Been loving the videos, graduated as a mechanical engineer but have been working as a manufacturing engineer for the past year or so. Have recently been missing the design side of things and have been loving your videos because recently I have decided I might try and apply some of the engineering knowledge im learning from your videos to over engineer the shit out of a little RC car or something I think that would be fun. Do I need to worry about over engineering a small scale rc car? Probably not but being able to say I have worked out all the equations and designed it would be cool.

Brilliant. This channel has a huge potential when it comes to the math part of automotive engineering, and even given the fact that mechanical engineering is such an under-represented field in the KZbin content space. Keep it up!

I am getting a bit confused. Your first equation Fa = Pressure x Area of brake pad seems like it should be Fa = Brake line pressure x area of piston. This would give you the Force exerted on the Pad's. The pressure (Pa) the pad exerts on the rotor would then be Fa divided by brake pad area. In the second column it seems like Pa is now Piston force Fa divided by brake pad area to give you pressure the pads exert. Multiplying that back by the pad area will just get you right back to Fa = piston force. I can't see how your last equation accounts for the pad area as it seems like Fa comes back to being the piston force on the pads. Maybe you are saying that brake line pressure gets multiplied by the area of the brake pad and not the caliper piston? Has my thinking been wrong this whole time? The only way I can visualize this working is the following. Fa = brake line pressure x piston area. (Force the piston exerts on the pads.) P = Fa / pad area T = (u * P * Theta * (D^3 - d^3)) / 24 You lose the interaction between piston and pad for me on the last step.

excellent brake down of the aspects of braking!!! How does the surface area of the brake pad affect the normal force on the rotor? The caliper piston force is one thing but brake pads come in all sizes. Otherwise, excellent vid!
