The serial killer nurse Lucy Letby will never be released from prison after a judge sentenced her to a rare whole-life term for the murder of seven babies.
Subscribe to Guardian News on KZbin ► bit.ly/guardian...
Letby, 33, is only the third woman alive to be given the jail term in the UK. She was sentenced at Manchester crown court on Monday. The former neonatal nurse, the worst child serial killer in modern British history, was also convicted of attempting to murder six more babies at the Countess of Chester hospital.

The fact that she’s too cowardly to even show up in court for her own sentence and face the parents of her victims says everything about the type of person she is. She deserves every year she got.

I am not looking to be hostile my friend but the elephant in the room which we need to address if we are to make a start down the road of understanding this kind of evil is to face the fact that she actually ISN'T the face of evil: even on her prison mug-shot she did not look different in kind or demeanour to the girls who lined up for England in the World cup final yesterday morning. Once we come to recognise and acknowledge that evil is as mundane as anything else in life and is as readily packaged in the form of the girl next door as a face like The Joker, we will be better able to identify it and less susceptible to its manifestations in society and assaults on human sensibilities.

This is such a great sentence, she can’t hide her identity or crime as it’s all over the tv and social media so wherever she is sent to the prisoners and guards know her crime. The crystal clear clarity of the sentence is intended is to make any future interpretation that might favour the criminal as difficult as possible. Whatever happens in the next four or five decades of her life, whatever cultural changes, different usages of language, a resurgence of 90s-style "going easy on criminals gets the best results" trend, no-one can re-imagine the core meaning, or what the judge originally intended. You see the same thing in other major trials when the sentence is proclaimed like Dahmer, Bundy, Ridgway or the Janine Balding murderers.

It's unfathomable how someone trusted to care and protect can inflict such harm. My thoughts go out to the affected families; may they find some semblance of justice and peace in this verdict. 🙏 - "Life is a train with no return journey. From a small bed when we were born to a small box when we leave the world, we can take nothing away. What we enjoy is just a process. In this process, nothing can be kept. Therefore, we must learn to overcome troubles and abandon attachments. In this world, we need to be enlightened from the heart, to change ourselves, to see through quickly, and to be enlightened. Many people can't let go of their attachments throughout their lives: "This is mine, that's mine." In the end, there is nothing left. To overcome your own desires, you will not regret tomorrow." - Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door Master Lu

@@baldguy1964No. That's not how it works. There are several high-security psychiatric prison facilities in the UK, and in fact the last killer nurse, Beverley Allitt, was held at one of those (why, I cannot work out for the life of me, because she was examined and certified to not have a psychiatric illness). I was rotated at a medium-security facility during my psychiatry rotation in medical school, and some of the patient prisoners I saw included murderers and paedophiles. Some were deemed to not have had capacity at the time of their crime. Some were deemed to have capacity. The reason they were in the psychiatric facility was for ongoing psychiatric treatment while they served their sentence. But one and all were serving a sentence. You do not get out into society cleared of all wrongdoings just because you are deemed to have been mentally ill while committing your crimes. At least, not in the UK.

I would like to know WHY she chose to do something so heinous like that! Very disturbing. No normal person would consider harming a defenseless baby like that - so what was going on inside of her head to act out like that and commit such a horrendous crime over the length of time that she did it. LIFE imprisonment should mean LIFE imprisonment even if it is a waste of tax money and resources. They should surround her with posters of smiling babies and play an audio of sounds babies make - especially crying when it is her sleep time. I feel for the babies that have been lost (our future and hope) and the parents in mourning. It must be truly devastating and difficult to process and digest.

The key here is that Ms Letby stood up to the consultants who were pointing the finger at her, when they themselves played a huge part in the mess that was CoCH neonatal unit in 2015/16. It has all the hallmarks of a dreadful miscarriage of justice, inflicting pain not only on Lucy Letby but also on the parents of the babies who were led to believe their children were murdered.
