I find it interesting that people regard church in totally different way than any other area of their life. I'll give a few examples as to what I mean. 1. People hurt your feelings on your job and you don't quit or not show up the next day because someone was mean. 2. We get rejected at the club by women/men and we don't stop going to the club. 3. We don't choose to not go to the hospital because other sick people are there. 4. We stay in far worse romantic relationships than the relationships we have in church. I said this to say that all of these issues that we experience in church are issues that we will experience in every other area of our lives. I am convinced that God allows these challenges in churches to help us grow and mature. If you study the NT churches, they dealt with these same challenges and Christ provided us with guidelines on how to handle conflicts with fellow believers (Matthew 18)

I respect there responses and vantage points have validity from there experiences. I find it weird nobody is said they left church because of the understanding of Gods word wasn’t being correctly preached etc. The church is a body of believers that come to to fellowship, worship, pray, and to hear the word together. Then are commissioned to go out shared the good news to others We often put up with our jobs that have rules regulations etc for a paycheck but when the church has norms to dress with modesty etc then it’s an issue, but our jobs tell us that we go with the flow. I find the church or assembling of the saints gets a bad rep or treating like a step child because people look like I’m not getting paid so I don’t have to be committed

Such a good point. While I respect the concerns and reasons, if people don't understand the truth of the gospel and what Christianity is, you are less likely to be thinking about your preferences and more concerned about what God's standard Is. It's hard to realize that ultimately church is not a club. Its God's idea and should be run completely according to his idea and not ours. Even if it is 'antique'

I agree with you, especially your first paragraph. In my criticism of the church, it's usually (always) about man/woman. I can be quick to kick the entire church institution to the curb because of a handful of PEOPLE. Fortunately God has established a large church body. If I can't or just don't want to fellowship with a particular group, there is probably another just down the street to try on for size. I refuse to paint the entire church with the same brush (service too long, mean ushers, out of touch pastor, hypocritical members, etc...). Most importantly, I'll find one where God's word is taught. His word can and should at times "cut like a two-edged sword." Ref: Heb 4:12. I gotta be sure it's the people and not simply His word that offends me. Ref: II Tim 3:16

@@JayJay-me8zk right I agree with you. Yes some churches have some of those issues, but we encounter the same stuff if not worst at our jobs and we continue to have long suffering and preserve because that check is involved. However when the church does it it’s I’m no longer going to the church anymore. Often the things that burden us the most about our churches we fellowship at God put it on your heart to do the work and help to change that particular area of the ministry. What we have a lot of people on the sideline saying alot but never get in the game. Another sad stat is that that only 30% of the church ⛪️ is involved and doing the work when the 70% do not do anything but sit in the pews or use the church name/affiliation as a badge of honor with no skin in the game. I love when Denis said “you cannot flourish as a human”. This is so true in a lot of cases. Sometimes church culture (not the faith itself), stifles a person’s identity by dictating how that person ought to present themselves. This of course varies across cultures, but sometimes people don’t discover who they truly are (like, interests, values, etc) until after they leave the church

I had moments like this in my journey one thing I found is when you don’t study the scripture for yourself along with the teachings you get and don’t apply them. It will give you that feeling that your not growing in God. Most people in the church can’t tell you what church service is about md what the message was. Sometimes church can be a righteous activity you do on a Sunday or wurst day for Bible study. However it’s so much more than that. You have to diligently seek God through prayer, fasting and reading his word.

Bottom line, most churches are not professionally equipped to counsel hurting people. People go to church to fellowship and that's it. It feels good, people get emotional, cry jump up and down, shout, listen to a quick sermon, but once service is over, most are walking right out those doors back to experiencing their hurts, traumas, relationship issues, marital issues, financial issues, etc... Churches need to create a professional counselors offering/fund instead of some of those other nonsensical funds that are really just another way to collect money and have nothing to do with helping the congregation. That's why people go and get outside help because the church is not helping them navigate real life. Living a sinless life is not all there is to life.

Interesting. My mom is a "Christian counselor" she also has a masters in clinical social work, so she can also provide real counseling. I went to her "Christian counseling" graduation to show support although I am completely against the concept and was mortified by what I heard there. They were actually thumbing their nose at mental health scholarship in favor of some sort of biblical counseling, I didn't expect that at all. I expected them to use scholarship with bible words sprinkled in. I am still terrified that these Christian counselors are out in the public causing irreparable harm to people's lives. I say this to say you bring up something extremely real and there is a need to address it, but the church needs to stay out.

Thank you for this series. I look forward to the next episode. My story is a little different. I never officially "left" the church, I just haven't gone back. There wasn't any abuse, but there was neglect. Five years ago we had a thriving small group based out of a church in a neighboring city, but when a ministry leader came along and said he felt led to start a local church around that small group, it was uprooted and there are literally no remaining members besides my sister's family. They have yet to start any small groups other than for youth and college-aged adults. I am a 32-year-old mother of 2 and felt little to no support from this church since I started having kids. They guilt people into being involved in ministries even when their life circumstances don't allow for it, and when you're not there 3 or more days a week they act like you're a heathen. The straw that broke the camel's back was when my dad passed away in July. He had been faithfully serving at the church for years despite health issues. Because of those issues, he was living with my husband and me since he couldn't take care of a house on his own. So, when he passed suddenly the church made a big show of hosting a memorial service for him. It was very sweet and beautiful. But in the aftermath of losing my dad and having to handle his estate and handle his affairs without the help of my siblings, absolutely no one has contacted me to see how I am doing in the 4 months since. No text, no call, no card. Silence. My sister makes it seem like it's my fault because I hadn't been attending regularly. But no one ever asked why. No one ever made me feel wanted, only that it was some kind of duty to attend and serve sacrificially, even if my husband has been working 60 hours a week and the only quality time we can spend together is on Sunday. No one has ever reached out. That's why I haven't gone back. Even though I crave Biblical teaching and fellowship, I never felt fed or loved or even admonished. Just apathy.

I pray that this helps someone: One of the things that helped me deal with the challenges that arise in the assembly of Believers was to take an honest assessment of whether my attendance, service, ministry, etc., was because of duty or desire. 12:58 Great question. Why should people go to church on Sunday if they are not getting the fellowship that the Bible says is needed for believers? What is the point if they are going to sit in a pew facing forward in a concert-style meeting room or cathedral, hear music, hear preaching and leave? The one thing that is missing from many modern churches is the community, REAL community not "I'm a member of this church" That was good 10, 20, 50 years ago. Today, the community is important.

That's a great point. As a single, church was the loneliest place I've ever been to. Always felt left out, Valentines Day at church is embarrassing, the pastor asking the single ladies to stand up for prayer 😒 then asking the few single men to step up and the congregation laughs at our expense. Church is for families and children. Once you reach a certain age there's no community. I'd participate, go to events but it would have been nice to socialize with people in my demographic. Sad thing is that singles make up a huge part of the congregation but we have no voice. We're asked to serve because we have no spouse or children so we must be free 🙄... We're just silent neglected labor 🤷🏾

I often hear others in my generation talk about "relevancy" but many times (and obviously not everyone) their definition of relevance is determined by the world and secular society; I mean, the Church, as in the Body which is headed by Christ, determines what is relevant by what God reveals to be relevant in scripture through the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit. In addition, the church is not a social club, and sometimes my failure to acknowledge my own sin can consequently blind me from seeing that the same people in the church who have disappointed me because they were not what I needed, wanted, or expected them to be, that they too are also in need of the same Savior that I am. If the church sought to be relevant for everyone according to what each individual decided was relevant to them, the church would in fact be a very progressive, passive, and quite useless social club. What is relevant to every human on earth, is what they decide about Jesus and what they decide about a relationship with Him, because that is in fact the starting place. I don't attend church to be served, but I got to serve. Of course I am not perfect, there have been times that I didn't want to go, or didn't want to serve, but I expect hurt people to hurt others, broken people to break others, whether intentionally or not, and religous folks to unnecessarily and aimlessly judge others while ignring or being ignorant of their own issues; but I still go because my relationship with Christ has and will always be my reason; it has led me to be able to develop my relationship enough "outside of church" that I'm not pressured to stop attending, but rather believe that God can reveal the wisdom needed to work through any issue. I think this series is great, and perhaps doing a "Why did I stay in the church?" series would be interesting too. Because some people choose to stay as well, and not because they're ignorant of the craziness.
@nowfaithis97993 жыл бұрын
Man great insight brother. And that's not a half bad idea about Why did I stay. All or close to all of us have had an experience in church we could speak on. But all the talks and conversations are always about why folks left and after a while they just turn into a bashing session and what everyone else did wrong. But there are a good number of people that went through stuff and stayed in church. Maybe not the same church, but they kept going to worship and fellowship with other saints.

I think that the question is redundant. The reason one would go is because of sin. The reason people go should be is to seek a new life. Plus, the Bible says if any man be in Christ, he's a new creature.....not if any man be in church. Everyone there is in need of help, it does not matter how long they have been there. Was everyone in their churches mad and unsympathetic? I would say no. It it amazing that they will put up with all kinds of attitudes in other venues ( jobs, clubs, etc.), but when it comes to a place where everyone has an opportunity to help and contribute, they have little tolerance. They just don't want to go.... for what ever reason.

The heavy set girl talked in circles. She said no one leaves to sin. Then said some people leave to sin. She said don’t assume people leave to sin but also don’t ask that question. Honestly these people are confused and they keep illustrating their lack of understanding of what church is as opposed to being born again

Jude taught in the last days people would despise church government. The church has never been perfect, just read the New Testament. Many Godly people through out history suffered greatly at the hands of the church. For example, Hudson Talyor's funding was removed by the church. As a results, his infield team died of starvation. What kept these saints was not a perfect church, but a perfect Christ. Change has not occured in the church, but in the attitude of the person's heart towards the church. More importantly, their attitude toward Christ.

@suzanturner3693 жыл бұрын
@@oldschool5 You are correct church government has always been despised. But, not to the degree, as we see today. I have been actively involved in church outreach for years. There has always been a few, but now it is more than the majority that are dissatisfied and have left church. I also, find many church attendees are also unhappy. Rare to meet someone who is not church hopping. Only two of 10 Millennials consider church attendance as important.

Unfortunately leaving the church is not an option. There is no such thing as Lone Ranger Christianity. I know people like to say “I didn’t leave God, I just left the church” but unfortunately God set this up in a manner where our faith is lived out through the church, there is no other way. If you don’t like the church, your only alternative is to gather some other likeminded people and start doing your own thing if you think you can do better, not just stop going. I’m not saying these people aren’t saved, but they are undoubtedly outside of God’s will. They need to belong to some kind of body of believers.

Well I listen to y'all and compare to my experience is a nightmare the pastor cuts me out grab me and my collar call himself and burn some me in front of his it's click in the church but all did he get up Awakening so I can understand why y'all wouldn't go but you need to go to God's house you need to block them people out of your mind put your mind on Jesus and let his Spirit be your God cuz that's exactly what I did but I can tell you today I want to have nothing to do with none of those people from that church God can deal with them but I can do without them

People leave the church for all sorts of reason. but mostly (with regards to the evangelical churches) is that they realise that it's all a scam. Or they want to go bike riding / car racing on the weekends. not sit inside. Jordan

I left the church because I found out none of it was true. Then I suspected that the clergy knew this and decided to lie about it every week from the pulpit. And if they didn't know then they weren't fit to be in their positions.

“Some people aren’t friendly so I just don’t wanna go.” Lol do people think that way about their job? Or their family? That’s a poor spoiled brat mentality.. so if something isn’t bubble gum and rainbows you’re not going? Got it.
@tamarasbeauty10162 жыл бұрын
I just spoke about this on Facebook last week and i COMPLETELY disagree with you. Reason being is yes we encounter issues on our jobs but love is not a requirement on my job nor is anyone on my job professing that they are holy so therefore i go there to get my job done and collect my check I'm not trying to make friends, but many times when people join a church they are being sold on the whole love and holiness deal and then when that is not displayed it puts a sour taste in peoples mouths. At least i know that the people on my job and in the club are a bunch of heathens!!

This just proves church is not for weak spirited people you have to be strong to walk this path period but let me agree with some of what they're saying the church needs to be more aggressive in teaching the word but they can't also allow these young people to bash the church either there are good churches there are bad churches you don't give up because you've experienced bad churches if you want to walk with Christ you keep pursuing the Lord that is your focus it's not the pastor and it's not the church members

@@oldschool5 not true. Josephus was an Israelite and we have plenty of documentation from Jewish historians about the history of Christianity. Christianity is the fulfillment of the messianic prophecy. It wasn’t a new religion. It started first with believing Jews who believed that Jesus was the messiah. The gospel started first in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and then I spread to the rest of the world. Acts11:26 KJ21 and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass that for a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught many people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
