My friend, the remarkable and ground-breaking choreographer/dancer, Carla DeSola, graduated from Juilliard’s dance program in 1960, mentored by the great Jose Limon. She went on to be one of the pioneers of modern liturgical dance. What fantastic dance education Juilliard has been offering for such a span of time! Thank you!

I wish I could dance, I wanna dance so bad. Dancing, singing, and acting are really the only things that can truly make me happy, and it’s so hard living knowing I’m too late to start. I’ve never taken jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical, gymnastics, pointe, and... yea, you get the point. But one day, I’ll learn how to dance. I have to, or I won’t have a life. You can’t succeed in musical theatre without dancing, so I’ve got to.

Gosh I wish...but I've never really done dance until this year and I only have 2 more years until uni...+ the dance and drama world is so competitive and I just don't think I'll be able to succeed and have a good financial income inthe future if I follow this career path. But having it as just a hobby is so sad and it's just not the same, I want to learn the technique and be aurrounded by dance and music and drama and performances all day every day...uff why is the world so cruel?

I started "dancing" at 3, was en pointes before 10, danced everyday of my life, stretched and strengthened my muscles, every part of my body... and got injured pretty bad. Life's not fair. I don't know how old you are, but you can always start dancing and really focus on it. If you have a decent turnout, flexibility and strength, you can dance and earn a living that way... you can teach, you can do so many things. If you really want it, you have to work hard every single day for hours.

when going into the arts, you should realize that you should never go into it for the money.
@AStageForTheKingdom6 жыл бұрын
Isabella Gill Obviously you should never go into the arts for money, BUT it is important to have a realistic perspective. You have to get food and housing somehow. If you start dancing late in life, your chances of ever having a career in ballet are slim to none. Same thing with gymnastics. You can't just start at age 16-20 and hope to be able to compete against people who have been dancing since they were 3. It takes YEARS to develop your body for ballet, and years to develop the basic technique. By the time you get to the point where you are good enough to audition for jobs or whatnot, you'll be like 25-30 and competing against people who are 15-20. That age difference is a really big deal in an art form like ballet that relies so heavily on flexibility and other bodily functions that are so much easier for younger people. There's a reason why championship female Olympic gymnasts and figure skaters are typically 15-17. JungShooking clearly has a healthy sense of perspective. He/she still has plenty of chances for a career in something like stage acting and possibly film acting, but the window of opportunity for a ballet career has pretty much closed at this point. They might still be able to make it in something ballroom, but realistically a career as a ballet dancer is not really an option at this point. That's just the sad reality of aging, of the nature of ballet. It's probably not worth it to spend tons of time and money pursuing a career in ballet at this point. That's not because he/she cares more about money than ballet, it's just that ballet flat out isn't a viable career path at this point.

I have studied dance at a very deep and meaningful level, experiencing quality education from great dance contributors and masters. However, I have always felt the need to expand and cultivate my capacity of self actualization. I'm currently preparing for Law school meanwhile working professionally as a dancer, It is time consuming and very challenging to navigate the constrains of time and commitment. However, I love what I do and I wouldn't change it for the world, don't feel like you can't follow your dreams, that's the worse you can do.

Do ballet companies regard a Julliard dance degree as equal to an apprenticeship? Or, is one respected above the other?
@JuilliardSchool6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. All of the different options you have for a dance education each have pros and cons. Many Juilliard graduates go on to wonderful careers in all types of dance. Specifically in ballet, we have several recent alums in Royal Swedish Ballet and Ballett des Saarländisches Staatstheater, among others. Here's a video that highlights some of the different training options for dancers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aV7Poa2Me9iCn7c.

So if we don't have at least three years of training we cant audition? Even if there is that 1% to be accepted?
@JuilliardSchool5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Stella - thanks so much for watching and for your questions. Our application requirements for dance include a minimum of three years of dance training. But our dance admissions team will better be able to explain how those requirements work and if there are any exceptions. You can contact them at danceadmissions@juilliard.edu or at www.juilliard.edu/admissions. We wish you all the best as you embark on your college admissions process!

@JuilliardSchool6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Dance applicants are required to have at least three years of training in ballet and modern dance. I'm not sure whether pointe is a specific requirement. You can read more on our website here: www.juilliard.edu/arm/dance/college/dance/bachelor-fine-arts. Or if you email our dance admissions staff, they will be able to guide you more specifically: danceadmissions@juilliard.edu.

@JuilliardSchool7 жыл бұрын
Juilliard Dance focuses on ballet and modern techniques -- the audition process involves both ballet and modern, but students who are admitted study many styles of dance and are encouraged in their own choreographic projects, many of which include hip hop influences. You can learn more about the dance curriculum on our website: www.juilliard.edu/dance/dance-bachelor-fine-arts.
