About my Throw: I‘ve intended to throw a katagurumma but at the end it was a yukootoshi as you‘ve said in the video :) anyway I am not an expert about names of the techniques; I just like to throw Ippon 😄 PS: Nice Video 👍🏻

Yoko Otoshi is basically Tani Otoshi at a 90deg angle to Uke instead of aligned with him. As such, Tori's leg goes to the outside of Uke's legs, not to the inside. The mechanism is a tripping action by trapping Uke's foot behind Tori's leg while Tori shifts Uke's weight to the other side of the leg, pulling Uke over. Similar to how Yoko Wakare does it with the side of Tori's body instead of the leg.

16:10 Okano Isao is a kouchi gari specialist, but he's not the coach at Tsukuba, he's the coach at Ryutsu Keizai. The person you're referring to at Tsukuba who does the osoto-style entrance to kouchi gari is Okada Hirotaka.

I don't think it's necessarily that shoulder locks are disallowed, but the phrasing that is used in the IJF Rules is "To apply kansetsu-waza anywhere other than to the elbow joint" (Direct hansoku-make). However, attacks like kimuras and omoplatas have been said to be allowed in IJF Refereeing seminars. There are competition examples of kimuras, reverse omoplatas, te-gatama etc being used and scored in competition, whether as a turnover or a full submission. But there are also examples where the same things seem to be penalised? It's maybe just a poor choice of language in the rules, as you could say these techniques are still applied to the elbow, even if that's not where it hurts uke. What would be much better is the IJF stating unequivocally what armlocks are allowed, either as a list of techniques or an explicit statement about shoulder locks being okay (when, say, the elbow is bent), or even just saying that all kimura-style holds are valid kansetsu-waza. It causes confusion for everyone, sometimes being penalised and other times being scored.

I have a question: there are many videos on good throws against taller opponents but isn't it easier for them (The short Judokas)? I mean the don't really have to go deep for O-goshi or Ippon Seoi-Nage.
@jojolp20982 жыл бұрын
Ohh and what are good throws against smaller Judokas
@JudoHighlights20152 жыл бұрын
I think there are pros and cons to each style. Yeah seoi can be good, but taller guys can be evasive with their long legs too. Uchimata works good on shorter judoka

In Minute 5:10 I believe it is KO-SOTO-GAKE after simulating KATA-GURUMA. It is not YOKO-OTOSHI
@JudoHighlights20152 жыл бұрын
No, they’ve been calling this Yoko Otoshi recently.
@ca14982 жыл бұрын
5:10 Kata guruma attempt turning into a ken-ken kouchi gari. Only half-joking. There is ken-ken ouchi that goes the other way. This looked like kouchi but it was still going towards the other leg. And I agree that any time you put your head, neck or shoulder under an armpit and start lifting, it is a kata guruma if you can finish the roll. If you abandon and change direction, I guess it becomes a finish with a different throw.
@haydenfu90532 жыл бұрын
Maybe yoko otoshi is when the leg is trapped and kata guruma is purely the arms?
@topis69872 жыл бұрын
Chadi has a good video on the subject. If I remember his words correctly: in yoko otoshi you have to throw yourself horizontal, in other words, sacrifice yourself. In kata guruma you stay more upright.
@MNaeem52 жыл бұрын
The kata guruma yoko otoshi difference is yoko otoshi there is no shoulder load,with kata guruma there is

Ne Waza lover here. Shoulder locks are supposed to be illegal but Ude Garami has always been allowed. (even versions where tori uses legs to apply it.) I've never understood the idea that it's an elbow lock though. Seems like you would have to do some weird pressuring in order to make it have breaking force on the elbow instead of the shoulder. But what do I know.🤷♂️
@Hipp0campus_12 жыл бұрын
If the shoulder is locked up properly Ude garami works mostly on the elbow. My best way to explain it: Think of arm wrestling where you just turn the opponents arm in a circular motion. If his shoulder cannot move along this motion, the ligaments in his elbow or the bone will break.

@@JudoHighlights2015 Exactly, the Kuzushi is done by grabbing the belt, as it is in Tsuri-goshi. In O-Goshi you place your hand and arm deep around the hip but without grabbing the belt. Anyway, thanks mate!!. Your site is fantastic!. I’m a huge fan.
