Judy Garland - What'll I do - The Judy Garland Show - 4K - Colour - 60FPS.
I've spent quite some time restoring this video, it's one of my favourites.
It’s restored from a capture of the TV episode in 1963 downloaded from KZbin so there are limits of what to expect. With the low bit rate the trade off with upscaling was going to be a loss of detail.
The process involved expanding the video into individual frames and resizing the frames to 8k so I have some wiggle room detail wise. I wanted to get every little detail that I could from the low bitrate video.
Then I created PS App Droplet to automatically edit and adjust each frame based on my edits to one frame. Then it automatically output the adjusted frames to my hard drive.
After this I imported the image sequence and recompiled the video using the same technique as animation.
From there I cropped the 8k video to 4k 16:9 which should pinch in the details and make it look a little better at that resolution.
In the end, I hope that I have something that stirs more vivid memories of the great actor and singer, Judy Garland.

This looks amazing. And you've got her sounding amazingly good too, with the clarity and detail in the audio. Sound like there is slight reverb on it, which only adds to the 'live' experience. I'm used to seeing these Judy Garland Show clips in b&w, which I love, but the treatment you have given them has the astonishing effect of making Judy really "present" and immediate in way that I have never seen before. Great work.

Yes, I created a space enhancement for the audio and added a light reverb. Great catch Marc! 😉 I know some will prefer the original audio but this added to it a way that made it more “real” to me. Hard to describe.

Agree. It sounds really "live", and you can hear all the wonderful nuances in her voice. Have you considered working your magic on "Come Rain or Come Shine? The version where she is wearing the spectacular 'poppy dress', from the same in-concert episode as 'Smile'. For me, it is one of her best-ever performances, although she moves around a lot, so the backgrounds might give you some problems. Alternatively, I'd nominate 'Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home' from another of the in-concert epidodes. Judy stands still against a plain background for that one.
