Of all the TV variety shows ever aired...Judy's was the best. She was so brilliant, funny, modest and talented. This arrangement of " Some People" from Gypsy is just stellar.

SUCH an addictive arrangement!!

Judy Garland should have made the movie Gypsy instead of Rosalind Russell when they didnt want to cast Ethel Merman. Judy was Sondheim favourite for the role.She was young enough to play Natalie Wood s Mother (1922-1969 Judy 1938-1981 Natalie) but as the great, actress and singer she was would have been Excellent.

What an amazing arrangement! Peter Matz was a god. That brass writing, and the drum solo!

Was this Peter Matz? I didn't know he did arrangements for Judy? I assumed Mort did them. She first did this at the Manhattan Centre concert. I thought Mort did these arrangements for that concert???

I believe she first sang this song in a recorded concert she was doing of Broadway songs. She had some vocal issues and the album wasn't released until 1989 when they found it and released it 20 years after her death

Wow, thanks for sharing! I never realized she sand this great song on her show, hence I've never seen all of the episodes! Judy with Punch & Pow. Fantastic.

Kind of an ironic song for Judy to sing. In gypsy, this song is sung by the obsessed stage mother, something Judy had quite a bit of experience with in real life...

She comes in two bars early on this live performance bless her and you can hear the band trying to change to be with her. Good lads

What are you basing her coming in too early on?

I have the original recording, from the aborted album "Judy Takes Broadway." No, she comes in at the right time.
@glenconmc17 күн бұрын
Yes, but I think it is intentional as it would make the arrangement longer, and for TV they would speed up the tempos and cut some instrumentals. They cut out a chunk of instrumental from 'I'm Getting Married in the Morning' another arrangement from the Manhattan Centre concert that she also did on her show. @akrenwinkle

Oh, sorry, I was confused. There are a few bars missing from the original arrangement, but I am sure they took them out as they were not needed for the tv show, and yes, Judy did come in on time. 😊 @@akrenwinkle

I consider myself one of Judy's biggest fans but here, I think, her gift betrays her. The lyric is lost. Her mannerisms, vocal and physical, take over. I also thought I was watching someone strung out on speed.

I think I read that when Sondheim wrote the lyrics to "Gypsy" he imagined Judy Garland singing them. Listening to the original cast album it tantalizes the imagination to wonder what she would have done with the part. Ethel Merman was so great in it, probably that's why this version is so relentlessly snappy and different. It's not the song at its best, and doesn't give her the chance to approach the pathos of the song at all. Which is funny, because usually she drips pathos.
@dianaaljadeff29834 жыл бұрын
When the Gypsy movie was being produced one produtor wanted Judy as Rose in the movie .But Jack Warner didnt want her because they didnt get on well during A star is born production. He also didnt cast Ethel Merman for him to much for the movies.So Rosalind Russell was cast and she was half dubbed by Lisa Kirk. Russell was good but Garland and of course Merman would have been better. Warner made the movie for Natalie Wood who played Luise that later became Gypsy. But Styne and Sondheim composed for Merman as Rose and Gypsy wasnt as important when Sandra Church played her on stage.So it was a Merman role and if she wasnt cast only Garland could have.played her when the movie was made.

That would have been a really pathetic mama Rose....sorry..I think Garland would have been totally miscast..as for broadway oh just forget it....she would have been out second week of rehearsal never mind making it to opening night...

The tempo is too fast and there are a few moments when Judy doesn't seem too sure of the lyric but from 1:15 to the end she bats it out of the ball park. An OK number.
@jonathankieranwriter2 жыл бұрын
Not one of her best, but that might be due to the fact that the arrangement is way too frantic and she doesn’t seem to relate personally to the lyrics. The song doesn’t fit her artistic honesty or persona, so it seems she’s faking it. Going through the motions. (I always thought the song and entire score for that show were overrated, anyhow … #ShowsHimselfOut )
@waif579 жыл бұрын
Tempo WAY too fast. She often did this when her voice was not up to truly interpreting the lyrics. And very hyper. It's this kind of performance that turned audiences off back then. Even now, it would too much. There were brilliant performances during the series, but also too many like this.
