Not many actors, much less Black ones, have been in 3 consecutive hit TV shows. Sherman Hemsley has. Starting with “All in The Family” (1973-75), it’s spinoff, “The Jeffersons” (1975-85), & “Amen” (1986-91), Hemsley was a constant TV presence in our homes for almost 18 straight years in 3 different decades on 3 different shows. Iconic Black TV actors such as John Amos, Redd Fox, & even Bill Cosby, have never accomplished this feat. He is VASTLY underrated!

One of my favorite episodes was the time they threw a carnival. Several carnival goers became ill from the macaroni salad the church sold at the carnival, and the church ended up getting sued. Losing the lawsuit would have bankrupted the church, but the Deacon saved the day. To refute the claim of the macaroni salad being contaminated, his plan was to eat the macaroni salad during the court proceedings, get the lawsuit dismissed, then QUICKLY go to the restroom and "expel" the macaroni salad before he could digest it and make himself sick. His plan almost worked, until the plaintiff's attorney called Rolly to the stand as a rebuttal. Rolly took SO long with his testimony, the Deacon couldn't get to the restroom in time. He was still suffering the effects of the contaminated macaroni salad 2 months later. 🤣

Amos 'n' Andy was a good, funny, and wholesome TV show. The negative narrative about it is so misguided and put a lot of good black actors and actresses out of work in the 1950s. Amos 'n' Andy was the first-ever sitcom with a Black ensemble cast in U.S. history. When the show ended due to NAACP protests, many of the actors who starred on it had hard times finding acting work because of their associations with the infamous TV show. Some died penniless. Jester Harrison (Raleigh) was a cast member of Amos 'n' Andy.
