Recently I competed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada at the local SAU (Submission Arts United) competition.
This was the first Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition since the sport was officially banned about 7 years ago and my first tournament in a few months (coming off some injuries)
Lucky for me, my friend and amazing human being Javad Mahjoub of Iran, who also happens to be a 3x Olympian, signed up to give me one of my biggest challenges yet. I had 2 tough matches before this one and Javad had two quick submissions. We met in the finals of the Open Weight Bracket.
Javad also happened to be a well-known Brown Belt in BJJ who recently took 2nd at the ADCC Canada Open, falling to Big Dan from New Wave BJJ in a crazy match.
This was your classic College Wrestler vs. Black Belt in Judo match with a bit of Jiu-jitsu spice added into it.
I mean no disrespect to Javad with this video. He is a friend, a warrior, an amazing human being, and someone I respect so much. Today was just my day and tomorrow could be his.

@chewiechewbacca142 I couldn't say exactly when we incorporated BJJ in our practices. But, Judo was derived from Japanese Jiu Jitzu which I believe is where maybe the Gracies derived BJJ from! Anyways, any good Dojo was teaching Japanese Jui Jitzu with the Judo. We learned all types of chokes and arm and hand bar/locks. Did you learn Judo with the chokes and arm bars or was that just in BJJ? Since MMA is so popular now, how do they teach everything? Is it all combined in one.class or separate?

@@jameshouchins9469 I’m not as experienced as you are but I think Judo became much more softer after it became an olympic sport. No legs, no ground game. In old judo there was even submissions. It was definitely closer to BJJ standup

Excellent match brother! Beautiful techniques on a skilled and visibly strong opponent. I'm always telling my student's at Leviathan, when it comes to takedowns it's all about timing and chaining things together. You can have great technique but if your timing sucks, good luck using it. Oh and great composure in that armlock . Making technical adjustments but also being ready to tap if needed. That wasn't a stubborn escape, it was a smart one👊

In NoGi I would take the wrestler every time, assuming the competitors are of roughly equal levels of skill in their respective disciplines. In the Gi I would still take the wrestler, but it will be a lot more evenly matched and will require the wrestler to be very cagey about the grip-fighting. A high level Judoka can do things with a Gi that a wrestler couldn't even dream of.

" In the Gi I would still take the wrestler" lol you have no idea what you're talking about. International-level judokas are absolute gripfighting demons and would smoke wrestlers in a gi match.
@schenksteven1
@schenksteven1 10 ай бұрын
@@64wy4x8s First of all, I was talking about a BJJ ruleset, just to be clear. If it is a contemporary Judo ruleset, I would agree with you. We actually have an international caliber Judoka in our gym, and he is a gripfighting demon. Having said that, if a high level Judoka will smoke a high level wrestler in the Gi, you will have to explain to me why Judo changed its rules to disallow leg attacks? So I will re-iterate what I said. Two opponents of equal skill, in a BJJ-Gi ruleset, I would predict the wrestler wins 60% of the time, but he better be very careful to avoid grips on his way to his leg attacks. The match we are watching is a good example (although, of course, we aren't really watching a match between Judo and wrestling as the Judoka also has some high level wrestling). Brandon Reed doesn't score with throws, and many of his shots come from the open. If they were in the Gi, he would have been a lot more wary about the tie ups, but he could still score.

@64wy4x8s 10 ай бұрын
@@schenksteven1 The International Olympic Committee(IOC) forced the International Judo Federation(IJF) to remove leg grabs because matches had become boring as hell in the 2000~2010 period. First of all the IOC cares about making money and maximizing profits above all else. The IOC wants as many spectators in the stadiums watching the Olympics and as much TV viewership as possible. It's no secret that several rule changes were made to make it more TV friendly (reduced pin duration, reduced regulation time, introduction of blue gi, etc) Why had judo become boring in the 2000s? Well back then it was common to see this type of match: When judoka A was up on points against judoka B, A would just spam shitty non-scoring double legs and be defensive, doing just enough not to get a shido(penalty) to run down the clock and waste time. Referees couldn't give judoka A a shido because technically, A was "attacking". Nowadays referees will give shidos for false attacks, but that wasn't a thing back then. Judo during the 2000~2010 period had become a boring spectator sport due to all the stalling tactics. Cherrypicked highlight videos only show the exciting moments from that era, they don't convey the bigger picture of the sport at all. I don't agree with the decision at all, I think there could have been other changes made to the ruleset to make the sport more spectator-friendly besides removing leg grabs, but that's what happened. And the gripfighting rules are to prevent stalling as well. People that have never done judo seriously don't understand why the gripfighting rules are neccessary either. It's way too easy to stall and be defensive in a gi. 99% of the rules in judo are centered around preventing stalling and forcing offense. Judo today on the whole is much more action packed than it used to be, any sort of defensiveness is quickly penalized. The rules were made to make judo more spectator friendly, anything else is conjecture.

You can shoot for takedowns without the knee drop, the reason wrestlers typically do is because of the lower stance. In MMA for example, it's largely unnecessary due to the taller stance. And in terms of who is harder to grapple against, it depends on the martial artist, not the martial art. (That being said, wrestlers' level of fitness is very annoying to go up against.@@Alexsnakedoc
