Thank you so much for making this video. I wish I had seen it before I ordered the squid press for sugar cane juicing only to find it really doesn't work for that purpose. I have since been blending the cleaned sections in my vitamix w additional water then squeezing out the juice with a nut milk bag or t-shirt and this works much better than the squid press.

If you soak the crushed pieces in water and boil/concentrate the water down you can extract almost 100% of the sugar in the crushed canes

When I was a kid we would eat it as a treat! Here in the southern states sugar cane is used to make cane syrup.
@pekesrepose73637 жыл бұрын
Donna Day in the Northern states we use Maple trees to produce sugars. not that it's on a shelf in 60lb bags like the cane sugar is but it's another alternative along with coconut sugar.
@donnaday17027 жыл бұрын
I do love homemade Maple syrup! My mother in-law has property in VA that a neighbor would tap the trees and processed it to make his syrup he sells every year. But the taste of the Cane syrup that my Uncle makes from Sugar Cane he grows himself brings back memories of homemade biscuits and cane syrup from my childhood. Have an awesome weekend.

Thanks for posting this video! I'm growing sugar cane, and trying to find a good press. That second press looks pretty strong, and I suspect that by removing the handle, and placing a 4 or 5 foot pipe extension over the crank arm, you could probably press a whole uncut cane with no effort whatsoever.

Gotta love you guys, lots of great info. I was giggling at seeing the skin go through. Get yourself a jungle knife or the hooked style is good too, run it down the stem (whole, not small pieces) to take off the skin, watch your hands, this is why you don't want small pieces. Then it won't be hard work at all. You can slice length-ways to make it even easier if desired. I haven't tied it but I grow sugarcane & this is how I eat it. Thanks for the great reviews on the cane presses. I'm now going to look through the comments for the model with the cogs! :) Great video guys, thanks

I have the squid press and it won't grab and advance the cane when it is peeled, the cane just spins in place and pulps is grounded, it has to have at least one side for the teeth of the wheel to grab the.

around 5:12 you mention that it is about 100 AUS$ "dyre" (not sure how to spell it). I can guess what it mean naturally, but it is the first time I have heard that word in english. Do you know if it is an Ausy word or? The funny thing is that I am from Denmark and we have the same word in danish. "Dyrere" meaning: more expensive. Ty for the vid.
@jayyoneill64047 жыл бұрын
Dearer (meaning more expensive) is a word we use in the UK alot, but countries like Ireland and Australia use similar words too us because off Britain colonising everywhere, Im not sure which country was originally so appalled by the price off something they invented a new word but hey it's very well used haha

Hey you guys are making this into toil. Just cut off the skin and cut it into quarters then slice it into pieces. Like candy, just chew it and suck out the juice. If it’s too difficult to chew then cut against the grain into smaller pieces..... I’d recon that machine press would be great for wringing out my socks.

My great grandfather had a donkey driven press. I remember people would by the cane juice by the gallon. I haven't seen that since I was a kid.

You need to add a reduction gearbox to it..
@dielaughing734 жыл бұрын
Or a motor, methinks
@MonMalthias7 жыл бұрын
The second press would work a lot better if it weren't direct drive. A nice big hand wheel attached to a small gear, driving a big gear that then drives the actual press wheels would give you all the torque you need.

@pekesrepose73637 жыл бұрын
is it the processing of sugar that makes is so bad for us? is raw sugar cane juice a healthy alternative ?
@MonMalthias7 жыл бұрын
It is less the processing and more the calories. People go out of their way to think about chemicals or whatever in their food; but the processing of sugar cane actually purifies it rather than add contaminants. White sugar is effectively pure sucrose. What is removed in the process is molasses - all the components of sugar cane that is not sucrose. Sugar cane molasses actually has decent amounts of vitamins and minerals and due to its lower sugar content has little calorific value left. The problem with sugar is that a lot of processed food, canned food, fast food, or just any food, really, has sugar added. It is truly remarkable the changes one has to make having observed people take up diabetic diets. The length of the list of things they need to avoid or minimise is long and grows longer every year. And, there is growing evidence that it is because of this abundance of sugar that the Western world appears to be afflicted by higher rates of obesity rates than that of other regions; and less so due to an abundance of fat. Whether the sugar is organic or not, brown or white, beet or cane, grape or sweetcorn derived doesn't seem to matter. The more one eats, the fatter one gets. www.bmj.com/content/346/bmj.e7492 The solution for the moment is to cook as much of your own food using fresh ingredients as possible. That way you have control over how much sugar is added. There is no helping you, of course, if your palate tends to be sweet. That being said, exercising strict(er) calorific control over one's own sugar intake - rather than whether it is processed or not (see above article) - seems to be the way forward in attaining better control of weight and body fat.
