Judy Holliday was a true screen gem. She made regrettably few films - but what films they were! She died in her early 40's so there is no telling what she had yet to achieve. However, I would like to think that she had many triumphs ahead. Rest in peace, Great Lady.

The broadway recording of the music is available - I like it more than the soundtrack to the movie. Broadway was less censored, and catered to New York audiences which were less puritanical.

She was doing Hot Spot when she died. I remember the announcement on the Radio. I was a young teen living in NYC. Our lives were intertwined with Broadway. I never quite got over her terrible way of dying. People spoke hardly at all in those days of breast cancer. Don't remember if I had seen this episode.... watched it regularly. One of the finest actors Hollywood or Broadway ever introduced! She was beautiful, graceful and so much fun to watch (and hear!) My heart breaks to know how young she was when cancer took her from us. Born Yesterday is one of my favorite movies and has brought me to tears watching her learn about our great country. I miss her and all of the greats of old Hollywood. These spoiled brats of today owe a huge debt to those greats. I'm so sick of science fiction, comic book blockbusters or remakes of the greats. Where are the writers who use their own imagination instead of "sampling" or stealing from the written word! Don't even get me started on the so called music industry!! Make something original...I don't think a good song had been composed since 1979!! I digress, we miss you Judy😢..now someone get creative and stop w the incest stories!! Hollywood is sick, somebody help heal it, PLEASE.

If you ask any actor or actress who has tried to do both they will all admit that the toughest roles are characters who are supposed to be funny. However if you watch the skill of those like Judy Holliday or maybe on the male side, Carey Grant you would think those are the easiest because they make it look so. I suppose I would have to put Jean Arthur in that same category.

One of the most extraordinary women in Hollywood, she actually wasn't a dumb blonde, she was extraordinarily intelligent and smart and had a very high IQ, she only played a dumb blonde, she has said before "That it takes a great actress to play a dumb blonde so convincing. She was actually multi talented. It's so unfair we lost her at a young age and her talent and "what would have been" was taken from us at age 43 in the 1965 of breast cancer.

Kilgallen never misses. She is so perceptive! Judy Holliday is one of my heroes, a truly amazing woman, a creative genius. If you haven't seen her movies, watch them! She typically wrote or rewrote most of her own dialogue. She also had an interesting live, coming up against Sen. Joe McCarthy and coming out on top. Sadly, she died from cancer when she was in her 40s.

I wish Judy Holliday and Marilyn Monroe had lived along enough to break their "dumb blonde" stereotypes. Serious roles that showed their ability as actresses. Can you imagine Holliday playing something like Mrs. Robinson in 'The Graduate' or Monroe playing the old, loud & fat Martha in "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf." If only...
@neildickson5394
@neildickson5394 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but Bette Davis wanted that Virginia Wolfe part. Personally, I wouldn't want to see MM that fat, that vulgar, but she proved herself several times a great actress in Don't Bother To Knock, Clash By Night, Bus Stop, Prince And The Showgirl, The Misfits. We can see that now, but in her day they wouldn't give her the credit she deserved. And, lovely Judy Holliday. A genius on film. Columbia used her as their answer to MM during the Monroe frenzy, and when that didn't work, they dumped her, and used Kim Novak. Stupid, and tragic.
@waynej2608
@waynej2608 5 жыл бұрын
@Ed Miller Not too kind of an assessment. And not exactly accurate either. I'd say her last completed film, The Misfits, demonstrated Marilyn's range. It showed the promise of more challenging work, but it wasn't to be. Bus Stop, also gives some insights into her talents. Some like Hot, showed her doing some fine comedic acting. Was she another Katherine Hepburn? Well, no. But, despite her emotional issues, she did manage to leave some impressive work, behind. And, I think, she'd have progressed as a mature actress, had she lived.

Yeah - she says here "I let nature take its course - I'm hoarse" This is actually true. She had throat surgery late 1960 for a benign tumor, but also discovered she had breast cancer/mastectomy (left side). After the demise of Hot Spot, she had pain on her right side. She was terminal. No one told her though since she was prone to depression. By '64 it was obvious. She checked into hospital May 26, 1965 and died 12 days later. Super sad story.

Ive only just watched Born Yesterday....She wipes the floor with Davis an Swanson. Judy isn't playing a version of herself the way they are. Both Swansons and Davis roles are versions of themselves and not at all a stretch. Judy's amazing vocal performance before you even get to the physicality of Billie Dawn is amazing. This is one instance where an oscar was not needlessly thrown at an "old favourite" and went deservedly to an actress who created an epic and very influential character. Magnificent actress! Judy had an extremely high IQ. She was called before the HUAC, where she put on her “dumb blonde” persona - meaning too silly, thick-headed, & clueless to inform on anyone. The HUAC bought her act and she walked away without bringing trouble down on herself or any of her showbiz friends! Takes a very brave, very smart person to do that! As far as I’m aware she was the only person to get away with such a thing. Judy is my favorite old-timey actress. Judy Holliday almost didn't even get the part in Born Yesterday. Harry Cohn did not want her. Garson Kanin set it up for Judy to do Adam's Rib to persuade Cohn to give it to her. George Cukor, who directed both films, agreed with Kanin, as did Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. I think what happened in 1950 was the fact that Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson took sufficient votes away from each other to permit Judy to walk in and take it. Whatever..Judy Holliday was wonderful and I miss her.
