I think all of us need secret gardens to escape to when the world is too harsh and people are so cold. This song always takes me to that place. Each time I return from that place I am stronger.

I hope you find the secret gardens, where someone loves you and some people care.

I can definitely relate to this song. This song and its lyrics bring back memories of my grandmother's farm with me gathering chicken eggs, feeding the cows and horses. I remember climbing apple trees and eating apples while sitting on the limbs of the trees. There was an old pear tree which I was unable to climb. I remember they had a hand pump to pump water into the house from their well. They even had an outhouse. I remember in the winter sledging down the hillside stopping just short of the stream that bordered the western side of the farm. When my grandmother died, my uncle who inherited the farm, sold it.The old farm is now gone, replaced by cluster housing in the early 1960s.

My favorite of Judy Collins. I heard her in Dallas 2014. Her voice at 75 is still pure and lovely.

I heard her in about 1995 and felt enchanted for days after.

This may be my very favorite of Judy Collins songs, and including the letter makes it even more personal! Thank you Judy, for sharing your heart with us!

This song brings back memories of my childhood and my late grandparents. I virtually grew up at their place. I still remember sitting at their kitchen table, running up the hill in front of their house, building a snowman on their porch, eating granny's homemade pancakes and playing imaginary games with my stuffed animals in their living room. Somehow the child in me never dies...

those first three chords at the beginning evoke the most intense melancholy i have ever felt. like a memory long ago filled with such joy, yet so far out of reach, only existing in weak fragments of our memories

A heartbreaking song. To me it illustrates how we need are are made for eternal life, whether it exists or not.

Thank you so much for posting. This is one of my faves of Judy's. So evocative of a time that will never come again. Her reading the handwritten letter at the beginning is heartbreaking. " he looked so smart in his uniform" and " I don't suppose we will ever be together in that same way again". If that doesn't put a lump in your throat, better check your pulse. Such a unique voice.
