On September 16, 1938, Judy Garland recorded this iconic song by James F. Hanley for "Listen, Darling". But the film cut out the wonderful swing arrangement. Here, in stereo, is how the scene might have played had that section been used.

Written in 1934 , Zing ! Went The Strings Of My Heart " was a Garland favorite while she was still a young vaudeville sensation . Her mother Ethel is said to have made her original arrangement , with its slow introductory passage and dramatic mid - song shift to a swinging up tempo finale . She sang this version on NBC's Shell Chateau radio program on the night of November 16 , 1935 , with her stricken father listening in on a hospital room radio . The following day he died of spinal meningitis . " I sang my heart out for him , " Garland later recalled , " but by morning he was gone . " The song remained in her repertoire the rest of her life . She sang it in her 1938 film Listen Darling and on numerous radio appearances . It would later become a perennial concert favorite .

Raised by a homosexual father and a domineering mother, who ran a theater as a family business in a mountain town where they raised their daughters in stage and she was already a skilled performer by early adolescence. She had a hard life but she had unbelievable talent.

Knowing how much this song meant to Judy because of her 1935 performance on November 16 on " The Shell Chateau Hour", and the passing of her father that next morning from Spinal Meningitis, and him being able to hear his 'Baby' sing this from his hospital bed one last time. It has to be my absolute favorite of her songs, and if any song ever truly belonged to Judy it has to be this one, even more so than "Over The Rainbow".

It’s frustrating that MGM felt the need to tame her naturally powerful voice down to a softer tone. When she sang this in 1935 (when she was only 12!!) it was so much more powerful she sounded like a 30 year old

@Broadway Classic's : Can you please tell me the name of this Movie where Judy G. sang this song, I would love to watch it. For some reason 5 people gave this performance a thumbs down, They need to check out the chord progression in this song. And this is one of the easier songs of that era, The song has massive chord changes and Modulates/Changes key on the 2nd Chorus. And she didn't need an auto tune processor to correct her pitch when she sang . She learned about music theory as she progressed as a singer and entertainer. . She was blessed with a great voice and learned her craft from the bottom up.
