I suggest to everyone to look at what the Aboriginals face till now. Adam Goodes is a prime example... the white people always have this thing in their head that everyone owes them something for being white... we Arabs kept killing them until they fixed their act with us and became non-violent until we got our independence. @13:30 Blake really needs to come to terms with how being white-passing is impacting his life and thoughts. Saying that you actively stay out of the sun so you "don't get too dark" is exactly what they are saying when they call you out for not having an understanding of your privilege. Just the fact he can and is staying out of the sun, shows that he wants to pass as white and recognizes that he is getting privileges for passing that he doesn't want to lose.

So as a Canadian, I can't say an apology has done much. Two of our prime ministers have made public apologies to the indigenous population. I agree more needs to be done. We have a reconciliation commission that has gone to indigenous communities to hear about their pain, but even that is not enough. In the last year and a half, a girl I became friends with only a few years ago has lost two of her cousins. One was murdered and found in a ditch in the middle of nowhere, the other is still missing. Then, with Indigenous Americans, we learn about genocide, Christopher Columbus (not entirely accurate), and a slight mention of the Trail of Tears and broken treaties. It looks as if both of our histories have been watered down. Black people definitely get mentioned more though. I always found it confusing how history in America literally seemed “black and white”. All of our civil rights struggles and fights for power in the past never coincided with other groups? I took what they gave cause who was I to mess up the lesson plan? 🤷🏽♀️ What I’m aware of is that we are treated as a footnote and not within actual progressions of American history. I’m half Native American. I’ve experienced discrimination from other Full Blooded Indians. I realized the horrifying treatment Native Americans experienced. After talking with other Native American tribes, I wander why Native Americans have not united more. Between tribes it seems that if you’re not from this tribe you are not accepted. For example, hunting, fishing, camping are not allowed in each others land. I feel until all tribes become one this unfair treatment will continue to persist. Sharing resources amongst different tribes is the only way to begin to overcome problems.

I can't speak for them but the movie is marketed towards children. Antoinette O. In your opinion, what qualifies someone as “native” to you? In many indigenous nations, whether or not you are “native” very heavily involves your relationship with indigenous communities. Throughout colonial history, indigenous people would adopt people of all races into their nations. There are many historical records of people abandoning the children of unmarried women in the woods and indigenous people would take them in and raise them with their own children. Throughout North America’s slave history, slaves that escaped would be welcomed in and adopted into nations. You should do some research into “black indigenous” people. When freed American slaves were shipped to the east coast of Canada, they lived along side the indigenous people and many mixed race children were born from black/indigenous relationships. So again, to you, how do you determine who is actually indigenous and who isn’t?
@oliviasturgeon72565 жыл бұрын
Jarol Rivera indigenous DNA, especially from home test kits, has very little to do with indigenous identity. Your DNA results depend 100% on the sample size of the groups, and many indigenous nations and their elders have warned their citizens not to give samples over to these companies. Any even if you have very little indigenous DNA, your identity largely depends on your relationship to your community. All of the British children of unwed mothers who were abdondoned and raised by indigenous people - they may be 100% British, but they might be considered more indigenous than someone who is 100% Mikmaq but was never raised in the community.
