I'm not american and this got me concerned because of the natives from my country are loosing their lands, being called out "land invaders" and being treated like exotic animals who can't follow globalism because a smartphone or anything close to technology is "too much" for a person who supposedly should live in the middle of a forest like they don't know the rest of the country exists.

My issue with Pocahontas was that if they wanted to make a love story between a native woman and a foreigner then okay! Do that! But DON'T take someone from real life who was abused and add rainbows into the tale. I am not a native. But even I was like "what on earth?"

You do realize that in that case you have to criticize practically every other popular disney movie for the exact same reason? And most of modern fairytales? And also a lot of historical movies/books except documentaries? you hear it everywhere in canada. I'm assuming all these people are from the US so they're treated differently. In canada theyre boarder line royalty. university, healthcare is free. they can travel without a passport, they dont pay tax. They can get free water on the reservations etc. my father is half native and I have never seen any or experienced any of the treatment they're explaining in this video. if anything it is the natives who are more racist towards people of other color, atleast in ontario. move towards Saskatchewan and they're living great.

Micca I’m from Canada too and in Quebec, I was lucky to learn so much information at school. From their history and how they were living before the colonizers, from how it was after the colonizers, to when the colonizers started acting a bit crazy and take all their children to put them in residential school, and all the trauma for generations. I do believe that Canada owes them all these advantages considering that the last residential school only closed in 1996. And it still doesn’t feel enough

@@ohhhthatone3107 they're killing themselves because they refuse help. the media and this video is only showing one side to the story. There is millions of dollars being funded into mental health and safety on the reservations in canada. they choose to stay in the past and live of off welfare and continue the cycle of abuse with in their families. I know this because I've seen it my whole life here In Ontario as I live on the boarder of the reservation. My mother is a teacher at a native private school amd works with children from these toxic environments. They are choosing helplessness. the majority of missing aboriginal women go missing and suffer at the hands of other aboriginal men on the reservation. how can we help that when police aren't even allowed on the reservation? The six nations community is sick from the inside, we are trying to help and they are currently refusing help. its truly sad because the culture is a beautiful thing, but the people need help and dont trust.

I hate to say it, but having darker skin and ethnic features matters with regard to how you're treated. I feel for Blake because I know he really wants to identify with the Native environment that he was brought up in, but unfortunately society takes people at face value and he looks white. Like, completely. Even if he were a little more tan, he still has European features. It's like the white (or even white-passing mixed) kids that grow up in black neighborhoods. They identify with black culture, have black friends/family, etc, but at the end of the day society will treat them based on how they look. They don't go through the exact same things as their darker counterparts.

I suggest to everyone to look at what the Aboriginals face till now. Adam Goodes is a prime example... the white people always have this thing in their head that everyone owes them something for being white... we Arabs kept killing them until they fixed their act with us and became non-violent until we got our independence. So as a Canadian, I can't say an apology has done much. Two of our prime ministers have made public apologies to the indigenous population. I agree more needs to be done. We have a reconciliation commission that has gone to indigenous communities to hear about their pain, but even that is not enough. In the last year and a half, a girl I became friends with only a few years ago has lost two of her cousins. One was murdered and found in a ditch in the middle of nowhere, the other is still missing. I have seen my friend deal with substance abuse and depression. Generational trauma is real and no number of apologies will heal it. Our indigenous communities need secure housing, clean water, a sense of culture and community, and better healthcare and mental health resources as a start

But in my school we only touched very so slightly on native Americans, Chinese, hell if it wasn't for my own curiosity and KZbin I wouldn't even know that white people have also been enslaved and tortured! I feel even now we should know whats happening in the world. The reservations for native alot of people are struggling and in deep poverty infact in America we're the biggest population in poverty. How about the genocides in Africa? And the Muslims in China? But sadly alot of people don't have any idea about these issues or past issues because all the school teaches is about slavery to the blacks and the concentration camps of Nazis. There's so many issues in the world that nobody knows because schools arnt teaching, and news arnt reporting on them.

New Milo Yep. Slavery, a few figures in the Civil Rights movement, and a little sprinkle of the Reconstruction Era. Then, with Indigenous Americans, we learn about genocide, Christopher Columbus (not entirely accurate), and a slight mention of the Trail of Tears and broken treaties. It looks as if both of our histories have been watered down. Black people definitely get mentioned more though. I always found it confusing how history in America literally seemed “black and white”. All of our civil rights struggles and fights for power in the past never coincided with other groups? I took what they gave cause who was I to mess up the lesson plan? 🤷🏽‍♀️ What I’m aware of is that we are treated as a footnote and not within actual progressions of American history. I should not have stopped hearing about your people in elementary as if genocide was the only notable thing that happened. We are Americans and deserve to hear about our history.

For example, hunting, fishing, camping are not allowed in each others land. I feel until all tribes become one this unfair treatment will continue to persist. Sharing resources amongst different tribes is the only way to begin to overcome problems.

Video Idea: “Do all mixed-race individuals think the same?” Edit: To clarify and explain, I've watched all the videos like "Do all white people think the same about race?", "Do all Black people think the same?", "Do all Asian Americans think the same?", etc. (spoiler: they don't) but I've always been curious about the people who could identify with more than one of these videos. I, myself, am half Asian American/half white and I know that has shaped my view of the world. I'd be curious to see how other variables like parenting and the environment in which we were raised has also affected that perspective.

I’m really struggling to understand their opinions on the “savages” song, the perspective it’s sung from is supposed to be seen as disgusting, if we had a song sung from the perspective of Nazis we’d find their glorification of race hygiene disgusting as well...

I can't speak for them but the movie is marketed towards children. Kids may not have the ability to pick up on nuance and that perspective so it causes Native kids to experience an otherness and also gives non-Native young kids fuel to tease Native kids and see them as less which is all internalized.

I mean they obviously are welcome to have those opinions as they are the ones who have to live with it on a daily basis. I'm not question or judge them for finding it hurtful. I know that I personally dont see the song as saying "Native People aren't even human"...its just that a)legitmately that was the history and I dont think we should necessarily hide history or pretend it was something different, but I always liked the song was sung by the Natives as well. They're also calling the white people savages.

Antoinette O. In your opinion, what qualifies someone as “native” to you? In many indigenous nations, whether or not you are “native” very heavily involves your relationship with indigenous communities. Throughout colonial history, indigenous people would adopt people of all races into their nations. There are many historical records of people abandoning the children of unmarried women in the woods and indigenous people would take them in and raise them with their own children. Throughout North America’s slave history, slaves that escaped would be welcomed in and adopted into nations. You should do some research into “black indigenous” people. When freed American slaves were shipped to the east coast of Canada, they lived along side the indigenous people and many mixed race children were born from black/indigenous relationships. So again, to you, how do you determine who is actually indigenous and who isn’t?
@oliviasturgeon7256

Jarol Rivera indigenous DNA, especially from home test kits, has very little to do with indigenous identity. Your DNA results depend 100% on the sample size of the groups, and many indigenous nations and their elders have warned their citizens not to give samples over to these companies. Any even if you have very little indigenous DNA, your identity largely depends on your relationship to your community. All of the British children of unwed mothers who were abdondoned and raised by indigenous people - they may be 100% British, but they might be considered more indigenous than someone who is 100% Mikmaq but was never raised in the community.

This is the most authentic conversation I've seen about Native Americans. It's not a pity party, it's a conversation between people of different nations that have a similar view point. That's what the general public fails to do, we're not the same. I hope non native people can gleem some useful information out of this.
