Far more free-dropping than JT's. Must absolutely make sure your index finger is chocked up near the guard when you release, or you'll get a nice cut.

I bought my 1st sprint run it was the orange native 5 with Rex45. I also bought the maxamet para 3. Not sure if that's a sprint run or not. I swore I wasn't gonna buy them just because of the steels but, I did.... couldn't help it. I will carry and use them both. I don't ever sell any of my stuff. Thanks for the content JT. Great Spydercos right there, can't say a bad thing about them. The Maxamet isn't a sprint but it's so sporadic with availability that it can be just as hard to come by. Excellent ones for your collection!

The story is so awesome. Your wife is very special to have gotten that for you. That should stay in your collection forever. A memory of a friend and a present from your wife while pregnant. Knife seems very nice. Wish it had a compression lock as I can never Spydie flip their lockbacks. Use and enjoy it. .

After a couple weeks of carrying and using it exclusively, I’ve really enjoyed it. There are a couple things I’ll be changing. The lock bar definitely needs a Boye Dent, the lock releases slightly when I grip it hard. Secondly, I can’t stand the pointy pommel so I’ll be rounding if not flattening it.

I like the Caribbean too, but I don't think it is a longer knife. Like you said though, maybe larger overall with other dimensions in mind. I don't know much about nick, so I couldn't say if he would like this one or not.
