The title of video is not wrong. Sorry but Kosei Inoue named the technique not me. HE said he was demonstrating Uchi-Mata, it's Uchi-Mata on the far leg. He's the World & Olympic Champion and he speaks Japanese by the way!

Uchimata (inner thigh) Inoue targets the far leg inner thigh. This is uchimata however it is common for this throw to become hane goshi. Hane Goshi has an up, flip, down, feeling to it. Often it feels like Ogoshi with too much space. Uchimata has a cork screwing feeling to it. Like uke is spiraling around the elevated leg. In many cases of the far leg uchimata (considered by many to be the "real McCoy" uchimata) only uke and tori know for sure.

So...This is a youtube video where everyone has the freedom of speech.Nothing wrong with that.I am of that opinion as well. Well...i'ts an uchimata.From what i know the "textbook style" hane goshi is just like a kekomi geri(side kick).I mean the way the leg moves. This one is vertical straight up,it's inside the legs...it's called uchi mata.Enough with that. However there is another great point to this video.if you measure the ryhtym you'll realise that Kosei Inoue Sensei is a lot faster using this method.He is skipping one or two steps.now..if you do the conversion to frequency and rythyms...for the first uchimata you have 2 bits and throw,for the second uchi mata you have 1 bit and throw.

@corismsyn Yes it is. On the DVD set he goes through the throw on Gill from multiple angles after showing the one-step Uchimata.

this is modified version of uchimata. footwork and rotation is very advanced technique.

@Kalidone86 It looks like hane goshi to me too. It's still a great technique. Besides, the classical entry for Hane Goshi, Harai O-goshi and Uchi-mata are all so similar that at Inoue's level, their practically the same throw - only your reaping leg goes in a different place.

@a0classcriminal I was also struggling with the one foot entry, I wanted to learn it for competition since it's really hard to tell the difference between this and o-soto-gari just judging by the footwork. Turns out in the practice, his supporting leg was on the left side. In the actual throw, it was right between uke's legs, if not a little bit more to the right. The foot placement really made a lot of difference here

@boredinho Well Kosei didn't object to the filming. I have bought his boxset and suggest everyone viewing these videos does as well. One of the dvds is only on Uchi-mata so these just give a quick insight to what is a great production by Fighting Films.

@MrFocusFreak This is uchimata. I have a poor hane goshi but a decent uchimata and I promise you there is a difference. I do uchimata similar to Inoue in the sense that for uchimata I attack the far leg. The mechanics of this throw is not a hip throw. For Hane Goshi it is a hip throw. Please see a demonstration of Hane Goshi by Hirano Ryosaku and you will see the differences.

Brilliant thanks. A 1 Dan student of mine hurt back in randori with attempting this uchimata ( oikomi ) It seems dangerous to learn here, better to study this in randori in relaxed randori like in japan!

@corismsyn when he threw gill he feinted with o uchi gari first, causing gill to brace ever so slightly. he then followed it straight up with uchi mata. im not sure if it was the one step entry or not.

@MrChickenFajita Hane Goshi has nothing to do with leg placement, and everything to do with the Springing Hip action of the throw (hence the term spring hip throw). Though this stepped input to throw makes it look like Hane Goshi, since there is no spring hip action, it is uchi-mata.

Jesus you could not be more wrong! Watch Inoue's DVDs. Study Judo for more than 5 years. Hanegoshi has NOTHING to do with whether the leg is bent or not, although 99% it is. Uchimata can be done on the inside of either thigh, or up the middle, ie Ko, O, and Taka Uchimata. What makes Hanegoshi is a "springing hip." There is no hip spring in this throw, therefore it is Uchimata. Inoue is one of the best to ever live at Uchimata, but of course you know more about his tokuiwaza than he does....

@Kalidone86 The video is fine! Watch Inoue's DVD set. Better yet, just do Judo a few years under a good teacher. It's not Inoue's fault you don't know what Hanegoshi is. I'm betting it looks terrible.

Make it so people can't comment, it'll be for the better. Hanegoshi is THE MOST misinterpreted and poorly performed and taught technique in Judo. Everyone thinks they know what Hanegoshi is, and everyone thinks they can do one. 9/10 people can't. Hanegoshi and what Inoue is showing here are miles apart. Well, not miles, there are some similarities but this throw is 100% one step/cross step Taka/O Uchimata.

@Kalidone86 Jujitsu, not Judo. You've only been training 6 years. That's not enough time in my opinion to truly be able to tell the difference in Hanegosi and Uchimata. Don't need to be a tough guy.
