Started his appearance with the Honorable Judge Stevens by verbally abusing his defense attorney and more than likely most of the jail staff. Skip the trial and give him 30 years for the probation violations and then whatever he would get for the remaining cases, to make sure he understands that you don't mess with the staff of a judge give him 180 days for contempt of court to run consecutivly to all the other consecutive charges.

Seems like for defendants like this, they could have an isolated booth or room near the court where they could put them (with guard) where there would be a screen and speakers where they could hear everything in the court during their hearing, and a mic with a mute under control of the judge. They could also have some buttons labeled "YES" and "NO" that would be enabled by the judged and they would be forced to use if they refuse to answer Yes/No questions. The indications from the yes/no buttons would be announced clearly into the record. They could also have a "request to speak" button and maybe even an "object" button that would show an indicator to the judge only, who would then determine when to unmute the defendant when it was their turn to be heard (maybe those would play into the record, but would be single-fire and would play only ONCE until reset by the judge - in fact ALL the buttons could be single-shot until reset to prevent them from using them to spam interrupt proceedings) - and the defendant would also be on camera into the record as well.

Abusive, argumentative, disruptive are contempt issues: I would have found the defendant in contempt, $200 fine and 30 days in jail giving time for another PD to be appointed and to get up to speed...if it were me. If it were me, I would be ready to impose another contempt charge, $300 fine and 60 days the next time it happens after the defendant is warned, ad infinitum as required. And if it were me, if ever the case ever proceeded to sentencing, credit for time served would not be considered or ordered. If it were me ... Additionally, I would warn/advise the PD office to try, if possible, to appoint a PD who is an able self-defender of appropriate size ...
