Jacques Brel was a brilliant singer/lyrist/actor. This song 'Sons Of' is probably my fav. Thankfully I heard it again in the amazing film 'Flashbacks of a Fool', directed by Haille Walsh with much help from the movies star Daniel Craig who without his help the movie wouldn't have been made. Craig was one of the executive producers. This song 'Sons Of' is played in the opening of the film and again in part of Daniel Craig's character Joe when an adolescent. The film has another song that hit home for me. The scene is also priceless. Song is 'If There is Something' by Roxy Music' and it too is played twice in two different important scenes in Joe's life. Very good movie yet lots of heartfelt tragedy too. 💔😢💔 Although Jacques Brel recorded most of his songs in French and occasionally in Dutch, he became an influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers, such as Scott Walker, David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Marc Almond, Neil Hannon, and Rod McKuen. English translations of his songs were recorded by many performers, including Bowie, Walker, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, John Denver, The Kingston Trio, Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, James Dean Bradfield, Frank Sinatra, and Andy Williams. I'm surprised Sting isn't on this amazing list.

I actually never heard of her before. I'm going to Saint Mark's Church in New York City today. Hopefully this will be my new church. I recently moved to the area and I was reading on their newsletter that she goes there. So I decided to check out who she is. Another weird sign is I was actually born in 1976. 🤔

Song was written and first sung by Jacques Brel in French. MANY famous singers have sung his songs....even Frank Sinatra. Sons of the thief, sons of the saint Who is the child with no complaint Sons of the great or sons unknown All were children like your own The same sweet smiles, the same sad tears The cries at night, the nightmare fears Sons of the great or sons unknown All were children like your own... So long ago: long, long, ago... But sons of tycoons or sons of the farms All of the children ran from your arms Through fields of gold, through fields of ruin All of the children vanished too soon In tow'ring waves, in walls of flesh Among dying birds trembling with death Sons of tycoons or sons of the farms All of the children ran from your arms... So long ago: long, long, ago... But sons of your sons or sons passing by Children we lost in lullabies Sons of true love or sons of regret All of the sons you cannot forget Some built the roads, some wrote the poems Some went to war, some never came home Sons of your sons or sons passing by Children we lost in lullabies... So long ago: long, long, ago But, sons of the thief, sons of the saint Who is the child with no complaint Sons of the great or sons unknown All were children like your own The same sweet smiles, the same sad tears The cries at night, the nightmare fears Sons of the great or sons unknown All were children like your own... Like your own, like your own.

(I think) Queen Noor supports a charity wherein Isralie Mothers and Palistinian Mothers recite poems/homages about children lost to war and the audience has to decide which side has suffered the loss...

Oh dear. I'm a huge fan of Collins, but this ain't her best. Behind the beat, under the note, ghastly translation and an unforgivable arrangement which not only mishandles the harmonies of the last two lines of the main choruses, but turns this incomparable song's driving urgency and anger to mush. Do yourself a favour and watch Brel himself sing it. Do Judy a favour and forget all about this one

Her album version is a lot cleaner, though iirc, it doesn't include the "So long ago" bits from the original "Alive & Well" revue, as she does here. She's always clearly changed a few key things on her songs - harmonies, notes. They tend to be slight, but they do make her arrangements different enough from the originals to make them gifts to us.

Yes. Her studio version on , I believe, "Whales and Nightingales" is much better.

Very strange version - lacks the driving 3/4 rhythm of the Brel and Scott Walker versions, and so seems very lifeless and insipid. I don't think it's Judy's fault - just a very weak arrangement. Her version of Marieke is fantastic.

I agree. Something's off here. It's disjointed. Her studio version on "Whales and Nightingales" is much more effective.

Judy just did the song as Judy. Many famous singers sung Jacques Brel songs their way in English. Songs were originally in French. Scott Walker does a great version of this song 'Sons of' but I hope to hear it in French one day.... this year if I can locate certain LPs. Although he recorded most of his songs in French and occasionally in Dutch, he became an influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers, such as Scott Walker, David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Marc Almond, Neil Hannon, and Rod McKuen. English translations of his songs were recorded by many performers, including Bowie, Walker, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, John Denver, The Kingston Trio, Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, James Dean Bradfield, Frank Sinatra, and Andy Williams. How WOW is that!! Greatness of Jacques Brel are lyrist. But he was also a brilliant actor in his later age. Sadly he died too young from Lung cancer. I always thought Bridgett Bardot would die young of lung cancer too. The cigarette smoking and sun bathing aged her terribly. But she's one of my heros for animal rights. Go
