She began as NYC movie usherette worshipping Bette Davis & working with Kirk Douglas before he was Kirk Douglas, raised by single Mom & riding public transit. 1 Harper's cover, several classic films, husband Bogie & 2 beautiful babies later she returned to NYC & became the Toast of Broadway (rather than toast in L.A.), 2 Tonys for 2 starring roles in MUSICALS a DECADE apart with THAT voice. NO ONE had a life like Lauren Bacall Betty Perske, sorry I omitted another legendary husband & child. Also rather than Cary Grant & Davis, her life became Bogart & Hepburn. Read her books, she explains it SO much better, why she's also prize winning author.

What a wonderful lady and a class act. She didn't get to talk much in this show, but I've watched a couple of interwievs with her in her late 60ies and in her 70ies and those have been very entertaining. Intelligence, humor, style, dignity personified.

Betty Bacall was one lovely woman. Look at that hair when she turns her head. She was gorgeous from every angle. I remember reading in her autobiography that some guy in makeup on her first film wanted to trim her full eyebrows and the filmaker told him "don't you touch her eyebrows, I want her to look exactly the way she looks!" ...or something like that.

So many people commenting that “they don’t make em like that anymore” “that is a real woman”, etc... the industry use to be able to control all these celebrity’s images, so no, they don’t ‘make em’ like that anymore because celebrities are under major surveillance with their private lives shared with the public, which makes it almost impossible to craft and maintain such a strong narrative and public image like in those days. Ultimately, they would create an image that would sell to the public and celebrities had to maintain that image and do things like take on certain roles (even if they didn’t want to - in Lauren’s case, she was kicked out of the studio several times for refusing roles) because they didn’t have the autonomy they have today. These celebrity personalities are not authentic, they just learned to maintain them in the public eye and the whole industry was involved in upholding it. The industry and these values haven’t changed because celebrities are creating increasingly impossible to reach beauty standards, so I’m not praising what it is today and I wouldn’t advise romanticizing what it used to be either. Romanticizing any of this upholds contrived ideals of beauty and what it means to be a woman.
