I agree with Angel about Educational Reform. A lot of people complain about not learning certain things in school, but us educators teach based on state standards... sometimes we can add things in like angel’s history teacher did with the eye on the prize doc, but other times we can’t based on who we are teaching, and can potentially lose our job. I genuinely believe the community, and parents have to go against what is test and taught to their kids.

I don't think y'all giving the black film community enough credit. There are plenty of movies for us to watch just for entertainment. And biopics are essential to the black community and those outside the community unaware of black history. No matter what the bases, black or non-black, the fact is historical and/or fact based films always have more buzz around them. Now when people stop making biopics because they're listening to "the people"... what then? Cuz we are VERY far from school reform. There are schools that don't even acknowledge black history month AT ALL!

There were more just for entertainment black movies in the 80s and 90s than now no?
@VChilds13 жыл бұрын
@@joannasaadati8810 I think we got some comedies that are considered classics from those time frames, but I think we have more variety in genres now. They're just spread across more platforms, networks, and media outlets.

I totally agree. These biopics are very essential because black history like the Fred Hampton story isn’t as readily available as I would prefer.

Very very much needed. Until relatively recently, collectively we only learned the Black history all-stars, and in many cases were only taught the white-friendly version. And: we're still fighting different versions of the same struggle - and it's important to know why. Otherwise, we get celebrities with big platforms and no knowledge falling for the okie-doke and spreading their ignorance like toxins.

Though I will agree: there is a bias in how non-Black people overvalue stories of "the struggle" and discount our talent in other genres. I actually think in a previous episode one of y'all talked about the latent racism in comedy, not crediting the genius of our creators b/c "Black people are naturally funny" (which, you'd think means we're better represented in writing rooms, but the way white supremacy do...).

I love what you all had to say about Black cinema being seemingly limited to "struggle" movies. I feel it's the same with Black literature. It's changing, we're getting more sci fi and fantasy, but it still feels like a fad that will pass. We need to feel free to have characters on screen and on the page who are Black but that fact doesn't have to define the story they tell. Part of the problem is...for the longest, if we wanted to be produced and promoted by "the market", our works had to be educational for other races, they need to see the struggle so that they can better and feel like they know something. I even think some of us were trained to think that's how it's supposed to be. Thank you for shining more light on this.

Yeah the Grease cast was pretty old. John Travolta was the closest in age to HS and he was in his early 20s. Stockard was in her 30s.
