Training the end, or (kake), of a judo throw involves refining the final phase of the technique where you execute the throw itself. This phase is crucial for successful execution and requires a combination of timing, balance, and technique. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to train the kake of a judo throw:
Understand the Mechanics: Before practicing the kake, ensure you have a solid understanding of the entire throw, including the initial off-balancing (kuzushi) and entry (tsukuri) phases. Each throw has its unique mechanics, so study the specific techniques you're aiming to improve.
Break Down the Kake: Analyze the kake phase into its constituent parts. This might include foot placement, hip movement, pulling or pushing actions, and the direction of force applied to your opponent.
Drill Techniques Slowly: Begin by practicing the kake slowly and methodically. Focus on precision and proper form rather than speed. Break the movement down into smaller segments if necessary, and pay attention to your body positioning and weight distribution.
Focus on Timing: Timing is critical in executing the kake effectively. Work on synchronizing your movements with your opponent's actions, especially during randori (sparring) sessions. Practice reading your opponent's movements to anticipate the right moment to execute the throw.
Use Uchikomi (Fit-ins): Uchikomi involves repeatedly fitting in to execute the kake without actually completing the throw. This drill allows you to focus on the entry and initial stages of the kake phase. Start slowly and gradually increase speed as your technique improves.
Partner Drills: Work with a training partner to practice the kake under controlled conditions. Start with cooperative drills where your partner provides minimal resistance, allowing you to focus on technique. As you progress, gradually increase resistance to simulate real-world situations.
Receive Feedback: Regularly seek feedback from your instructor or more experienced training partners. They can offer valuable insights into areas for improvement and provide guidance on refining your technique.
Visualization: Mental imagery can be a powerful tool for improving technique. Spend time visualizing yourself executing the kake with perfect form and timing. This mental rehearsal can help reinforce neural pathways and improve muscle memory.
Conditioning and Flexibility: Ensure your body is adequately conditioned and flexible to perform the kake effectively. Strengthening exercises, such as squats and deadlifts, can improve lower body strength, while stretching routines can enhance flexibility in key muscle groups.
Consistent Practice: Like any skill in judo, mastering the kake requires consistent practice over time. Set aside dedicated training sessions focused specifically on improving your throwing technique, and be patient with your progress.
By following these steps and remaining dedicated to your training, you can gradually improve the end, or kake, of your judo throws and become a more proficient judoka.

Judo is not only a martial art but also a popular competitive sport. Judo matches take place on a mat and involve throwing an opponent onto their back, pinning them for a designated time, or submitting them through joint locks or strangles. Matches are scored based on the control, force, and execution of techniques. Judo's worldwide popularity led to its inclusion in the Olympic Games, where it has been a competitive event since 1964.
