They weren’t even supposed to be a real group but, that would all change when their very first song made waves on the dance, R&B and pop charts. After a couple of early member changes, the classic lineup of Shalamar would go on to experience several years of major success. Then, conflicts began to arise between the members and their record label as well as among the members themselves that would ruin everything.

Cornelius set up the label - but didn't "create" the group. Simon Soussan and UK DJ Ian Dewhirst came up with the recording 'Uptown Festival' and also the name. All of this was widely documented at the time in UK's Soul magazines.

The Grammy winning Jody Watley once was living in the pop Olymp with with Madonna, MJ, Janet and Prince! She is one of the most innovative, unsung, underrated and fashionable and biggest stars in the world. The first to wear high fashion in pop mainstream (Gaultier and Westwood since the late 70ies! and the iconic cone bra in 1983 in "Where The Boys Are" and again in 1987 on the cover of "Don't you want me") The first to Vogue and whaack in pop mainstream (Still A Thrill) The first to catwalk in a video (Real Love) The first to have a cover on a fashion magazines (Spur) The first to work with future film directors on her videos (David Fincher for "Most Of All") The first to mix rap and pop in pop mainstream (with Rakim) No Jody Watley = No Rihanna, Amerie, Beyonce! She needs her own video!

What I really learned from this is that Michael Jackson "borrowed" the moonwalk from Shalamar. Another lesson learned is that anything on KZbin "goes missing" if it spills the tea on any drama too 😂. BUT I'm gonna keep remembering the hits Shalamar put out.

😂😂😂😂... I wonder what's the real story how Michael started doing the moonwalk.Because there's so many different stories and so many people have claimed to have taught him.First with Jeffery saying Michael asked him to teach him. Then Michael chambers said Michael asked him along with some other break dancers to teach him. Then a couple of years ago in bobby brown's book he claims he taught him.

Shalamar is classic music stuff! And I don't blame Jody for doing her own thing and maintaining her stance of not wanting to reconcile with HH. @@MCharlerySmith I've seen it too. Guess everybody just can't simply "let go", as you say🤷🏽 yet some artists who have had long time rifts with each other in many other groups have been known to "let go" and feign camaraderie at reunion performances simply for the paper. The industry is something else!!

Shalamar fans are probably wondering how come Jody doesn’t put her differences to the side and reunite with Jeffery & Howard and go back on tour as Shalamar and make that $$$$$$ while everyone still can! Well, it ain’t gonna happen cause Jody despises Howard Hewett & that’s because Howard was very rude & disrespectful towards her, while Jeffery Daniels, her former boyfriend , didn’t do or say anything to Howard, and after a while Jeffery would sometimes take part in it also, so Jody was taking the abuse from both sides. After awhile Jody realized there was not gonna be any reprecussions against Howard cause he was the front man/ the voice of Shalamar and the records were selling cause of him, that’s when she started to distance herself from the guys and later walking away from Shalamar and never looking back. Howard doesn’t deny it, his excuses we’re; we were young and I was immature back then! And all these years, us Shalamar fans we never knew what was the real truth behind the split, both Howard & Jeffery had their own story and it was always the same excuses, money and Jody leaving cause she wanted to do something else! But like they say, there’s always 2 sides to each story and some where in the middle is the truth! You did the right thing Jody by just walking away and not looking back, that’s called dignity, good for you girl……

It's sort of bittersweet to learn that there was some "tension" going on there between these talented people. Their music really inspired me towards other R&B artists as I grew up in the 70s and 80s. This style really shaped my mind in my belief that music is really universal. And their ballads helped to shape my heart and in what I have come to believe love is, both friendship and romance. I prey that God shines on them for all of the happiness that I experienced from their beautiful voices and faces.

They were the hottest R&B/soul/dance group in the UK for a couple of years. They could do no wrong. Stepping away from the traditional R&B outfits with everyone in the same suit and embracing the New Wave aesthetic meant that more UK kids could identify with the band. Pity the egos, petty jealousy and bad management ripping them off was the final straw just at the height of their career- they had a couple of good years left in them.

That SOLAR sound from 79 to 82 was incredible, all ther acts had hits, and the production was copied from other labels, but the sound died in mid 80s. Today most of those hits are remixed millions of times. Jody's voice is the stamp of that time, like Diana Ross for Motown.

Jody has put out a video that Shalamar should stop saying they've asked her time and time again to rejoin the group. The group's co-creator Dick Griffey decided his daughter Caroline should be a part of the group from 20+ yrs ago

It`s a shame that money and egos had to get into this...Shalamar and Jodey Wately in particular are incredibly talented singers, writers and performers and I,for one, love their music.I wish they could mend their fences and just make their beautiful music once again.

Their fences were mended Shalamar is Shalamar, Jody is Jody Watley no different than Lionel Ritchie not going back to Commodores, Chaka Khan not returning to Rufus only difference is Miss Jody was not the lead singer but prevails as if she was
