One beautiful summer night in 1991, I had a job doing some investigative engineering on the San Diego Bay Bridge. We were working on a barge. About a quarter mile north of us , in Embarcadaro Park, Judy Collins was performing. I can remember this song floating out across the warm water of the bay. It washed over me like the breath of God, and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.

When I lived in Dublin, one of my housemates was friends with Sandy Denny, Sandy visited us a few times. We would sit by the fire, drinking tea, and singing until dawn. Her voice was so beautiful and she was so much fun. We all loved her. We were a tight group of friends. One was Neil Jordan, the director but at that time we were all still in college. Susie and Brian, the owners had a beautiful 2 year old, Aoife. I loved playing with and reading to her. She must be in her fifties now. Who knows where the time goes?

Those first notes brought the tears. The reason was all those nights in college when she sang me to sleep (on her records, of course.) Now, I am 70, so her voice has deep resonance for me.

For reasons I will not explain here, this song always brings a tear to my eye. Sandy Denny was a part of my youth and she is buried in the same cemetery as my parents. When I became ill a few years ago this song continually played in my head as I walked with my dogs across the fields and thought about my life. This is a great rendition of it.

Many "gold and silver voices" as Judy said here, have sung beautiful song this over the years. But it's Judy's silver, flute-like voice and interpretation that are the definitive rendition to my ear and heart. Takes me back decades, to a time when life was young and the future held so much promise. Even in these weird, dark days in which we find ourselves now, this dear song and singer are timeless and much appreciated. Soothes the heart. Thanks.

+John Ellis I first heard this song around the time my mother passed away at 52 years of age (I was 24). I very much appreciated the song then. You don't have to be 51 (my current age) to deeply appreciate songs like this. In fact, I sang "Born Free" as a solo my second or third year in high school vocal chorus class, I knew freedom meant the world to me, and went on to twenty plus years of military service starting in 1984. But, at 51 I still appreciate "It's Only Rock and Roll (but I like it)", "American Woman", "Sunshine Superman", even some 70's disco, occasional hip-hop, classical, John Prine and John Denver, whatever (I'll listen to almost anything...at least for a sampling, more if I like it. Time and love, and just a "joyful noise" that's what music is about.

She will always be the ultimate singer for me-even if so many of her songs make me feel melancholy not only because the years have sped by but because of the lyrics of her best ones. I ACTUALLY got to meet her at a bookstore about 15 years ago and was so starstruck that I told her I loved how she sang "Leaving on a Jet Plane", yes I did-but she was very kind, and we laughed.

@110010929215489486358 Judy Collins has a beautiful voice, but for me, (music is very subjective of course) this particular version is just a bit too slow and ventures (slightly) into the 'easy listening' category; thereby losing some of the wistful, melancholy beauty of the Sandy Denny original. Having said that, huge respect to Judy Collins for helping to raise the profile of the late Sandy Denny, who wrote this incredible song when she was in her late teens.

A lovely version by one of the all-time greats. Ms. Collins is a treasure. While I think no one can equal the magnificence of Sandy Denny, Judy's version is heartfelt and beautiful. And how is it possible that the older Judy Collins gets the more beautiful she becomes?

Sandy's is definitely the definitive version. But Judy did turn me onto this song, before I even knew Sandy, so I am forever grateful. The version from colors of the day, is what I played at my mom's funeral. Rufus Wainright does a great cover as well...

learned this from a songbook in 1971, has such lovely melody for ironing out the ruffled places where we take losses too seriously. love does not die over distance or time. but it does escape our grasping will to keep it near forever. maybe truest love somehow requires a temporary separation by and by. just to prove it endures.

Wow...just wow...what an incredible performance of this song! Super fantastic piano accompaniment & bass guitar (?) solo, too. (I purchased this album when it first came out & fell in love with this song, but more recently I have associated it with the movie "A Walk On The Moon", since I saw it a few years ago. The song appears during a fairly sad part toward the end of the movie...check it out if you haven't seen it...excellent flick...Woodstock era, vacationing in the Catskills...great nostalgic stuff!)

Beautiful song with a question we ask ourselves many times. Time doesn’t go anywhere! Time is eternal and endless. We the people are the ones moving in time, coming into it when we’re born and stepping out of time when we die. We try to understand it describing it in ways we can to contain it like hours, days ,years but in fact time transcends us just like the Milky Way does.

The first time I ever heard of Sandy Denny was when she was featured on 1 song off of the 4th Led Zeppelin album, of all places. I got into the Fairport Convention later, and then was sad to hear Sandy died so young. It is good to see the beautiful Judy honoring her and still singing this song.

I can't put into words what this song means to me, or the singer. I was born in the late 40s and have seen so much happen in my life that I truly cannot say where the time has gone. Love Judi Collins a person who reminds me of much gentler times that we now find ourselves. Slava Ukraine!

I listened to this as I was with my daughter and her husband and her twin as she was giving birth. She was sleeping because she had had the epidural and I was sitting beside her, holding her hand while her twin and her husband slept for a while. I purposefully put this on because looking at her that’s just what I thought. “Who knows where the time goes?” It seems like yesterday that I was giving birth to her. Now here she is giving birth to her first child. I love this version, I love Judy Collins, and I am an oldie too so her voice has only gotten better with time. Always makes my eyes misty.
