This podcast is about sharing the last moments of our pregnancy journey leading up to our birth and our postpartum experience. Our pregnancy overall was amazing but we did experience some postpartum complications that were unexpected. This journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions for us but we're here to break it all down in what we call a "therapy session". We're also excited to introduce our baby boy Jakai as he makes his KZbin debut!

pregnancy protects you by default, because it's working overtime to protect your baby. the moment you deliver, everything that was under the radar comes back to the surface.

This is specially true for those of us with autoimmune conditions. During both of my pregnancies I had not pain (I have still’s disease which is very similar to lupus ) and no other symptoms at all but they all came back some time after I had my babies . With my first one, i had an awful flare up right after I stopped breastfeeding, which was about 1 year postpartum .

Advocate for yourself!! My husband saved my life after my third c section. My nurse couldn’t get my temperature and she was so adamant to get my temp and I was thinking just chill, it’s probably your thermometer. She tried multiple thermometers and finally found a reading. Her face said it all. I was kind of out of it and felt like sleeping and I was wondering why are these nurses and doctors acting so strange? And they wouldn’t allow me to put my hands above my head. They wouldn’t leave me alone and I just wanted to sleep. Turns out I was in hypothermia and my husband told them to get me room temperature IV. The one they gave me was so cold and refrigerated and I was freezing to death on the inside. On the outside I was warm and didn’t want blankets and just wanted to sleep. Looking back, I was beginning to die. Thanks to the nurse who wouldn’t accept no reading on the thermometer and my husband who immediately knew what to do. They nurses rushed to my aid, the surgeon came back to check on me and I was all good 😊 Healthy 8 1/2 pound baby boy joins us now 😊

I myself am 5 weeks postpartum just had a babygirl and was simply not interested in working out during my pregnancy (I had a lot going on) so I didn’t even visit the channel. Anyway, I’m back now and looks like y’all are too. Welcome new addition!!! I’m so excited to see what’s next. Feeling like this is confirmation that y’all are gonna get me right once again 😉

Thank you for advocating Therapy. I'm a personal trainer and you're so right. Our mental health matters. A healing journey is so empowering mentally and emotionally. It takes so much courage and humility to get the help you need. So proud of you guys for recognizing traumatic experiences and seeking the help instead of suppressing it and moving on with life. Enjoy that beautiful baby and each other!- Ms. Pat

Thank goodness you paid attention to the L&D discharge instructions and recalled what to look out for. So disappointing to hear about the poor medical treatment you received at that initial hospital. Good for you for advocating for yourself and for finding a supportive and competent medical team. Medical gaslighting is a real issue, especially for us POC women, as well as incompetent medical staff ... which includes MDs. So glad to hear you and your family are healthy and doing well. I'm so happy for all! Continue taking care of each other.

So happy you are stressing the importance of therapy during and after pregnancy. For my last pregnancy (my third) after experiencing pretty much nearly perfect vaginal deliveries with my first 2, who were healthy 9- and 10-pounds babies, I had an emergency c-section, that was life saving for both of us, but by the grace of God, we made it through it. It was extremely traumatic for all three of us. I remember enduring the labor pains, being tough, and not wanting to accept that something was going wrong when my doctor jumped on my bed and yelled, this has to happen, your life and your child's life is in jeopardy, as they could no longer get a heartbeat. They rushed me out of the laboring room into the OR. I only had time to pray before they put me to sleep. I woke up and my baby was in the NICU. We are ok now. My youngest is 7 and a gymnast : ).

Congratulations!! I am so sorry that your post partum has been so terrifying! Continue the good care to get better every day!! I just left teaching high school history and I am a 66-year-old white woman. I enjoy doing your workout and I too am appalled at the black maternal health issues that arise that do not get the attention they need. I am so proud of you for telling your story! I am sure you will be helping thousands of women from your story! Last year I taught the new AP African-American studies class and stumbled on a video that even though it was not in the curriculum, I felt it was very important to show to my predominantly black students so they would know more about the challenges that happen to black women in America when it comes to having a baby. The video was about black women seeking black midwives who would listen to them better and how the women were advocating for themselves. Most of my high school students had no idea that the black women experienced so many dangers becoming a mom. A teacher asked me where it fit in the curriculum and I said these are young, black men and women who need to know about what’s going on and that’s how it fits in the curriculum. Please continue to get well & take your time. ❤

I was sent back into the hospital for preeclampsia. I took a oxy and my headache didn't go away. It was so scary, I was in the red zone. I could have passed in our home. Always, always listen to your body ladies. ALWAYS go to the ER first. Sometimes they will send you back to L&D. Congratulations! I love that once this season passes, I'm excited for the mom conscious excercises. Praying for you guys

Great podcast! Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful son. Love that full head of curly hair. I know he is already stealing hearts! You both did a FANTASTIC job dealing with all of this. I very much appreciate your message about advocating for yourself. Women (sadly, minorities in particular) are not always getting appropriate health care during pregnancy and it is a great reminder to speak up and insist on getting the proper care. Toya, I am so happy you are doing better. As if being new parents isn't scary enough on its own. Don't you worry -- NOBODY is leaving this channel! We love you! I am 60 and my son is 33 and we both enjoy your workouts and your positive energy. I especially appreciate the focus on core strength and balance in so many of your workouts. It is obvious that a lot of thought and research goes into everything you do. Looking forward to the new posts. Love and best wishes to all 3 of you!

My 1st comment was before watching. Soooo glad you listened to your body!! I was also readmitted to the hospital a day and a half after discharge and put on magnesium for 24 hours. It just so happened to be the day my milk came in. Needless to say I’m still trying to increase my supply. Traumatic is putting this experience lightly. It was so scary. Postpartum preeclampsia truly has no rhythm or reason. I thought my age contributed to it with me being 44 and never experiencing any health issues with my 1st pregnancy 20 years ago. Blessings to you and your family and happy healing from here on out!

Congratulations! Toya, you are so strong mama! And Juice you are really the best partner and dad! I also took my blood pressure for several days after delivery just out of an abundance of caution. It elevated way more than I anticipated and I also had no “risk factors” - so I called my OB and they shamed me for demanding an appointment and were not nice in their attempt to be “firm” with me. It was awful and left a really bad impression. Luckily it went back down on its own without intervention, but I can’t imagine what would have happened if I allowed myself to ignore my own intuition because they were so terrible. I am so glad you advocated for yourself even if it is a shame how hard you have to work to get the care you deserve.

The shakes and vomiting was non-stop when I had our 1st kid. The vomiting was during the labor portion, the shaking started afterwards. My body was on a complete roller coaster but thankfully my body settled down 😂😊. The thing is no one mentioned either of those so I definitely wasn't prepared 😂.. It was almost 22 yrs ago so glad things have gotten better for new moms😂. You guys look good parent life works for yall❤😊 Mom take your time in recovery, your body will recover completely eventually. It took months to create this beautiful baby boy, 6 weeks is the minimum to start moderate to light excercises. One of my friends developed post delivery HBP with each of her 3 deliveries. It took a while but thankfully things settled down. Continuing to pray for complete healing 🙏🏽 ✨️

You guys are so great and a perfect example of what a healthy marriage should like like. That little boy is blessed to have you and you are blessed to have each other. Take all the time you need. I appreciate the honesty about not working out just yet. When I had emergency surgery with a perforated intestine and almost died my husband was there for me. We always worked out and then realized now was the time to heal not only physically but mentally. He was my rock. I will always be his. In sickness and in health are not vows we take lightly. Life is good. Thank you for your authenticity.

It is so strange you're waiting for something for so long and then all of a sudden, he's there! I love hearing your story. I had to have a c-section with my first as he was also stuck in the ribs...I had three women jumping on my stomach trying to pry him out! Having a supportive husband means so much during it all. You have so much strength in each other and that strength is so apparent when you face challenges like this. I also was so nauseous for my first c-section. Luckily with my second, I told the team of Drs about my first experience and they were very cautious with the meds and changed the combination of medication based off of my reactions. I hope that if you decide to have a second.child you are able to do this as well because they really got all of the meds right that second time and my experience was so much more chilled! XX

Congratulations on the arrival of your healthy baby boy🙌🏾 🎉❣️ I am sorry to hear of the complications your family experienced. I am grateful you are using your platform to share your experience and encourage individuals to advocate for themselves, shed light on eclampsia, and remove the stigma associated with seeking treatment for our mental health. I know firsthand the fear and stress associated with eclampsia. I, too, had no BP issues, and all of a sudden, pre-eclampsia caused me to be rushed to the hospital and have my son delivered at 30 weeks. I completely understand the trauma of even going home thinking all was well and then returning to the hospital. Better Help seems like a great plan❤. Beautiful family you guys have. Praying for a full and speedy recovery🙏🏾.

I'm glad you brought up the shaking! I wasn't told about that at all and it was sooo weird! My legs shaked so big that they would hit each other and I couldn't control it...what an experience! I think giving birth is the one experience of your life when you feel completly in the hands of nature: things just happen beyond any "thinking process" and you just go along the best you can. Tremendous and wonderful. My sons are 30 and 27 now. Love them for ever.

Firstly congratulations on your new bundle of joy! I have 3 babies and had post partum preeclampsia with all 3. My first like you didn't know what it was or anything, nurse came on a home visit checked my blood pressure couldn't believe her eyes and sent me straight to emergency room. I didn't even have any headaches, no symptoms whatsoever. Long story short each post partum I had the same and with my 3rd and final baby it took 3/4 months of 2 different kind of BP tablets to finally bring my Bp down. I was then slowly weaned off the BP medications. Hormones does a number on us women, you will now be high risk for PP eclampsia for future pregnancies and PP.

I pray in your beautiful openness and vulnerability you be able to experience the Lord in those trauma wounds. He is uniting your wounds and trauma to His. Congratulations. Black maternal health is so important. Unfortunately we lose new moms on a wider scale. Yes advocate for your health, and that first hospital shows how often women aren’t properly cared for. Who sends a patient home with kidney issues? Just awful. Prayers for continued healing.

I am so sorry to hear what you've been going through guys, and specifically Toya. Yet, you are always that power couple and are already great parents to the beautiful Jakai. You'll all be fine. And to think you still have a treasure of saved workouts is also a testimony to your tenacity that goes far beyond the physical. Take your time putting them out though. Just take care of yourselves, each other, and the little one. We already have a lot to work with. P.S. Loving Juice's testimony about the strength of a woman. Amen to that, and Toya is definitely one of them. God bless❣️
