This was a lot of fun to watch. I've heard Conan talk about comedy before, he's serious about it and that definitely comes through. My favorite parts, however, are when Conan lets his guard down a little bit and the conversation goes from something you might see on his show to a real conversation between two funny, successful comedy craftsmen. Taking out the audience and live recording creates a real intimate feel. This kind of conversation, in depth and more loose, is a real pleasure.

such an insightful interview. the part about "1/3 is my on life, 1/3 is observations, and 1/3 is making it up" -- very true about art in a lot of places. also, the whole thing about "is comedy a shield/protection as a way to express your feelings?"

24:05 I think i finally sympathize with comedians about their political correctness plight. Before, my answer to comedians who complain about PC culture was always, "Being political INCORRECT is a crutch. Find a smarter way to be funny." But I think I'm beginning to understand that it's not so much about the jokes themselves, but the creative process that needs to be able to say a million terrible things in order to find something we can all laugh about.

I have watched you hosting late night shows since you started. You always made me laugh. I thought it was “intentional” to have a bit that seemed to fail so it would lead into the best “they’re turning on me” dead pan look and comebacks!!!The great J. Carson was great at this also. Such subtle and brilliant comedy. “Uncomfortably smooth”, but relatable to the many others that are tuning in. It’s like real human parody. I believe your individual “perfect style” from the beginning, was very underrated by the “powers that be” at different times, but not by the majority of viewers. You were a breath of fresh air then and now.

Great chill interview with 2 comedy legends. It was fantastic to hear the stories and insights of those who've entertained us for so long, and they both brought up a huge question/fact about how comedy isn't as respected as the "smart" dramas or foreign films. I hope that changes. On a side note, this seemed like great therapy for Conan and Judd. :)

Great interview. I can definitely remember the comedy tsunami of Steve Martin in the late '70's. I remember being furious that my brother got to see The Jerk but I wasn't allowed because I was too young. I also loved This Is 40. It bewilders me that it was slammed by critics. I laughed all the way through it. I could definitely identify with portions of it.

It's interesting how he talks about how Steve Martin influenced him and how it was seen as kind of nerdy back in the day. If you ever watch "Freaks and Geeks" there's an episode where the main character goes on a date with a popular girl, and I think it's "The Jerk" that they see. He's cracking up, and she just thinks it's stupid. His childhood clearly influenced how he wrote.

I think that Conan uses the "Being aware of the formula" and becomes self-aware/meta as a show having sometimes genius jokes/sketches that would only work in that format (Live, guest, audience) and takes advantage of this notion. Sure, its not everyday but it's not easy writing gold for so many shows (And they are always way above average funny at least), but sometimes we get genius and its so worth it. Here, we have another target and format, and as you say so thought-provoking. I enjoy both.
