And hard work is hard work. But the outcome of hard work is often very different depending on where your starting line is. If a homeless person works very hard they will end up much better off than they would have otherwise and that is true but it is almost a guarantee that someone who is rich that works EQUALLY as hard will climb much much higher because of their access to different opportunities. The fact that opal is premed is scary to me. He completely lacks empathy. He tries to generalize his experience to everybody. Opal states that SAT scores are well correlated with GPA within the same school. This is a fair and logical point considering that (regardless of the school) your GPA is the consequence of your effort and access. Perhaps your GPA is not an indicator of how capable you are generally, but it is certainly an indicator to how well you’d perform comparably to other students within the same school.

As someone who is ND, with ADHD and in the tism spectrum, Opal reminds me of certain things in myself. The extreme straightforwardness, some inability to think abstracty (hard work is hard work). I asked the same thing when he asked Emily why she hesitated switching, if I got a 1600 score, I wouldn't have hesitated to switch as to me that is fact, why would I act as if I didn't, or hesitate? People say he is arrogant, he might be, but it reminds me way more of how my tism works, when something is a fact it is a fact and that makes it unmovable, and when you don't catch social queues (and forget to mask and act bashful about things that simply are) it comes across as arrogance.

There is so much misinformation floating around about what these disorders really are, and it is getting so skewed that people are claiming it is not a disability, or a disorder. People who actually have these diagnosis don't like to see what they struggle with being adopted as a group of fun and unique personality traits. There are people suffering with these disorders and seeing them minimized makes us feel like garbage, and worry about being excluded and marginalized once again. Yes the tism meant to be light hearted, thut thrown around to describe yourself is very cringe. To parade these disorders around like it is who you are is harmful for us who have no choice because it will always be a part of us. I have to disagree I think that the SAT and ACT are both important tests that should be mandatory, my reasoning behind why is that it is something universal meaning there shouldn't be any bias there, unlike with schools GPAs differ greatly depending on what school you go to and even what classes you take within the same school so, in my opinion, standardized tests are a great indicator of how well you are going to do, generally speaking (you are an exception to this obviously). I do agree that they should be made shorter or maybe even just split to where you take each section on a different day, but the problem is that with a person's GPA there are just way too many unknown variables at play, especially for international students where schools have different rules.

Probably just because they took a whole bunch of AP courses + the shown GPA being weighted. Ultimately, GPA is in no way a viable means of ranking someone. Nobody has the same situation. I don't understand why people are hating on opal, I find him extremely well spoken confident and know what to do type of person whom I will always respect on the other hand I can't take on people who just want to please others. People talking about emotional intelligence here when they only want people to like them no matter how annoying they are and i am sorry that's just a lie

I'm a college student in Engineering who got a 1220 on my SAT, took 13 AP classes and ended up with a weighted GPA of 4.0 . I'm horrible at tests and I don't think they define my intelligence. I'm about to graduate college and already have a really nice job ready for me when I graduate. Don't let standardized tests determine whether or not you believe you're smart.

Standardized tests can be great for smart students that go to to schools with limited funding, such students may not have the opportunity to do resume building extracurriculars, therefore the test may be one of the only things they can do to differentiate themselves.

My school didn’t have AP or IB classes and I enrolled there when I was a junior, so by the time all my transfer paperwork was finished, I only was able to take 2 college classes (which also raise your GPA), but they weren’t on my transcripts when I applied. I applied with a 4.0 and a 990 SAT (I was always behind in math so I basically failed that section) and got into Berkeley. I’m personally not a believer in standardized testing.

@Merican Modi No, I was just always behind in math so I really just guessed on everything in that section. I also didn't have the time and financial resources to study for the SAT, but looking back on it, I wish I used free resources like Khan academy more to improve my English score. I was accepted into 2 top ten public universities though and just graduated from one in June, so I'm doing fine haha :)

@Merican Modi Do you even know what any math beyond arithmetic is? It seems that your thinking is quite limited.
