For more information on Birobidzhan, I would recommend Stalin's Forgotten Zion by Robert Weinberg & Where the Jews Aren't by Masha Gessen. It is interesting that the main focus of efforts to stamp out the religious aspects of Judaism in the Soviet Union was in the European parts, resulting in many Russian Jews from Belarus, Ukraine & Russia west of the Urals having little or no formal Jewish religious education. In contrast, most Bukharan Jews were generally left free to practice their faith as a result of Soviet policy towards the majority Muslim populations of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan where they were largely located. Since the Soviets took a more hands-off approach toward the Muslim populations with respect to religious practices, the Bukharan Jews were also relatively left alone. I've seen this personally, with most observant Jews from the former USSR I've encountered at my synagogue being from these regions, while the Jews from the European parts of the USSR being generally less observant.

My great-grandfather grew up Jewish in Smolensk in the late 1800s/early 1900s. There was actually a Jewish population there despite being outside of the Pale - with about 5k-6k around 1900. There were established Jewish cemeteries and synagogues. I hear so often that there couldn't be Jews in Smolensk because it wasn't in the Pale. The problem with accounts of Jews in Russia is that they generally are talking about those in Orthodox communities. I've had multiple people in Jewish Genealogy groups tell me my great-grandfather wasn't really Jewish even if he claimed to be Jewish because those outside the Pale didn't follow enough Jewish traditions to be Jewish. It's very frustrating and it does ignore what life was like for those who didn't live in shtetls and little research has been done - and the destruction of records by the Soviets hasn't helped. But the type of Judaism my great-grandfather practiced outside of the Pale before 1918 was far more of cultural Judaism than Orthodox and that could have paved the way for way the Soviets allowing Jewish culture.

This helps to explain why Hitler thought bolshevism and judaism were interconnected and why the idea gained such popularity. To many anti-semites it probably looked like USSR was favoring jews and/or thahmt they were controlling the whole union and the communist movement. I didn't really know about how the soviet jews were doing before Stalin's reign.

It was only an alliance for the Bolshevik to take power. After they were no longer needed, the same story repeated itself which convinced them that they needed their own nation state to survive. A large part of it is seeing what they wanted to see, ignoring the other groups exiled to the Russian hinterlands, that it WAS the hinterlands and pretty crummy terrain to make a living from whatever the hopes and aspirations were, and that whatever favor they were granted was rescinded as Stalin consolidated power.

Hitler thought Communism and Jews were interconnected long before the Soviet Union, though. It's a somewhat "logical" consequence of his world view in general, and reality was very much not important. The Soviet policy regarding Jews was not fundamentally different from their policies towards other nationalities, and Hitler didn't particularly concern himself with those.

@@varana Wouldn't aims of communism be appealing to regular Jews? Communism was supposed to end Nationalist states, which were oppressing Jews in Europe for centuries, and create class based society where all people of same class would be equal, no matter their nationality. Albeit at cost of religion itself, which is a much more important for regular Jew than Christianity for French or German. okay I love your work absolutely love your work but I need to tell you something. it's kind of annoying but it's not a really big deal but I think you should know this at least for future reference, a lot of the Hebrew and Yiddish words with a CH in them are not pronounced like the English ch. they're mainly pronounced more like the Spanish j. have you ever heard a Spanish speaker say the name Juan (or John) or the word jugar (or to play) in Spanish? the j is a little guttural, like coming from the throat cheder, the way you pronounced it sounds like cheddar 🧀. A lot of English speakers just skip the J and just 'uan' or they say 'huan'. that is not right it would be worse to say 'chuan'. so the Hebrew letter ח is represented in Hebrew like it's a CH should but it would be better as an H or a Spanish J. chabbad is pronounced Habbad or (Spanish J) Jabbad

The Pale in Ireland was the region surrounding Dublin (Pale is from Palisade, a wooden set of fortifications intended to keep Irish clans out). There is a townland in rural county Dublin called "Westpalstown". Beyond the Pale meant, beyond (English) law, civilisation and ultimately something unacceptable. The Pale stretched from Carlingford in County Louth to Castledermot in Co. Kildare to Arklow in Co. Wicklow and was also composed of a string of stone castles. That didn't stop the O'Tooles of Castlekevin, The O'Byrnes, the O'Reillys of Co. Cavan, the O'Farrells of Co. Longford and others to raid the Pale. The citizens of Dublin paid 'Black Rent' to the clans to pay them off.

If so, what's your analysis of the portrayal of the soviets in that series? more specific, season 1 episode 26: "Errand of Mercy" as it seems to apply to the current situation in Ukraine. if you're apt to dismiss star trek as a joke, i will advise against that: Right at the beginning, kirk mentions armenia. At the same time, i do find star trek and kirk's over-acting totally comical in so many ways, but it did often address '66-'69 era concerns. Good video overall. As a Patreon supporter of this channel, it is very disappointing that there was ZERO mention here of the courage of Soviet Jews who served in the Soviet armed forces in World War II. Even a brief mention could have been made here in a few seconds when the video got to World War II. 500,000 Soviet Jews served in the Soviet armed forces from 1941 to 1945. 200,000 were killed in battle. 160,000 were decorated for bravery in the field. This includes over 100 Jewish soldiers who were awarded the highest and very rarely awarded decoration, Hero of the Soviet Union. Jewish scientists made key contributions to Soviet weapons development during the war. There were a number of successful Jewish generals during the war. Possibly as high as 100, maybe as high as 300 per one source. And large numbers of Jewish colonels, majors, etc. A few quick mentions. There were many more: Lev Dovator - A Jewish cavalry commander, who was killed in action, who is honorably mentioned in Marshal Zhukov's memoirs Jakov Kreizer - Commanded a mechanized division that stopped a number of panzer divisions in 1941. He went on to command the 51st army and was a member of the Jewish anti-fascist committee. Simon Krivoshein - A leading tank officer who helped reorganize and retrain the Soviet tank forces. His changes helped contribute to the successes of Soviet tank forces at the battle of Kursk in 1943. Marshal Zhukov gave him the honor of leading his corps in the final attack on Berlin in 1945. Israel Beskin - A leading general of artillery forces. David Dragunsky - Commanded a Soviet tank brigade. After the war he was a mouthpiece for the Soviet government claiming the USSR treated Jews well which was a lie. Maxim Vovsi - Chief medical officer of the Red Army during World War II. Boris Vannikov - Engineering officer who made great contributions to industrial mobilization and resource management during the war. Senior Jewish officers were essentially pushed out of the Soviet armed forces after 1945.

Interesting video, but you left out a lot, particularly the prominent role Jews played in the Bolshevik movement after the split with the Mensheviks. Another topic that is rather pertinent to recent times was the animosity between Orthodox Christian Ukrainians and Ukrainian Jews: the former blamed the latter for the Holodomor, so much so that the SS was able to raise two full Waffen SS Divisions from Ukraine and many of the Einsatzgruppen that perpetrated the massacres on the Eastern Front was composed mainly of Ukrainians. The recent Netflix show, The Devil Next Door (about John Demjanjuk, allegedly Ivan The Terrible, a guard at Treblinka) highlights the USSR's attempts to stir animosity between emigré Jewish and Orthodox Ukrainians. It's part of the reason why the Azoc battalion and other Ukrainian formations today have adopted the Wolfsangel and other Nazi imagery. Of course, it's not true that a majority of Ukrainian Jews were ardent Communists or supportive of the Holodomor, and many were themselves victims of it, but this probably should have been addressed and contextualised.

The Ukrainian Nazis, pretty much the forefathers of modern ones, were based, much like modern ones, in Galitzia and Volhynia, and, like modern ones, probably did not like the Russian Orthodox Church much, but rather wanted to make an ersatz Ukrainian "orthodox" one (of Catholic obedience). The Banderistas were scum, worse even than the German Nazis, and still are, but now they are presented as "democrats" and "freedom fighters" by Western propaganda. Holodomor never happened: it was an accidental famine by excessive zeal in collectivization. It had zero genocidal intent.

That's because modern (and medieval) Jews stem from Hellenistic/Roman era converts, not from the original Hebrews/Canaanites of Palestine. The real descendants of the ancient Jews are, quite ironically, modern Palestinians. This is demonstrated by population genetics. Western (Euro-Mediterranean) Jews seem to stem from Cyprus (almost identical genetics) or maybe Asia Minor (not too different), Yemeni Jews are just Yemenis from pre-Muslim times (Yemen used to be a Jewish kingdom before Mohamed conquered it) and Beta Israel (Black Jews from Eritrea and Ethiopia) derive from the once Jewish (later Christian) Kingdom of Axum and are again descendants of converted locals. Even talking of modern Talmudic Judaism as if it was the only Jewish sect out there is totally naive: Christianity and Islam are also Jewish sects (but more open to conversion). Talmudic Judaism (what we now usually call "Judaism") was actually created in the late Antiquity and early Middle Ages, when the Talmud was written (it's surely derived from ancient Phariseanism but that was only one among many ancient Jewish sects), the Christian New Testament is older than the Talmud, so it can be said that Christianity is an even older form of (rather innovative but still very much traditionalist) Judaism than Talmudism. Islam in turn is a Christian (monophysite, non-trinitarian) sect with strong Arab flavor and (as non-trinitarian and also recovering many Jewish or Egypto-Levantine traditions like not eating pork, emphasizing Abraham/Ibrahim, circumcision, strict monotheism of El/Allah, etc.) can be said of being "re-Judaizing". Judaism is much much bigger than just "Judaism" (Talmudism).

In the Soviet Union, almost all Buddhists were Mongols, and the Soviets bullied them and banned them from celebrating the White Moon Festival (because Soviets thought it was a Buddhist Festival) until the 1990s. Now, there are two Mongolian Autonomous states in Russia (kalmet, Buryat). Russia will express his blessings to Buddhists on the White Moon Festival. Unfortunately, the White Moon Festival is not a Buddhist festival😓😓😓. About 2000 years ago, the Mongolian ancestors Xiongnu(匈奴) would celebrate in January(岁正月,诸小长会单于于庭祠《史记》匈奴俗,岁有三龙祠,常以正月……祭天神《后汉书》). I think this is the origin of the White Moon Festival, but the Mongols did not believe in Buddhism 2000 years ago

1st mistake, the so called Jewish autonomous zone was started under Stalin. 2nd, the Soviets considering Hebrew a supposed non-working class language, but Yiddish being working class, is so laughable. It should have been pointed out that Yiddish is written in HEBREW! lol!! 3rd, not only the Whites committed pogroms against Jews during the civil war, but Red armies did as well. The Whites killed more, but the Reds killed quite a lot as well. Finally, speaking of the debasement of the Jewish religion under the Soviets as somehow offset in some way because of the Soviet Jewish secular culture that was allowed to grow instead of it, is in a way giving the Soviets somehow some credit, when in reality, the actions of the Soviets almost destroyed the Jewish religion in the Soviet Union. Very similar to what the ancient Greeks and their Jewish allies tried to do to Judaism in what Judaism commemorates with the holiday of Hanukkah. Communist Gentiles worked in the same fashion, with Jewish Communists to destroy Judaism. The Nazis, like in the story commemorated by another Jewish holiday; Purim, tried to kill all Jews. The Communists tried to destroy Judaism.

Mankind was created in paradise. Adam and his wife are of our parents which means they parents of mankind. They were created in paradise and then later came down on earth. White people came after from a lineage of Prophet Nuh (Noah) and so did all modern day people who are all from lineages of Prophet Nuh Peace be upon him. There is no evolution that humans went through that turned them from Neanderthals to how they are in the modern day. There is no mistake in The Quran but there is many mistakes in the Bible that the Quran mentions correctly such as the position in society of the leader at the time of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) peace be upon him. The Quran mentions he was a king and the Bible mentions he was a pharaoh. The Quran is correct and more recently the Rosetta Stone was decoded and what was found is that leader was a king and not a pharaoh. Islam is The true religion with undeniable proof and evidence. We Muslims believe in Jesus but not as God and we don’t believe God has a son. Jesus peace be upon him is a prophet and Messenger Of Allah (God) and he is the messiah. He wasn’t killed as Allah saved him before they could get to him. There is also scientific and historical miracles mentioned in the Quran such as the formation of the human embryo as well as the creation of honey in bees. There are Islamic prophecies that came true and will come true and I recommend everyone to try and learn about them. I myself know of people who were ill and suffering with issues (including black magic) and got cured miraculously when the Quran was recited over them. I invite everyone to learn about Islam.

This is true in al but one field of study in history today: the history of the USSR. Everything that went wrong in that country was because of one man, Stalin, and if he were to be removed from the history books well... who knows how it would have turned out. Sincerely this sort of aproach to history is all but scientific and is as it might not suprise anyone who has two neurons which connect to each other a re-introduction of the great man of history argumentation to suit the purposes of the economic system reigning in most of the world which was diametrically opposed to USSR's attempts in ending it.

Plus he was "the" expert on the National Question in the Bolshevik party's early days, Lenin awarding him during the Civil war the People's Commissariat of the Nationalities. All this does not mean that these policies can be only attributed to him. @@analizbar not quite, Trotsky is sure better than Stalin by about every point of view, but he still wasn't exactly the perfect fit, he was way too reluctant in seizing power, he failed to conciliate the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks, and also failed to spread his influence enough to be able to fight Stalin. Overall, he'd have been probably better than Stalin, but I'm not too much on board with his theory either, the part that I do not like the most is his economic theory, it's way too anarchic, I believe a planned economy should have a good balance of power between central and peripheral planning in order to both give the citizens of each part of the state a voice, and still have a central authority with a balanced degree of power that keeps cohesion, something in between Marxism-Leninism and Trotskyist and that doesn't lie completely on one side or the other.

I know Lenin was a jew, spoke yiddish, and it was the same with Leon Trotsky he was a jew who spoke yiddish, and apparently in 1919 the Soviets released a list stating their 665 most important and influential leaders, of the 665 almost 400 of them were ethically Jewish.

Lenin was biologically one quarter Jewish from his great grandfather but that's it. He was raised in an ethnically and culturally Christian Russian family and he never spoke a lick of yiddish. And yeah Trotsky was ethnically Jewish but no more than that. He wasn't raised as a jew nor did he write in yiddish or keep kosher or ever even entered a synagogue.

I'm a afraid you painted all in pretty colors - but it wasn't like that. Most Jews in Pale of the settlement were traditional Jews - observant or close to it. The anti-religious pogrom by the Yevseksya not only their religious life and but their existence. The Yevseksya got their punishment in the great purges by death and hard Labour in the gulag (where they met the people they exiled not long ago...). The Birobidjan project was meant to destroy the Zionist idea of returning to Land of Israel and it failed because no land can replace Israel from the harts of Jews. The Bundist tried to do this and helped condemn hundreds of thousands of Jews to death by the Nazi's and Communists by convincing to remain in Europe instead of immigrating to Israel before WWII

@@jamescleary2458 Trotsky recalled that Lenin offered him the post of Minister of Internal Affairs: “... we will make you a People's Commissar of Internal Affairs. You will crush the bourgeoisie and the nobility.” Trotsky, according to him, sharply objected: “I said that, in my opinion, such a trump card should not be given into the hands of enemies; I thought it would be much better if there were not a single Jew in the first revolutionary Soviet government.” Vladimir Ilyich said: “Nonsense. It's all nonsense." Of course, nothing! And, as for the Red Army, in those years the Jews occupied the highest positions. Command - I. Yakir, S. Turovsky / deputy commander of the Kharkov military district /, S. Uritsky / head of intelligence of the Red Army /, A. Shifres / head of the Military Economic Academy /, Y. Fishman / head of the Chemical Department / and others. Political - Y. Gamarnik, L. Aronstam / head of the PU of the Special Red Banner Far Eastern Army /, B. Ippo / head of the Military-Political Academy /, M. Landa / editor of the Red Star /, I, Slavin / head of the department of universities of the Red Army / and others. You can recall the names of G. Indeed, most of these people perished during the Great Terror. Indeed, one of the first arrested, Divisional Commander D. Schmidt, was actually D. Gutman, indeed, out of the eight people convicted together with Tukhachevsky, three were Jews. It is the same with plenty of other minorities. It's just that most people usually mix in after migrating somewhere, which the extremely toxic and persistent Jewish religion prevented. Most of the persecution of Jews was due to its sibling/daughter religions of Christianity and Islam, the three of them being naturally at odds and each as stubborn as the others.

Jews in the USSR suffered unbelievably horribly during WW2. Moscow wasn't captured, but millions of Jews died in Soviet territory. They were also essentially "given up" by Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov. I think most would agree that the genocides committed in Babi Yar and Minsk were much worse for Jewish life and culture than the closure of their Institutes of Yiddish. There were also many pogroms throughout the 20s and 30s in the USSR which was somehow omitted. I think this channel is good but there is a tremondous amount of whitewashing of Soviet history.
