Back then they had fucking amazing illustrators in vogue; Kieth Parkinson, Larry Elmore, Gerald Brom, Jeff Easley, etc. all continuing the style of Frank Frazetta that paint a really detailed scene - it could vary how well they conveyed the tone of the book, but they were usually attention grabbers. Works much better IMO then then the generic photo-shopped closeups, or vague shadows you see nowadays. Same goes for movie posters.

The wheel of time book cover does actually represent the party as they were described in the Draghkar chase at the beginning of the book. Lan and Moiraine at the front, with Rand riding up close, behind them is Thom and Egwene riding next to each other, though Thom isn't wearing his gleeman's cloak. (Though, did he take that off when they left Emond's Field? I feel like he did, to avoid being spotted...) Behind them is then Matt and Perrin trailing a little. There looks to be two more people even further behind than the last of the party of 7, but on further inspection, that is a plant that is in the foreground, not two small people in the background. So there are enough people, but their physical descriptions in the book do not match the picture. Rand doesn't have fiery hair, Egwene is blonde for some reason, Perrin isn't too big for the horse, Lan has a suit of armor on and, if Thom WAS wearing the cloak, then he doesn't have it on.

100 per cent agree on the Harry Potter original covers. Granted , many of us have nostalgia goggles for the original covers, but even though they’ve created some gorgeous alternate covers for the series, the originals are by far the best at capturing the “vibe” of the book and giving you a sense of what to expect. The original Mistborn covers give me a classic fantasy vibe, for some reason, and I’m a sucker for a retro paperback vibe, even if it’s unintentional.

Fun fact, The Magician's Nephew is actually the first in that series, TLTW&TW is actually book 2 but it's more well-known because of the film. Northern Lights is also the original of his dark materials, but I can understand why some of the "original" covers Daniel shows are original to him, because they are the ones he grew up with :)

What?? The cover art for the Wheel of Time series is why I started reading them in the first place. I love the old school fantasy look more than anything.

I am a huge fan of the more simplistic covers. I have loved fantasy ever since I was a kid and it has never been a problem to pick up a book 500+ pages long. The only thing holding me back from series (that I unsurprisingly love) like the Wheel of Time were the covers. They were, in my opinion, messy paintings of some overgeneralised fantasy setting. I finally bought the Eye of the World because I instantly fell in love with the new UK covers for the Wheel of Time where the spines of the books form the logo of the series and needed them on my bookshelf. Some examples of what I love: - Obviously the WoT covers I just described. - The white covers for the Cosmere. They are amazing and really stand out from the generally dark covers from most books. - Realm of the Elderlings. There are 2 versions with parchment looking covers, but the more recent one with the gold and silver foily look are perhaps the prettiest books I own. - First Law (the parchment looking ones). If I remember correctly I picked these up from the bookstore because I just finished the Realm of the Elderlings and their covers reminded me of them. (oh boy were they different on the inside) - the Lord of the Rings. I have a set of black paperbacks with the original illustration in shiny black and a single coloured ring. - a Song of Ice and Fire. Beautiful pastel coloured covers with a single image. - Gone (Michael Grant). Just simple black covers with a single black word on in with a coloured outline. - Nicolas Flamel (Michael Scott). I think my love for these books as a kid is where I got my love for the parchment theme.

I'd like you to do other ones of those. But maybe do them in tandem with an artist, I think it would be interesting to have a bit more of a critique of the composition, technique and so on.

The phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" always makes me laugh. Like, I get what they're going for and why but it's also funny to me in a literal sense that that's the point of the cover is to entice you into reading the book.

I just bought the Mistborn trilogy in white. Sadly I already have the first two Stormlight Archive books in their original covers. I also have the hardcover of The First Law trilogy and those are some of my favourite covers ever. Rather plain but something about them really draws me in.

If it wasn't for the cover art of the book, I nver would have picked up and looked at THE GREAT HUNT (first edition) when I walked by it at the library. The art style was instantly recognisable to me as that of Darrell K Sweet, whom I was very familiar with from the many many Xanth novels I'd read plus dozens of other fantasy novels from around the house as I grew up and from the libraries that I had read recently. I know many people derise Sweet's artwork (with good reason on some of the WoT books, sure), but for my 18 year old mind (at that so long ago time) his artwork was always associated with good Fantasy literature. So I immediately was interested in THE GREAT HUNT and picked it and book one up right then and there from the library. I took them on a family road/camping trip that summer, and my world completely changed when it came to how I viewed Fantasy literature.

I do like the simplicity of ASOIF covers, and others that tend to be more made up of symbols, abstractions, close up of objects and such. The "First Law's" original cover and "Black Leopard, Red Wolf" works for me too. It's something that draws my eye a lot more than as you said, "Shadowy figures staring off at something." It seems like something you only really found in Literary Fiction and sometimes YA books before. But the Gentlemen Bastard's cover is really dope looking and just evokes the tone and atmosphere of the story within without looking cheesy AF.

Very interesting array of covers! Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the original title and I believe the cover was of the train on the front and a tall man on the back. Northern Lights was the original for Golden Compass, but I'm not sure of the first cover.
