What can you say about Band Maid??? They are not a style or genre. Band Maid is a sound. Once again their transitions could be to many bands too good to waste for one part of a song, "why not make a whole other song based on that transition???" Because Band Maid want to make an already good song great. Vocally, instrumentality, and compositionally, it simply Band Maid doing Band Maid things. That is why they are totally unique and vitally important to rock music (to me anyway).

Black Hole is one of my least favorite songs on Unseen World. Musically, its brilliant but its not something I can just listen to for pleasure. Their progress Cd off Unseen world is simply not my style of music except Warning and No God, the other four tracks are just not to my preference regardless of how much I think they are awesome from a stand point of playing and composing skill. Manners, Chemical Reaction, After Life, Warning, No God, I will seek revenge are my top tracks of it. There is not a song that I don't like or love off the previous three full albums.

Oh, this guy gets it. Jules gets it. We don't have to coach him along like with a lot of other reactors. He's picking up all the things most people miss at first.Things like Kanami is ALWAYS doing something over in Kanami Land (aka your right ear), almost every song they write could be parsed into 2-4 other songs there's so much going on, they seldom repeat anything in a song, etc. The only thing left is for him to get to know the ladies individually while discovering their music as a whole. The best way for that is interviews. So, yes, please watch a few interviews. 😁

There is a scorebook, that may still be available, that includes "Black Hole" and all the other songs off the Unseen World CD. It also has an instrument only CD and interviews, English and Japanese, with the band members and some staff/crew. Also it should be noted that both Misa and Akane were classically trained and Kanami studied piano, concert standard, from age 3-4 until taking up guitar in High School. Just checked and the scorebook is available on eBay but not at CD Japan anymore.

Kanami, the lead guitarist, was a classically trained pianist. But she fell in love with the guitar. Misa, the bassist, and Akane Hirosi, the drummer, went to music school together. Both are multi-instrumentalists. Saiki Hirosi, the lead singer, was trained singer and dancer. Miku Kobato, the rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist, had no formal musical training, but was singer on some Japanese pop albums. She now records as a single artist under the name of Cluppo, meaning pigeon. She recently released an EP called Hatoful. You should check out that album. Miku was the founder of the band, She had worked at a cosplay based Maid Cafe and thought it would be interesting and entertaining for a group of maids to play hard rock. Boy did she succeed in putting the band together. This group is amazingly democratic in letting everyone have a chance to shine while totally servicing the song. Every reactor should understand for this group, the song comes first and understand that before picking apart the song.

What a delightful reaction! "BLACK-HOLE" is currently my favorite BAND-MAID song ("Manners" is right behind it) . The first time time I heard BLACK-HOLE on the album my brain went "WTF just happened!" I had to listen to it repeatedly to begin to sort out everything that was going on. I love the section where the vocalists are singing different things and the slow down then build up again. Such a great mass of controlled chaos. Many of the songs on their latest album "Unseen World" made my brain go "WTF just happened". I am in constant awe at how these 5 individuals got together and are creating the music they do. Seeing stuff by the band members before BAND-MAID, you would never guess that they would create this music when they got together. How Saiki (blue flower) and Miku's (red flower) voices compliment each other.

I believe she switched to drums while she was still in high school. Part of the reason for going to TSM was that she'd decided she wanted to be a professional and needed a lot more training. She also needed a set of drums and a place to practice and TSM had both. She's said she took every audition available even when the job was way over her skill level because she wanted the experience. The following is an understatement: she is very highly motivated.

This is in the mook that came with Conqueror (I think), there's a translation on reddit. She said any time she won an audition over someone older and more experienced she felt obligated to work really hard to prove she was worthy of the job. She's still that way.

'Manners' and 'Black Hole' are the bookends of the range they show on Unseen World. 'Manners' is the best straight up rock song I've heard in decades, probably this century. 'Black Hole' is awesome controlled chaos, there is so much going on that it is overwhelming, the song is so dense - like a black hole. The first time I heard 'Black Hole' I had to relisten to make sure I hadn't hallucinated the whole thing. It's great fun to watch a trained musician try to wrap their head around 'Black Hole', thanks for the reaction! What other band would think of putting La La La's into a song like 'Black Hole', let alone pull it off.

You asked about what we thought about "Black Hole" the first time we heard it. For me, I'd heard three other songs from the Unseen World album before I heard the entire album ("Warning," "Manners," and "After Life"" for the record). After "Manners" is a run of "I Still Seek Revenge," "H-G-K," and "Sayonakidori" which I thought must be the high point of the album. After a couple pretty straight-forward rock songs (for Band-Maid, to be clear) "Why Why Why" and "Chemical Reaction", the album ends with "Giovanni", "Honkai", and "Black Hole". Each one of them is more impressive than the previous. After "Black Hole" ended, I think I just stared at the wall for an hour, trying to absorb it. There really are no words.
@Kevin6059

Okay, what did I think you ask, the first time I heard this song? Well to be honest, I was still lamenting the seemingly relentless speed on their most recent album in general (Unseen World), having been listening already for 2 years to their more mid-temp hard rock awesomeness. I was going to say "more straightforward" but honestly they've always had a way to throw in little musical touches to achieve the unexpected. It took me a while to get my head wrapped around Black Hole, but I did recognize the musical awesomeness. If you're a classical musician, I guess I'd ask what your first reaction was to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. On the throw away elements that could be the basis of a whole other song well, let's just say you're one of many reactors to say this (only the good ones notice it of course). They do this all the time, because Kanami (songwriter is the lead guitarist, not rhythm guitarist in case that's what you meant) is a relentless font of musical ideas. She probably writes 3 songs in her head while waiting in line at the cake shop - on a bad day. One last thing - I'm not saying this won't stay your favorite song, but this band has a singular cumulative effect that tends to make every song your new favorite song. As you progress through their catalogue, they keep hooking you deeper and deeper and you start realizing the sheer genius of songwriting and arranging going on (and they play pretty good too 😁.)

Thanks, Jules, great comments. Band-Maid are always exploring different things, especially lately, while never losing their unique sound. The thing I find astonishing is how much material they pack into a 3-4 minute song without ever losing the thread of the compositional arc. Sometimes you need to listen to it several times, but in the end, you realize how organically it all fits together.

Your are exactly the right person to react to this song. Because of the composition some rectors just get confused by it- layers! You are in good company- their early musical education- Kanami (Lead Guitar) Classical piano, Misa (Bass) Trumpet and Akane (Drums) Trombone. The person who has come the furthest is Miku (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar/Red Rose), who could not play guitar when she formed the band, but was taught by Kanami and now also has her own music side project as Cluppo- listern to Super Star. Great reaction form you again. There will be so much for you in this band.

Great analysis. I like your speechless look after Black Hole. 1st time I heard Black Hole...I couldn't process it. I grew up on 60s-80s rock and my mind wasn't ready to go there. Took me about 10 listens before I could process it. There is another musician reactor that I like called Champ of Medium. He reacted to the original studio recording recording when it first came out. (he later reacted to the Live when it came out) but after his first listen to the song he said "I need a cigarette". But he made the same observation as you that despite the chaos and thrashiness it was still melodic and catchy. He said, "You can't have crazy for the sake of crazy. You can't have cool for the sake of cool. It still has to be a song." I really am enjoying your analysis. I know you have a lot on your list but at some point you might want to consider the 3 songs on the recent Sense EP. All 3 are available on their channel. Sense is the official A side with a MV and is an anime OP. However, most fans prefer the 2 b sides...Hibana and Corralium. Corralium is a very interesting song that fuses multiple genres.

I think what is appealing to you here is that this is an actual composition such as you would be quite familiar with in your days playing brass. Kanami writes all the parts (I'm sure with input in the rehearsal room as bands always have) so they all play off one another, sometimes contrasting, sometimes harmonizing, sometimes off in seeming worlds of their own but managing to achieve cohesion almost by happenstance. Just the rhythm guitar syncopation is so off from the rest of what's going on - I give Miku so much respect for holding that together - but that rhythm and the drum rhythm work to create a feel of off-time while it's all in 4/4. This particular composition explores the frantic chaos a spaceship might encounter in the grip of a black hole, and I think it does a brilliant job of capturing the space/time distortion, the adrenaline, the urgency, the sense of danger and impending destruction, combined somehow with the wonder of experiencing the unknown and the mystery of what may be beyond.

Your comment about the drums reminded me of an interview with Akane (the drummer) a few years back (early 2020 I think). One track (Rinne) on their latest album at the time (Conqueror) is a particularly fast song. The interviewer asked about Rinne (and Akane's double-pedal portion in the song) to which Akane said that Kanami (lead guitarist, also their main songwriter) asked at what speed Akane could kick at, and Akane replied probably around 170-180 bpm... so Kanami wrote the song at 190 bpm, lol. EDIT: Found a translated excerpt of this question, so here it is: - Track 15 Rinne (Reincarnation) is a very speedy song with your double pedal phrase exploding in the intro. I’m impressed that’s exactly you, Akane-san. Akane: Kanami asked me which tempo I can kick at and I answered 170-180 BPM, so I really didn’t expect her demo of 190 BPM (laughs). I practiced the way of using my feet very hard and tried it. It’s become the song with the most showcasing drums in the album. Without that opportunity, I probably couldn’t have mastered this tempo, and I think I’ve completed it because our band is strict with ourselves.

Black Hole is not my favourite song per se, but I still love it just because of the fact it's barely-contained chaos the whole way through. It's probably one of the most show-off-y pieces they've made, just all of them going mad for the whole song. If you want to keep getting surprised by their variety of styles, why not go for a ballad next? Daydreaming (Music Video is a must here, IMO) About Us (this song was a message to the fans, about COVID troubles and being sad that they couldn't perform/tour for their fans) Endless Story Or just take a leap of faith and check out one of the two Band-Maiko songs. Everybody has their preferences. As an artist, you want to record and communicate how you feel. Kanami went from spending the majority of her time doing what she loves, playing music with her five friends in this band, to being holed up at home and communicating only by computer conference. By accounts, she was depressed and stressed. Black Hole perfectly captures the feeling of being out-of-control and unsure of the future. Brilliance. Just my thoughts about it.

Those throwaway melodies are perhaps the most frustrating part for me. I hear one line in a song. I love it. I want a whole song around it. Band-Maid is nah, moving on, we got more ideas than we know what to do with. Then I listen to another band that doesn't deviate in their songs, and remember why Band-Maid has become my favorite band (well, one reason why).

And yes, minds have been blown by B-M. Other musicians have started to question what they know about music theory, so you're not alone. Wait until you hear songs that B-M doesn't have videos for, like "Giovanni". Though if you look hard, you can find videos for both Giovanni and the instrumental version.

Whilst I'm blubbering, one more thing. One of the many cool things about this band is the way they keep pushing themselves musically. It's obviously very intentional that they're doing more and more difficult and imaginative things. If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

And snap went the velvet trap called Band Maid music, your expressions matched mine when I blessedly tumbled onto this band and yep they're great for forgetting where you are and entering a wonderful world where these amazing musicians run their fingers through your musical soul, hmmm that was a bit mushy but that's cause it's Saturday in Australia and I'm drinking cold beer and listening to Band Maid, fark yeah, great reaction, now it's time for another beer and more Band Maid peace and love Po 👍🎼🥁🎤🎸🍻

Your enthusiasm really shines through. I went back and watched your earlier vids and the audio was a little low. Thanks for correcting that. Suggestions- Play and Wonderland ( this jazz infused song really shows off the lead singers voice) from the same concert as Domination and Freedom. From 2018 - Onset live ( an instrumental masterpiece) and Real Existence live. Since you liked Black Hole so much I also recommend MV's for Sense and Warning. Also, Corallium (audio only) is a vocal tour-de-force. You have my subscription.

G'day Jules! LOL - "This one is my favourite" - "I forgot where I was!" - it's a Maidiac community in-joke about how many times we hear these phrases repeated by the same Reactor - all in fun of course. Really love the musician's ear and take on what is different about the Maids. Manners was an instant favourite with me, the type of song to show a wide range of friends, and just groove time after time. Black Hole is a great short sharp showpiece at the end of a fantastic album, Band Maid just showing everyone what they can do with full freedom while still challenging themselves technically.

MISA (bass) is unlike most rock bassists. She is an amazing musician. She will use the whole of the fretboard. She is one of the few hard rock bassists that use the higher end of the fretboard so frequently. And she is beautiful. Oh, and the song "Blackhole" is literally about the Blackhole in space but has double meanings of course. Turn on the CC and read the lyrics.

The interviews are an absolute blast! Shows what a bunch (professional) Goofballs they are and their characters ... Yes please 🤣 (The one with Herman Li) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYSVhmyPr8Z5gZo is particularly good. With the follow up jam session kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXbKfJqlp6agl6c ... By the way, I was a trombonist in the 70's (Grade 8, an English music grade) but was drawn to the "darkside" when I first heard Black Sabbath .... Then I discovered JRock in my middling 50s and I listen to virtually nothing else apart from Nightwish (Finnish) Enyoy :) My CONN Trombone was my pride and joy ..... don't even know where it is :(

great reaction as always. I love "Manners" .. it's probably their most accessible "modern Band Maid" song, and is just a blast and fun to listen to. I loved the MV, but I prefer this version to be honest. Miku's scream and interjections are much more "interesting" here. The first time I heard "Black Hole" I was a bit confused. Sure, it's crazy fast, but it also feels super disorganized and chaotic if you don't pay attention. Having listened to it many many times now I'm at the same point you are : it's my favourite Band Maid song (so far). It's intricate and complex and every single bar is full of things to discover. it's just not a "let's put some music and cruise around in your car" track and more a "let's get some high end headphones and just listen" one :)

I'm pretty sure the first time I listened to Black Hole I was completely overwhelmed and it took me a few listens until I processed it and started to like it. It's one of my favorites now though 😅 Manners I liked immediately. So groovy! I prefer the live version over the studio one, the bass is more prevalent here. Regarding Band-Maid stuff I'd recommend Blooming, Rinne, Hibana and Corallium - the last 2 are "just" B-sides from their Sense-single (also a good song 😅) but they're really good too. If you're interested in checking out another all-female japanese Band that are vary talented, may I suggest giving Gacharic Spin a listen? MindSet and I Wish I are from their most recent stuff and are really good, or for live stuff I'd suggest Tamashii or Redline. Tamashii also has a version that's played with Toy instruments ;)

Ok my friend.....first, nice work.....most importantly, theres nothing BASIC about anything Band Maid does.....every song/video HAS to be watched or listened to multiple times just to appreciate what each member is contributing.....I mean, just imagine if Kanami (lead guitar) wrote and arranged songs in a normal formula.....the amount of songs would be tripled.....as it stands, Kanami and Miku are a very prolific song writing team.....perhaps the Lennon and McCartney of their generation.....and finally, your smile, confusion and lack of adjectives are exactly the target they're shooting for.....try About us LIVE or Daydreaming or Wonderland for yet another side of the most dynamic band in existence today.....again great job, take care, see you on your next foray down the "pigeon" hole.....oh....and yes....watch the interviews.....thanks man.......
